damnit to hell these people need to die -.-
Ok so I created one of those free accounts earlier this year so I could have internet since I didnt have cable at the time and I wasnt going to go 4-5 months without internet access.
Now fast forward to September when I get my first bill from them, first thing I do is call them to cancel my account as thats the only way to get it shut off besides writing them. The lady I spoke to on the phone said that my account would be open for another month but I wouldnt be billed for it, but only after trying to sell me AOL services every which way, asking all these questions of why im quiting, why I signed up, whos my current cable provider and what phone services I was using at the time.
Now today I get my credit card bill in the mail and see a $30 charge going to none other then AOL, so I search their site trying to find a number to call to figure out what the fuck was going on. But for some mysterious reason the help page that had the number listed on it had dissapeared, the link redirected me to the front page of the help area. So I went and did what every other webjunkie would do and Google it, cause everything can be found with google ^^ So after finally finding the number I needed I proceeded to call and ask why I was being billed for a service I no longer needed. Well apparently the dipshit I talked to when I canceled my account the first time failed to tell me that that extra month my account was open for was already billed to my card, and somehow didnt show up till my bill today.
Guess what im trying to say is that AOL is a pathetic, fucking dumbass, pussy, piece of shit when it comes to account management and keeping their customers happy, or ex-customers happy in my case. So dont use them, they arnt worth the hell it takes to cancel them even if its free internets for a few months.

theyre called Retention Agents, and they get paid to keep you using AoL. If that means decieving you, or failing to process your cancel request or somesuch... they will. Enjoy.

Hold on. People still use AOL?

Ppl can use AoL on a Tcp/IP stack off their highspeed service, you wouldnt know it. Not that they should... but always surprises me the lengths people will go to fail at the intarweb.

You'd be surprized how quickly people are suckered into AOL. Especially if they know nothing about computers as internet, cause it's the most in-your-face product I can think of. ><

God.... AOL is the Devil!!!! I avoid them like the plague!I advise everyone else to do the same!

duh! because AoL is the Devil.!!

Had the same problem 2 years ago... grr frustrated the hell out of me..

I already canceled the damn account twice and they still kept charging me... apparently my sister activated another one > > and so did my brother.. so I got two more Numbers ... called got them cancelled and I still.. got charged.. sooooo what I did was kept calling til they got their shit straight. lol and damn I was yelling and telling them how I would spread the word to everybody I know. Finally it was gone.... and I hate anything that has to do with aol even that goddamn piece of shit AIM.. HATE THE BITCH lol..

OH man.. and when those cds come in the mail.. > > hohoho.. grab a bat. and crackkk. lol

Wow I feel stupid, I can't tell if thats sarcasim or not =/ Is it? If not, why can't AOL users use the sight?
It's sarcasm, I think.
One of the problem message board admins face is that AOL is using proxy servers to let their users connect to the real Internet. So if I were to ban a user based on his or her IP, then I would effectivly ban all users who use that particular proxy server. Rather than fiddling with this issue some admins choose to just ban all of AOL and thus not worry about the problem.

AOL also tends to recognize forum email (such as your activation email when you sign up) as spam, and not give the recipient any way to retrieve the email at all, instead sending it back to the sender saying that it was denied access to the AOL mail system. Again, some admins just ban AOL email addresses at sign up to avoid this problem.

If I could get away with it I would ban AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail email accounts at sign-up. The amount of time required to follow-up on things that are caused by QCDN emails getting sorted into the spam-mail folders of those services is close to not being worth the effort.

Awww, but I rather like AOL for their free cupholders they ship out every few months. I still have this one here, it came in a cool metal case. I use it for holding pizza. ^_^-b

But on topic... AOL's founders made a forbidden pact with Lucifar, exchanging their souls for absolute marketing power. As well as their customers, take a look at the license agreement, it's in there somewhere, really fine print.

I have an AOL account that I occassionally use as a back up for emergencies. Durring the very short overlapping period between me getting FFXI and having dial-up I never once had a DC, and the game ran perfectly smooth with no lag, even in Jeuno. To this day, when my Cable modem craps out on me, I can still log onto my trusty AOL account and it will always work.

First of all AoL is the biggest, buggiest, ugliest pie of shit I've ever seen. I've seen it fuck up so many computers it's insane... I've seen it format a computer once (no lie)...

Second AoL is still the #1 internet w/e in the US which is very understandable once you work in a computer shop for... a day or more. I always loved the feeling of uninstalling AoL off people's computers.

Third, hotmail isn't that bad.. I use hotmail for everything except my most important stuff (bank account, etc). Guess that's it for now..

i used to do tech support for aol. its rediculous what the retention dept does to make a buck. every time someone gets suckered into using that free month that they give you that you supposedly "wont get billed for" that makes that person money. so, even if they do say that your acct will be cancelled, there is a good chance that the person you talked to will be shiesty enough and give you that free month to make a commision.
depending on the situation, you may have to tell your bank to stop payment to them

the one thing i do like is picking up the free discs that come in the good plastic cases and using them for my plethera of dvds and other cds

back when i had AOL, FF ran pretty smooth, i don't think my cable connection likes this game >.>

your crazy for paying in the first place.
if you only needed 4 months of service you could of easily done this... and it work's i've done it
create an account, you get a 2 month free trial
2 months later - call to cancel usually they will ask you why say some lame excuess like it was just to confusing i only used Internet Explorer. usually they will bs talk to you about all "Cool" features aol offers and ask you if you'd like an extension on your free trial. you accept
2 months later - call to cancel, explain to them that its just not working for you and you don't wish to use it anymore and to just shut it off. DON'T FALL FOR THERE HOAX OF EXTENDING UNLESS YOU NEED IT AGAIN!! I REPEAT UNLESS YOU NEED EXENSION DONT AGREE
If you still need it after your 4 month free trial, and they don't offer an extension. CANCEL anyways, grab your credit card and another free 2 month disc and resign up with a new user name BAMN 2 more months WOW and then.... extension after those 2 months again lmao. i had AOL free for 2 yrs doing this, screw them and there $24 a month for the same shit netzero offers free :p
