Another kid dies at Disney

...and yet, the rickety old roller coaster here at Playland Vancouver, which I believe is the oldest rc still on it's original wooden stuctural supports, hasn't claimed a single life (or at least, not that I know of).

/waits for some pointless Action Group to pop up, saying all roller coasters in the world are detrimental to our future and should thusly be banned / destroyed

The ride he died from was totally awsome. I went on that one a couple years ago. It's an Aerosmith based ride. You need to take the limo to get to the show on time so it drives hella fast. At least thats what the story is from your time spent in line.

"Another" is a rather inappropriate word, considering the rare deaths that do happen in any Disney Amusement park are due to the idiots that ride the coasters. The boy probably had a weak heart.

Yeah, 1/10000000 ain't bad. And that one is usually at fault.

The another was referring to the large child that died on Mission Space not too long ago.

Considering the volume of visitors Disney gets, they're doing a spectacular job.

Quoting for emphasis. Notice all the people died because of physical conditions? How is this a Disney problem? Every roller coaster I have ever seen has big warning signs (in english, spanish and pictures for people who can't read). I expected it to fly off the tracks or something. This was parental negligence or an unknown condition, either way not Disney's problem.

I agree completely, it's not Disney's fault at all. They're still going to get shit for it just like they did with that huge kid with the heart condition that died on Missoin Space.

Space Mountain...?
No Mission Space is a ride in Epcot that is supposed to simulate taking off in a real spaceship and landing on Mars.

And anyway the kid was 4 and had a weak heart, shouldn't have been on that ride in the first place.

Autopsy: Boy at Disney Had Heart Defect
By TRAVIS REED, Associated Press Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 12-year-old boy who died after riding a Walt Disney World roller coaster had a congenital heart defect, an autopsy found Friday, and an inspection of the ride found no mechanical problems.

The autopsy of Michael Russell, the son of an Iraq war veteran, was done one day after he stopped breathing while riding Disney-MGM's Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. The cause of death was left pending until more tests are conducted, ruled Dr. Sara H. Irrgang, an Orange County associate medical examiner.

"No evidence of injury was found, but congenital heart abnormalities were detected, which will be further evaluated," the office said in a statement.

Disney World reopened the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster on Friday after theme park inspectors found no mechanical problems. A state inspector monitored the examination.

"Walt Disney World engineers and ride system experts completed a thorough inspection of the attraction overnight and found it to be operating properly," the company said in a statement.

The boy was limp when the ride ended. His father, Byron Russell, immediately attempted CPR but the boy died at a hospital.

Russell told authorities his son had no previous health problems, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Byron Russell is a part of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Fort Campbell, Ky., and served in Iraq, the military has said.

A medical study released last year gave support to the notion that heart problems can be triggered or aggravated by roller coasters.

Researchers at the University Hospital of Mannheim in Germany put 55 healthy people on roller coasters and monitored their heart rates during the two-minute experience. Average heart rates rose from 89 beats per minute before the ride to 155 just afterward.

These rates are high enough to trigger rhythm problems, and two participants experienced different types of them. The study's authors recommended that people with heart disease not ride coasters.

Disney and other large amusement parks are exempt from state and federal oversight, but the parks in Florida agreed in 2001 to provide quarterly accident reports and notify the state of serious incidents. Disney has reported nine deaths since then; Universal Orlando has reported two and Sea World and Bush Gardens none.

The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster debuted in 1999 and has had 36.6 million riders, according to Disney. No previous fatalities have been reported on the ride.

Pretty much. Heart failure. Nothing could be done, because you can't control it's trigger if you don't know you are at risk of having it. No one's fault.

Boy, 6, plunges to death from top of Ferris wheel.
STOCKTON, California (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy plunged 90 feet to his death from the top of a Ferris wheel while his mother watched from below at the San Joaquin County Fair, authorities said.

Ruben Castillo was riding alone in his gondola, which was near the top of the 100-foot Giant Wheel when he fell Sunday afternoon, authorities said.He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

California Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials, who are investigating the incident, were told that the boy tried to climb out of his seat, said spokesman Dean Fryer. It was not immediately clear why he climbed out or whether he was properly secured in the seat, Fryer said. (Watch Ruben's mom explain why he was alone -- 1:40)

The fair's rides have no age restrictions, only a height requirement, which Ruben met for the Giant Wheel, said Forrest White, the fair's executive director.

The ride was operated by Fairfield-based Butler Amusements Inc. and had a valid permit, which was due for its annual renewal next month, Fryer said.

"We are extremely sorry this tragic accident occurred," said Butler Amusements spokeswoman Mary Castel. The Giant Wheel will remain closed until the investigation is complete.

This happened only a week ago and of course since it didnt happen at a huge well known resort like Disney it got almost no press. Can you imagine the mothers horror as she watched her child fall to his death... That will haunt her for the rest of her life. My heart goes out to her and also to the family of the boy who died at Disneyworld.

*edited to add that nether the Disney accident nor this accident were any fault of the establishments. In this case it was merely a child who for whatever reason did something so very foolish.

Jesus christ. My heart goes out to her too.

However, just like in Disney World, this was most likely an uncontrolled factor. The kid did it on his own free will, and quite frankly. Anyone can fit through the safety bars on a Ferris Wheel.

Sometimes I feel like my heart is beating weird, like, off-rhythm. Shit like this makes me afraid to go on a roller-coaster, I never have before. I may never.

Thats normal with some people. Some people have a unsteady heart beat. If you feel like you have to take breaks while running or other activities, go have it checked. If you don't experience them, then doctors don't really do anything since there's nothing thats effecting your daily life.

I talked about this with my dad since hes a doctor, because my dog has an unsteady beat and I was worried about her after loosing 2 dogs :(

Though what I said may not be your case, you should have it checked to be sure.

What's a six-year-old doing riding alone on one of the gondolas anyway?
