Man Dies After Playing Computer Games For 49 Hours

POSTED: 6:36 am CDT August 10, 2005

SEOUL, South Korea -- For some people, playing video games can be addictive, and police in South Korea said that may have cost a man his life.

Police said a 28-year-old man collapsed at an Internet cafe and died after playing the battle simulation game Starcraft non-stop for 49 hours. They said he'd barely eaten anything while he was glued to the keyboard.

Doctors think the man might have had a heart attack.

Police said he was fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games.

Those Koreans wow they put the JP to shame. Wasnt there a similar case when a Korean man died from the exact same game star craft? Jesus... christ

SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play online games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry

Another bullet for H. Clinton to load into her gun. Hope she drowns in a bucket.....

Starcraft is big bizzz to them there koreans..

How do those Blizzard guys sleep at night eh? Still, by the sounds of things these people were no loss, if you're spending 50 hours at a time playing games your life can't be worth much.

Well to me life is very important...even if you do take video games to extreme like this poor soul did. :( I just wonder how some people can totally in a way try to make their RL just like sub/job in a game.
What does it take for someone to go to these kind of extremes. I would love to hear everyone's ideas on this issue.
Can a game be so important that you forget or just don't care about who you are as a person or your health?

Koreans dont play when it comes to Starcraft. Here in the states we got Xbox 360 Ps3 coming soon etc. Over there they still on that 1994 Starcraft lol. 2 yrs ago i got to play the this 14 yr old kid that holds the world title in Starcraft. Needless to say i got owned.

There's much, much worse ways to die. The headline on this story might make you laugh, but read the first couple paragraphs to find out the cause of death, and you'll cringe:

And I always figured autoerotic asphyxiation would be an embarrassing way to go. There's always some idiot out there bound to do something worse.

What the hell does she have to do with this?

You don't read the news much eh?

Does anyone else feel that this guy was a complete retard? If he was playing in an internet cafe...shouldn't the people that worked there have done something? I haven't seen to many 24 hour internet cafes around here but i could just be stupid.
