Well just for background, I wrote this several years ago when I was playing this text game called Realms of Kaos. It was fairly well recieved when I posted it on their messageboard there and while I printed up a hard copy their MB was wiped and my laptop which I had it on was until recently unusable. I'm just gonna print out the first chapter, but there's 21 of them, which I'll post the rest if there's any interest(not sure people will connect because this is based on RoK not FF). As a note I've heard a lot that this is similar to .hack which I have seen and I agree it is fairly similar, but my actual inspiration was this old Disney movie Tron which as a kid I really loved, and this very good old sci fi movie called Blade-Runner with Harrison Ford.
Well anyway, since I've given proper credit to where some of my ideas came from...
Chapter 1: Newby: Login-->
Awaken child of an Enigma. This is the beginning of your story. This is the ending of mine. There is a life full of purpose for you.
Calvin sat down in his hard wooden chair. He coughed softly into his hand before turning towards his computer monitor. He looked down at his bedroom floor in disgust. His clothes were strewn about, the clean and dirty all mixed in together. It was apparent to him that he had to clean it but he did not seem to be able to force himself to set aside any time for it.
Calvin wondered why he didn't just clean his room up. It wasn't like he was particularly busy. He got out of his school at 2 and didn't have a job. He spent most of his time pent up in his room anyway, with a daze fixed upon his computer screen.
He stared blankly for a moment. He had a lot of things he could do. He had homework to do if he wanted to actually pass his high school classes. He had a room to clean. He had work to go out and find.
'What else do I have to do?' he thought.
Go out and meet people? No point trying that. He didn't have to slightest clue how to do it anyway.
Calvin averted his eyes from his floor and looked back at his monitor. The screensaver had come on and left during his time at school, and now all that was left was a black screen and a yellow light emanating from his monitor's terminal. Circling the mouse around Calvin quickly resurrected the computer. A Microsoft word document was open, with five words on it.
"Get Me Out Of Here."
Calvin closed the program and was once again staring at his wallpaper. It was a collection of shapes. Calvin had no idea why he chose it. He knew it would be a nice way to pass the time finding a better one. His desktop icons were messy too, he noticed. Cleaning that up was one chore he did not mind. With a few clicks he set his desktop for auto-arrange.
Opening up his internet explorer, Calvin's favorite search engine came into view. Do I search for another wallpaper now? Do I try to find some internet game to play?
Calvin wanted amusement. He needed stimulus. Everything was too mundane for him.
Calvin searched for internet games. He played a side-scroller for twenty minutes or so where he was a monkey shooting exploding bananas at various monsters. It bored him quickly.
Simple games are no challenge...
Calvin played against a chess program created by some college he'd heard of once but never cared about. He beat that too.
Calvin searched for more games to play. It was nearly 3:30 and he felt like doing something interesting on the internet today.
Before long he had happened upon a website with the URL: www.realmsofkaos.com
"A text game?" he thought.
He was fond of role playing games. He had quite a collection of Playstation rpgs. It was something new, he supposed.
So he downloaded and installed the client.
Create a Character... ok.
Who am I?
Calvin thought for a moment before looking around his room for inspiration. His eyes fell across a book he enjoyed named "Ender's Game". Alright, he thought to himself. I'll be Ender.
He selected a race for himself. He would be human. Calvin saw that the statistics were based on a roller.
Great, he thought to himself sarcastically. I can surely prove my supreme clicking and having no life skills here.
In a minute or so he had determined the maximum stat was 20. Not knowing which stats he would need but realizing that there was no reason that he could not get a 20 in every stat, Calvin began to click away. But Calvin's patience quickly waned, and he discovered just how improbable a 20 in every stat was. So he took a nice roll that ranged from 18 to 20 in everything. He selected sorcerer as his race, deciding that the character he was creating would be a learning character anyway and he wanted to get a feel for the game before he put any more time into it.
And so Ender was born. He clicked on some random elemental alignment and before long he was inside the game.
He was inside of a tavern of some sort. There were about 10 other players here, appearing to be idling chit-chatting.
Someone named IceJavolin walked in. Someone named Hotgurl walked out.
What am I doing here?
Calvin was already bored. No one said hi to him. There was some tutorial that he was sure wasn't worth his time.
So he asked the first question that came to his mind.
"How do I move?"
"Type 'east' or 'e' for short," said IceJavolin.
And with that, he was out.
Something was wrong though.
Calvin felt weak. He grabbed his head as a headache overtook him.
As leaned forward hunched over with his head in his hands, he saw someone walking it. He only saw the avatar before something happened; something that he would never fully understand.
Calvin felt himself being drawn towards him monitor. With a loud crash he threw his head into the screen. A strange yellow light surrounded him. He felt an intense pain surge through his body. It hurt too much to cry out. And with that Calvin was dead, and Ender awoke on the streets of Terra with a rather terrible headache.
Well anyway, since I've given proper credit to where some of my ideas came from...
