I got the following email today from netflix, and I am seeing on the web that a lot of others are upset too:

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.

We realize you have many choices for home entertainment, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-357-1516.

Seriously? They've already increased rates once this year, but this is kind of a huge jump! It's basically an instant 60% increase! I've always liked Netflix and thought it was a great service, but this is the type of big company crap Ele keeps whinning about. Difference being that I'm going to do something about it: cancel

Yeah, well... that's typical. Too bad in the next couple years (if that) there won't be a video store to choose from if you don't want to deal with the gouging that will continue to happen with each demand.

My parents are cutting back to streaming only, since that's why they got netflix in the first place. They plan on using redbox again for renting movies they can't stream.

i switched to streaming only way back when they first offered it...I don't ever rent dvds when i have such a huge streaming collection, and i upgraded to blu ray some time ago so it was just smarter to do.

Hmm I wasn't even aware I could do the DVD thing because I got Netflix on my PS3. I figured it was just Streaming Only if you did that, which is all that I am using anyway.

I would think there would be some kind of deal for getting both, but seems Netflix doesn't work that way.

Not like I can complain anyway. I rent all my movies from the utorrent.

Herpaderp you assume I do buy the shit from businesses that piss me off.

You also assume that everything is as easy just "stop buying" as the olden days to make an impact. Pro-tip: Learn about the economy and how interconnected many corporations are. Also, I choose to do more than just not buy their product. I choose to educate others and help them see why they shouldn't buy their product as well.

God some people are fucking dumb. Don't assume that I complain about it and then just keep buying their products, but in some areas don't assume like you really have a choice either. Seriously. Go try and live in the US today without being able to drive, especially in areas where there is little to no public transportation. I do use public transportation myself, but even then that still is "supporting" some areas because it requires the use of gas or whatnot. Guess I can't do anything but walk anywhere.. oh wait.. that's not feasible AT ALL. God damn people are stupid. When something becomes unfeasible (like let's say they let water and such have free reign, you know they'd charge an assload) then the government has to step in and make it so.

You bring me up like this and make a stupid assumption, I'm gonna respond, just saying :)

I like how they tried to pass it off as anything other than a blatant price hike. I'll be making the jump to streaming only, since I wasn't really using the DVD half of my plan much anyway.
