I have yet to get my advanced job. I was considering Ranger, but I am Elvaan.

Is this a bad choice?

More specifically to the point, will I be considered gimped at higher levels by the Uber-Players and have difficulties getting party invites?

Is it the ideal race for ranger? The answer is no. Some of the hard-core gamers will pass you up just based upon your race. Furthermore, you will need to farm like a mother to get the very best equipment possible. You need to build a good reputation, and that means delivering on the ranger's strong points: good damage and accurate attacks.

On the flip side of the issue however, don't dismiss the idea of Elvaan ranger just because it's difficult. I've partied with several, and the ones I have seen were quite good at their job. If you build a good reputation you will likely end up solving the invite problem like I did with Elvaan BLM: get invited to join a static party.

Wiht proper gear and ability any race can do any job respectabley. Howeer some races are just plain better then others at said job. If you want to do it you can, you just need to work for it.

Yeah, i used to think taru pld are so gimped. How i was so wrong, with a huge mana pool they get hate better than any race i know. Even i can't get the hates the taru gives ; ;

<--- Gimp rng.

Elvaan RNG's are gimped because they have 11 less AGI than a Mithra at 75? Wow.. I didn't know 11 AGI (Yet 8 more STR) somehow makes an Elvaan gimped. I could've sworn there was more than 35-40 possible points of AGI to add to your base @ 75, as well as over 95 points of Ranged Accuracy. But 11 points of AGI makes or breaks Elvaan Rangers I guess. Poor guys.

Jufa, I hope you take the advice of somebody who's played RNG all the way through (Me and Syn), over that of somebody who hasn't. Ranger is a great job in the respect that every race is basically identical in terms of accuracy because of the plethora of equipment we have at our disposal throughout the -entire- game (It's even easier with the Noct +1 equipment added with CoP). The slight AGI difference (5-12 points of AGI is slight) between Taru/Hume/Elvaan/Galka/Mithra doesn't make enough difference to notice accuracy discrepencies between them. And when I say "Notice accuracy discrepencies", I'm referring to seeing one hitting 85-95%, vs the other hitting 60-70%. If you notice a Mithra RNG hitting *noticably* more often than an Elvaan, the reason isn't because of race. It's because of either: Equipment, level difference, or a combination of both.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject.

Oh, and end-game, Elvaan RNG's are (IMO) the best Race for Ranger, due to the equipment you acquire at 75 (If you're lucky). Seiryu's Kote gives AGI+15 which negates any accuracy differences between any race (At 75, I as a Hume, hit over 90% on EXP mobs, and 85-90% with Dual Prelude on Gods). End-game, accuracy isn't what rangers want. It's Ranged Attack and STR equipment. We don't need accuracy anymore, we already have enough of it. We want to up our damage. This is why I'm kicking myself for not grabbing the Bushinomimi over the Suppanomimi after Divine Might. :(

yeah the retardedness some ppl make about race/class is sad at times it not what race/class the player is is how good the player is i ptd with a Galk/blm and he was spot on with MB and knew how to nuke with out gaining too much hate... as for elv/rng if i saw one looking for a pt i would invite him/her no question ^^

Elvann RNG shouldn't suffer too much. At around L32, an Elvann RNG using Silver arrows slightly but consistently outdamaged me, a Mithra RNG using Horn arrows. He didn't miss much more than me as we fought sahagins in Yuhtunga Jungle, maybe one shot per fight or so.

The only way you can get gimped as a RNG is if you use your massive damage dealing abilities at the wrong times. Either that or having a rotten attitude by pointing out your damage scores. Sadly, those things don't come through when people are /searching for party members, so they'll look at the race and make a biased judgment from what they've heard was the "best" race for RNG. In my opinion, that'd be Galka, oddly enough. :P Galkas get no love.

Just be aware that, while you won't have to spend hundreds of thousands of Gil on Sniper Rings, you will have to consistently put down Gil on ammo. Contrarely to other jobs, RNG and NIN can't level for one or two more levels when they get broke. But don't skip on good gear though, +1 Bows are practically a necessity for the huge bonuses they give to R.Atk and R.Acc.

Thank-you all for your thoughts.

One other question:

How critical is it to sub NIN for a Ranger? Can I do well subbing WAR and THF?

Dual Weild and Utuesimi (spelling I am sure is off) are extremley helpful from what I hear. Dual weild for TP and Utuesimi for pulling and as an extra sheild incase they get hate.

THF doesn't offer anything to RNG. Subjobs are used for their abilities/spells that compliment your main job. Can u tell me what abilities THF have that compliment ranger? Flee once every 5 minutes for dangerous pulls. Utsusemi is a lot more useful though. /NIN also adds more STR to RNG than /THF, and gives you dual wield.

RNG's that sub /THF past 40 are just considered lazy IMO.

WAR subjob is okay in very limited situations, situations where accuracy isn't an issue (Low-end IT, or VT mobs), a exceptional tank (I've never met more than maybe 2-3 tanks since the day I started playing this game that I would consider exceptional enough to keep the hate off of me when Berserk is up), and where mobs can't outrun you. I find that I can cross the hateline a lot more with /NIN because I can protect myself without the loss of my parties MP.

Hmm. Interesting.

It is my understanding that RNG subbing THF gives an AGI boost.

I guess my biggest fear with subbing NIN to RNG is the extreme expense.

But obviously there's a way to do it because there are several high-level RNG/NIN in the game.

Hume:
RNG75/37NIN
Base AGI: 73
Base STR: 62

Hume:
RNG75/37THF
Base AGI: 73
Base STR: 60

Hume:
RNG75/37WAR
Base AGI: 72
Base STR: 64

It is expensive. NIN and RNG are two of the most expensive jobs in the game. Put them together and...

But it's also the correct way to do it. Like Reality said, /WAR will yield more damage per hit... but all RNG, regardless of their Sub, have to walk the hate line. If the /WAR hits that hate line, he stops firing, else he is dead. If a /NIN hits that hate line, he can squeeze off 1, maybe 2 extra shots while he blinks off the hits, giving time for the Tank to regain hate. How much damage a RNG can do is entirely dependent on a good Tank.

There is a lot of debate on some sites to which is the better sub. /WAR proponents ignore the fact that all RNG deal with the same Hate line. And saving the WHM 60-100 mp by blinking hits when you Sidewinder, Slug Shot, or Barrage as well as the ability to fire while having hate AND the dual wield Archers or Hawkers for added accuracy... really adds up.

My advice to you is to first level up Woodworking or Goldsmithing/Alchemy so you can make your own ammunition. You will save hundreds of thousands of gil over the course of your career. And also take pride in your character. Always buy the +1 bows, and always use updated ammunition. ^^b

RNG/NIN is a lot of work if you aren't already rich.

talk to a punk named synical

My first and only mentor that I met here along time ago, Akamu (Galka BRD) taught me that there is no such thing as a gimped race.
The proper equips can compensate any races shortcomings, Its just a matter if whether you want to invest in the gear needed. Im currently lv'ing my Ranger to sub off my Samurai at lvl 60, and Im destroying mobs like nobody's business XD, then again, I have so much ranged accuracy + modifiers that missing is almost rare.

But then again I spent alot to get those items.

So, If you wanna do Ranger, go for it. If you wanna do Bard, go for it.
Lvl any job you wish and have fun!! do the research and ask questions as to what you need to compensate your races shortcomings.

Don't let anyones opinions stop you from the job you want to lvl.

Good luck to you ^^

well it seems u have made up your mind

but i wanted to say...

there is nothing wrong with Elvaan ranger

from my experience..... a lot of the time, people playing jobs that do not fit their best (ex: galka/elvaan mage, taru mnk/warr, etc) have done so much better than compared to.... the ones that complement each other better (taru mage, etc)

just dont slack off~

eeh, its not so bad for me. i got a lvl 40 RNG/NIN, and i do well for myself. although i do have 2x hawkers, emp pin, and leaping boots

This is one of those rare jobs were race choice will have extermely little impact. This job has more access to to rng acc+ than others have to +acc, huge difference.

Although the races technically have differences, they're not that big. This job can be equally amazing or horrible based mostly off gear.

For example, take whm, galka can ultimately become very good whms, but never reach that godly lvl. Or take taru war or mnks, they can get all the best gear and reach that level of VERY good, but never reach that godlike level.

Ranger is different, any race with this job can reach that absolute highest tier since the amount of equipment that can help this job is everywhere to be found.
