Anyone else have a Network Admin decide to go port blocking~

At your work place or your ISP?

It would be unusual for them to block that port range, since that would stop a large number of applications from working. The Port Range is 51000 and up. It would stop any game that is uses DirectPlay or most of your online games.

I know one of our local schools here switched to a Novell Network that required you sign on to a Novell server before you could get Internet Access, thus blocking any Playstations from working, but you could use Internet Connection Sharing to get around that.

Have you spoke with them to find out the reason why they choose to do this?

I was actually doing a bit of reasearch into tunneling programs. Afterwards I realized that my networking skills from my basic networking class wouldn't make the cut unless I can find a program that makes it relivly easy.

From what I understand tunneling is when you encode the packet on another port, send to a computer outside the firewall, and have that computer send the packet for you. Kinda like a proxy.

Would you mind telling me what program you used to do this?

Since I always have a bunch of SSH sessions up, I just use that for tunneling (I use Putty, but I'm sure SecureCRT and others let you do it too).

Novell

My college uses Novell.
Can you go into detail on how I can get around it on my Playstation?

Well I managed to get FFXI to work again by giving the network admin a dump of the packets playonline tried to send. Guess he figured the rest out.

No luck what so ever trying to set up a tunnel though. I'm sure I could get it to work for other major services, but I just couldn't figure it out for FFXI.

Man... that gave me a headache... Time to go chasing NPCs around with candy!

T_T Firewalls suck!
Daddy needs his medicine!

Basic concept is you setup Internet Connect Sharing or Network Bridge on your PC. Your Playstation will connect to your Computer via a Second Network Card and a Cross Connect Cable. Once you logon to the Novell server with your computer, ICS will route the playstation stuff out to the Internet.

To give you more detail instructions, I need to know which version of Windows your computer is running.

XP professional.... on a labtop >_<

It also has built in wireless access along with the ethernet port.

Also, if my college has a block on P2P, will it block this?
