I'm trying to remember a couple books I read in school during the 4th grade, about 18 years ago...
First book: A bunch of children get trapped, I think in a house, that somehow sunk into the ground or something. I'm not super clear on that, but I do remember that they were in complete darkness, no light. One of the kids had a lighter so they were able to see in brief spark flashes. I think there was some bananas, and I think a sack of flour and some source of milk (possibly a goat?) that they used to survive for a while. At the end someone made some kind of crude gunpowder and exploded it with a hammer to make enough noise to attract rescue.
Second book: I think this book was about a bunch of jewish children hiding during the holocaust, but I can't remember much detail. About the only thing I can remember is that at one point one of the boys gets a piece of chocolate and like takes his little girlfriend out into the woods to share it; but then later they all get a bag of oranges and think fruit is even better than chocolate. I'm kind of remembering nuns? I think maybe there were other, non-jewish children too, it's all sort of vague in my memory.
Anyway if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about and could provide the titles I'd be much obliged. As I said I think I read them in school, so they shouldn't be too obscure...
Thanks!
