My PC has just stopped allowing all internet connections except through Internet Explorer, it is not the Firewall blocking it and nor the router as my other PC works fine. Anyone know what may be wrong as i am getting annoyed not being able to play FFXI & other online games.

Possibly a corrupted file?

Just for clarification, you can only access an internet source through Internet Explorer? Like you still have the internet and it works, but only inside of IE?

Sorry was just a little unclear, but my brain is workin through possibilities right now.

Who is your service provider and what type (cable, dsl, dial-up) is it?

I know what's wrong.

To make it simple.

Backup everything and do a restore.

If you want details, pm me.

iaredrew: yes, i can only access the internet source through Internet Explorer & yes it still works and i have the internet, but only inside of IE.

Princemerc: i tried a system restore but unfortunatly that didnt fix it either.

I have 2 PCs connected to the roter, the "other" PC can access the internet fine so i know it is not a problem with the service provider or the router, and my PC only allowes me to access the internet through Internet explorer, nothing else.

Hmmm.. the problem sounds familiar but it's been years since I've seen it last.
I think it did have something to do with the firewall used.
Try to turn off the firewall completely for a few minutes and see if everything starts working.
Then maybe deinstall and reinstall it.

The best advise I can give you however, back up your important stuff and reinstall your entire computer from scratch.
It's still the best remedy for problems as even if the above solves it, there's a big chance you'll run into it again later on.

Not too much information there. I'm guessing you only use Internet Explorer when not playing games online.

Check your Modems settings, it's possible it could have been changed to "Router Mode". If you want to play games online it has to be set to "Bridge mode", so if it's not set to Bridge Mode, then online games will not work.

Not a restore, complete backup, erase and reinstall. That will work regardless of what the problem is.

(I'm still keeping in mind you've made no changes to other hardware).

A full system reformat sounds way too intense for something like this. Still need to know what type of internet and the provider. Also is it vista or xp?

Well, we can scratch the provider and connection as the internet works fine on 2 other computers as Aeriss sais.
My thought is the problem resides somewhere inside the system software or firewall itself.

You can try singling out the problem, however it's no guarantee that it will actually fix the problem, there's even a chance the problem becomes worse or other problems start showing up.
Next to that, trying to determine the problem can take days.
Reformating your system might sound drastic, but if you have a good back up it will most likely take no more then a day including all updates for windows and ffxi.

I'm not so much trying to diagnose the ISP or the connection as I'm trying to diagnose the setting withing IE and the computer. IE has it's own internet settings which may or may not be reflected onto the entire system. So on the extreme side, say they're using dial-up and only IE is dialing into the connection but the system itself does not have the info needed to dail in.

Just trying to troubleshoot to save the user time, if it's something simple that's being overlooked I wouldn't want the user reformatting. With reformatting comes full reinstalling, replacing files, reupdating (including the dreaded ffxi forever long update), etc.

Found the problem, my ISP blocked access to POL because it was using too much bandwidth >.> And i was suppost to be on unlimited Bandwidth, but they changed to to 10Gb/Month w/o asking me >.> so i changed ISP & all sorted.

Hooray, I knew it would come down to that lol. Congrats on fixing it though!
