I know that I'll probably get a lot of criticism for this, but has anyone watched cycle ten of this mess? The plus-sized model Whitney won the entire competition, which kind of has me confused.
Now look, I'm all down with the healthy body image jazz, but this show is really a joke. I mean it's so disconnected from the industry and terribly idealistic. I was under the impression that the entire premise of it was to find a model who could would be expceptional at what she does - to find a "top model" - but with plus-sized girls you're really looking at more of a niche market. I can tell you right now, that the industry wont change at the hands of a ANTM winner lol. She may book a few minor gigs, Victoria's Secret if she's really lucky as those girls are generally more full-figured - but runway? Editorial? I mean Tyra Banks can close her eyes all she wants and tell herself there's a place for a curvy woman in the modelling world - but that won't get her winner work.
I've done a bit of modelling, and I know that when those girls (and boys) rock up to a booking there is basically one size to pick from (maybe two). You get measured, prodded, squeezed and sutured into things. If you don't fit the shoes, you cram those things in, clench your teeth and hope for the best honey. If you don't fit the garment however, you are SOL and no one will book you.
I'm not saying that the current trend in coke chic is healthy. But then again I never saw models as accurate reflections of societal norms, merely as mediums for artists/photographers/designers. I once had a conversation with one of my friend's mothers about this - and she basically said that thin models should be done away with as they promote eating disorders. I took the postion that it is much easier to just talk to your children and imbue them with a realistic perspective of body-image, than it is to change the world in order to avoid an exercise in parenting.
Anytranny, I think that for a show which attempts to find someone suited for the industry, it seems out of touch - being more concerned with political positioning (or Tyra's consuming vanity and ego) than the reality of the situation.
Thoughts?
