I haven't seen this on any bulletin board system besides futaba/wakaba types, but I'm wondering. Is there any sort of function possible for these boards that would give the option not to bump a thread after posting? In the case of wakaba, putting "sage" in a post's e-mail field will not bump a thread.

I think the benefits are pretty obvious (people saying "come on guys, let this thread die" wouldn't bump it, etc), it's more a question of... does this even exist?

How would this be different from a mod lock?

My guess is that the OP can do this as well lock their own threads it would be useful since some really goood threads go to crap and keep going and going but a mod can't stop it since it doesn't break the rules but is still annoying. The OP with this ability would be able to stop the thread.

Thats my thought of why/how

The point of it would be to be able to post to a thread without bumping it to the top. For instance, say you come across a thread that interests you, and you feel like contributing to it, but it is over a year old. Normally, by posting to the thread it would bump it and annoy everyone else (thread necro).

With a function such as this, you could add your thoughts to an old thread without bumping it to the top, so only those truely interested in said thread would check it and see your response.

It is also a useful function, like Mai said, in the event you see an ongoing thread that is being crapped on. You want to voice your opinion in having it stopped, but don't want to bump the thread in fear of restarting idiotic discussion. With a function like this, that would be possible.

There are other uses as well, which I hope are sort of obvious at this point.

vbulletin (our forum software) has a few hacks like this and I could probably tweak it to our needs but is it really worth it?

I try to keep the hacks down since they slow the performance of the board and more importantly make it a pain in the ass to upgrade.
