Well I beat this BC tonight with some friends, and now tomorrow i have to choose an earring. Oh boy :(

I have BLM to 75, and PLD going to be up there soon. I plan on using both jobs for end-game. I need to chose between Ethereal Earring and Static Earring.

So I'd like to have opinions from people who have the earrings already. Especially from BLMs that have tried the Static Earring. How big is the bonus dmg on MBs?

Thanks for answering :)

+5conserve mp, +20 mp, +1mph. There is nothing else that compares to that for mages. There are lots of good alternatives for melee earrings, but that is just unbeatable for mage earring.

Magnetic is great but for a BLM static would seem better :P since they are teh damage machinezorz (I want magnetic bad x.x need a group to do it though)

I know you asked for "professional" opinions, but what do the earrings do for those of us who don't know? I'm 54 but I still have a brain between my ears, I can help.

There's been a couple threads so far about the earings, so he was probably thinking everyone remembered them from that; but here you go:

Magnettic Earing
Static Earing
Hollow Earing
Ethereal Earing

I chose static for my blm since it turns out to be something like +7 MAB on bursts... which is nicer than +2 int from abyssal, or any other earring out there for that matter, (even loquacious with 30mp and +faster cast) I'll macro it on the burst spell of choice. for paladin though ethereal earring is beyond godly, and even for drg/whm evidently. if youre running both jobs, you can get by with something else for BLM (especially considering nerf coming up) and just get the ZOMG UBEREST EARRING FOR PLD EVER.

I'm not quite sure if I want Etheral or Magnetic XD I'm leaning more towards magnetic but.. anyone wanna do the fight x.x

I think those two earrings are the best, Ethereal and Magnetic, so basically which ever job you feel is more fun~

Well magnetic is out of question, it's basically an earring for a job who's main concern is MP, and it's not the case for BLM. I'm kinda hoping, and am probably right by saying any BLM mostly doing end-game stuff would chose Static over Magnetic. That is not the problem.

What I'm questionning myself on is : Which will be more usefull for the respective job? Static Earring for BLM or Ethereal Earring for PLD. And I'm talking about end-game mostly. Gods and Jailers.

If any PLD who got their earring would comment on it, i'd like that too :)

And yeah sorry if I didn't bother explaining what the earrings were and everything, I'm mostly adressing to people who have used them.

Unfortunately, I'm neither of the jobs (BLM or PLD), so I can't help from 'personal experience', however, it really depends which job you plan on leveling more and whichever seems more unique to you.

Do you have big future plans for your Paladin? Do you worry about Square-Enix possibly hurting BLM in the future (though I'd think they would learn by now)? These questions, and others, are key to choosing the correct earring.

I would say Ethereal, because it's useful for quite a few jobs (Not saying Static isn't, but Ethereal seems to serve more purposes), and I'm sure Static is somewhat 'replaceable', though the choices are pretty rare ones (such as Novia/o (whichever is the M.A.B one), but again, look into this. Ethereal seems like nothing can replace it at this point, but it's your choice, and no matter what it'll be a good choice. Just follow which you feel is best for you.

Actually, its nowhere near as good as it seem to be. BLMes who chose that earring regrets it. I don't know the exact numbers for how much MP it saves, but you'd be better of using SMN sub for Auto Refresh as you'd have to spend over 2k MP over the course of 3 min (was something like that... don't remember exactly).

Either way, I chose Static Earring, and its quite good. Adds around 5-10% randomly to MB's, not to mention that +2 MND also helps with my WHM's Cure V, and the +2 Magic Defence Bonus that helps on quite a lot of events (like Wyrms, Fafnir etc.).

A PLD in my LS chose the ethereal earring, and he really noticed a difference during gods, and especially the three CoP Wyrms. It might not seem like a lot, but its quite noticable when you use it. Said it was almost like an extra refresh.

Either way, it all comes down to which job you love the most, and which one you will probably use the most.

From the statistics I've seen, conserve mp saves 8-10% mp on average (it usually saves 30%-50%, but it doesn't kick in every time, thus lower overall). Thus to equal smn auto refresh alone, you only have to spend 200-250 to equal autorefresh every min. I don't know how much +5 conserve mp increases the proc rate, but its boosting an already incredible ability. That combined with +1mph will net you more nukes over all. Additionally static only helps with mbs...in many end game scenarious blms aren't mbing, they are just free nuking. This is also true in blm cannons (while they last) and most end game merit parties (the only place you can use this since its lvl 72).

I did forget about the pld earrings mp production. That would definitly be the choice to make if you plan to ever use pld much and never focus on other mage jobs.

Yes, from the normal conserve MP trait. But I'm talking the +5 bonus from the earring :P That one is nowhere near as powerfull as the normal job trait.

And in most end-game scenarios, the main damage from BLMes come from MB's, and not from free nuking. Unless you take 12 BLMes and nuke everything to death, in which case the earring won't help you much anyway.

And in manaburn exp parties the earring won't help you much either unless all the BLMes have it. Mainly because:

1) you rarely actually run out of MP.
2) if you do, you are still limited to how much MP the other BLMes have. You can sit there with 700 MP left while the others have 150 left, which won't make exp flow any faster.

Then why were you comparing it to autorefresh? Neither earring has that.

How many mb's does it take with the other earring to equal 3mins of autorefresh? Considering you are lucky to get more than one mb a min, the extra dmg from the earring in 3 mbs isn't likely to exceed 60 mp spent in another nuke from the mp generated by autorefresh either. So both fail to exceed the value you are comparing them to.
And in most end-game scenarios, the main damage from BLMes come from MB's, and not from free nuking. Unless you take 12 BLMes and nuke everything to death, in which case the earring won't help you much anyway.
In most end game scenarios I see, its blms free nuking with the mb rarely seen. Dynamsis is nothing but free nuking. The sc's on Kirin are few and scattered and mbs make up the minority of blm's mp use by far. The other gods are either too easy to require it or the melees become to disorganized after the first 3 mins to continue the sc in a pattern that lets the blms mb. It is rare I ever see the melees organize with the blms to setup a sc in end game events and then successfully mb. In many scenarios, the blms are more focused on the stun order than paying attention to a mb.

Those same arguments can be used against not having the +mb dmg earring too. More mp = more nukes or use bigger nukes = more dmg. The question is which will net you more, the +5converse mp & +1mph or the +mb dmg. There was a thread I saw a few months back about +conserve mp from the blm's af2. It's testing showed it to have a decent effect on the proc rate. I believe Nicollete posted it.

The +conserve mp is far more versatile, will get used all the time, and is valuable to all mage jobs except smn (unless by chance it works like rostrum pumps and gives the conserve mp trait).

I'm comparing it to Auto Refresh to see which one saves the most MP. You'd have to spend 2000 MP to save as much as you did on the magnetic earring during 2.5 min or whatever it was (don't remember the exact number).

And while they nuke normally too, most of the damage itself is from the magic burst since resist rates are quite high on some mobs (Fafnir and some weaker HNM's etc. not included).

As RDM, WHM and BLM, I'd much rather have the static earring that magnetic earring. Static earring have many good things that help a lot during many different events.

MP is simply not a concern for BLM, we can get MP back quickly. BLM wants to get max damage per nuke and lowest resist and hate possible.

The only problem with the MB earring is its situational use.

As far as when you MB, either exp mobs in a non BLM cannon situation, which is somewhat rare. Otherwise high level mobs like wyrms or Kirin(as some LS prefer) which is high resist and you want an elemental earring, so it's taking over moldevite not abyssal and is not too terribly advantagous.

Then the big problem is if you're going to use it 24/7 or try and swap it in. I think most BLM who have toyed with the Elemental Torque and Uggalepih Pendant will tell you, there's no macro setup you can do that will swap it automatically.

When you macro staves they can be swapped in based on element of the spell being cast. When you macro sleepga you can tell it to equip your dark staff, when you rest you can equip your errant, when you nuke you can equip your weskit.

But any situational gear, like based on MP levels, or if you're MBing or not, cannot be macroed. Furthermore if you want to swap them manually, you can't use any swaps at all. For example I used to have enfeebling torque and dark torque which swapped in based on if I was doing a debuff, drain or aspir or sleeping. I had to cut those macros out because in order to swap in pendant or elemental manually I couldn't have my spells equipping other necks.

Then when I finished I found myself just keeping the pendant equipped unless I needed the elemental magic. Very difficult to keep up a manual gear swap for more than 5 minutes. If I know myself, this earring will be the same way, I'll either be equipping it when I don't need it, canceling out the good it does by making my regular setup worse, or I'll fail to equip it for MB, rendering it useless.

I haven't tried replacing Static Earring with Moldavite, but I'm rather sure its stronger. Think I'll try it out sometime

For my particular situation, I am very heavily leaning toward the magnetic. The static earring looks extremely nice at first glance, but outside of Tenzen and the Pots, I can't remember the last time that I legitamitly MB'd something.
However, I solo on Blm. A LOT. So for me, I think I'm going to get more use out of the magnetic than the static. It really all comes down to your particular situation.
