Anyone give this a whirl? I don't have an invite (because I didn't play the original!), but I tried it under a friend's account. I like where they're going with it, but coming from Guild Wars 2 the controls seems a lot stiffer. Questing is pretty MMO standard, but at least the "five bear asses" quests are guaranteed drops. Combat's also pretty fast-paced, but that might be something that was in the original. Dunno!

Game's also pretty, even on medium settings.

Spoiler:
If anyone has an invite they're not using and don't have a security token, I'd love to... uh... "acquire" your account for the alpha period to see how the game runs on my own rig.

Haven't heard of this title until now. But I think I'm getting MMO'd out, well sorta. I'm playing swtor still, actually kinda like it a lot still. The cartel market isn't bad, the game isn't bad really. However, the F2P model is pretty horrible. You are better off having a subscription, unless you want to pay a bit of money to unlock a lot of things to make the game actually play like you are subbed. Otherwise it's ultra restrictive. Thankfully my subscription time doesn't end for like another month or two so I'll be enjoying it til then. I may even resub once my financial situation gets a bit more stable.

Other than SWTOR, I have GW2, but the last time I played was during last month's Lost Shores event. Which was fun, pretty and had a fair amount of challenges in it, if you looked for and attempted them. God, that jumping puzzle was long, and really frustrating until I got the hang of it.. and some help from some fellow players, but it was rather fun once I got past the tedious part at the beginning and provided some excellent views that were otherwise unattainable. The actual quests in that area were enjoyable and what you would expect from GW2. The main event (the big ending) was kind of a let down though. They had basically scheduled it to begin at a certain time on the last of the event, and I missed it. It was a 1 time only deal too. Which is dumb. Event's like that should go on again at regular intervals, be it an hour or two, so that everyone can participate throughout the day. I really felt like A-Net dropped the ball on that event, but hopefully they learned from it and won't make the same mistake next time they have an event like that. There were a lot of pissed off people. Apparently many people also D/C'd during the final boss fight and couldn't get back into the game until after the boss had been defeated and weren't able to get any boss loot because apparently the chest was only up for about 5 minutes after the boss was downed.

The GW2 Halloween event however, was pretty awesome. I didn't make the big boss fight for that one, but it looked like fun and it also looked like everyone was able to fight him because it was in an instance area, so you could do it solo or with a party of friends. There were also tons of smaller events and quests for that, that I thought were neat. Not to mention the changes to Lion's Arch.

As far as new MMO's go. I think the only one I am willing to give a try on atm is going to be Blade and Soul, as it just looks pretty and the action looks like it came out of Naruto with all the wall running and whatnot.

I've got a security token on my account, oddly enough.

Haven't really taken a look at it though. I was in the alpha for the original FFXIV, and it kinda soured me on SE's version of playtesting...

I'll admit that ARR looks a lot better than the original did, but I think I'll just wait until it goes live before I reactivate my XIV account.

Ohhhh. You know, I didn't realize ARR meant the new FFXIV.

I may give that a shot someday, but only once I get solid confirmation of Dark Knights, Great Swords, and Scythes.

well yeah I mean that's why I put it in the XIV general but

I've been keeping tabs on some of the gameplay vids that were released pretty recently, and I must say I'm impressed with what SE has done to the game compared to back when it was first released. I'm actually embarrassed to say I played it haha.

So I would be willing to give it another shot once it's released provided I have the time to play.

I actually enjoyed the original XIV launch, as far as appearances (graphics and looks) were concerned. I loved the way it looked. I just didn't like the horrible UI lag/response time, lack of content, exp caps, the fact that you were limited on how many quests you could do in a day. Things like that, as well as not having the weapon types I wanted to use, were what turned me off to XIV.

Add:

I will say this, I just watched a semi-short video of alpha footage of two toons doing quests and fighting. I like what I saw. Well, as far as how the new quest system is set up. That's the way it should be. No idea what graphical settings they were using but the game looked alright until it showed a wooded forest area. The trees looked like garbage to me. I am going to miss the the realism that XIV used to show, in character design and area design. It was like.. realistic fantasy, and I love that. Now, ..doesn't seem to be the case as much as before. Meh. I will say that I like the way the new UI looks. They seem to be sticking with the XII and XIII style, but it works. I don't know what the dots on the lower right side of the UI are for though.

I mean, come on. Is it so much to ask for trees that look like trees instead of thin paper?

Those were trees! In fact, that whole screen shot is awesome.

It looks less like they downgraded XIV, and more so like they gave XI a bit of a graphical update but not a complete one.

I love the new UI. It looks clean and modern.

I managed to get an invite during the first round. To my surprise, not liking XIV at all, I love what little bit of the game there is in the alpha, it's a solid game. I've leveled all the available classes/crafts to max, ran the dungeon (more times than I can count), done all the quests and leves, yet I still hop on and play... a lot. I can't wait for it to come out and I'm very glad I managed to get Legacy status just before they cut off 3-month sub fees on the original now.

As for the graphics, they aren't very impressive at all, but they could be given the time-frame. The options here are extremely limited right now. Before going into detail, I have a high-end PC housing a EVGA GTX 670 FTW Edition so I'm capable of making it look its absolute best. You guys have already brought up the noticeable lack of detail in the trees and such, as well as how they look like paper cutouts. I'm guessing those images are still somewhat compressed for whatever reason, I don't see them staying this way though. The main problem comes in with the lack of high resolution textures. What you get is ambient occlusion and HD effects bouncing around, glowing/shining off crappy textures and that just makes things look horrible. It's like a blurry, low-res HD on everything right now, is the best way I can explain it. Then they have this effect on everything that creates a glow, most notable in an inn or near a light source (not ambient light, ex the sun, but like a room light) and the glow seems to be, like a lot of things, not linked to any AA code, oddly enough, forcing AA in the Nvidia control panel doesn't even provide some things AA. So ultimately, right now, what you have is a game that looks "fuzzy", jaggy, and ill-lit (though not in a sense that it's dark, in fact, there is too much light). This is an alpha though and graphics are generally rough in this phase, this is normal. It's still cause for concern though given how much emphasis the team has put on making this one of the best looking games out there (on the PC).

The U.I. is great. It's very, very clean and straight forward, like any great U.I. should be. It's also fully customizable and the U.I. editing mode is very intuitive making it very easy to get things how you like them.

There are a few things though that really do concern me, though they'd be easy fixes. The controls aren't really "stiff" (the animation however is) as someone put it, but they're off from the norm. It uses your typical WASD movement style, but with A and D you can't turn, only strafe. Simply put, it only allows for 4 directional movement in the traditional format. The normal usage of movement with A and D instead uses Q and E. Once you get use to it, it's not a big deal, but it's awkward at first if you use those heavily, me, I typically move with the mouse and that works just as it does in most other normal (non-FFXI) MMORPG games. My final gripe here is party member selection keys, generally designated to F1-F(# of party member). F1 is you, F2 is someone in your party at random, and then every other F# is either you again or does nothing. It's quite frustrating playing WHM and having to click peoples tabs to target them, very frustrating given how slow and inefficient it is, definitely feels like a bug.

And finally, the control feeling in general on PC. PC controls in XIV were just awful. In ARR, minus the mentioned quirks, are really, really good. No mouse/pointer issues, and it follows the traditional MMORPG control feel really nice, again, something that XIV failed at. There definitely will not be a high desire to use a controller this time around for the game to play properly, if people use a controller on the PC, it'll be simply because they want to.

All that said, to touch on how I feel about it; I'm relieved. For years after I left FFXI I've been searching for that same feeling of belonging I got from XI. I've played tons of other MMORPGs but FFXI was a "home" in a world I wanted to stay in for years and years despite any sort of lacking content. ARR puts me back into that feeling, that I'm in a FF world that I want to be a part of, something XIV failed to do. So I'm looking forward to spending some great years in ARR if the rest of the content is as good as the Alpha content.

If you guys want to know anything specific I didn't cover ask away. I could care less about the NDA past posting pictures and videos.

I know they are adding a lot of the XI classes to ARR. Is Drk one that is available or listed right now? I think the answer is no, but I'm totally up for being pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately no. The only two new classes on the horizon are Summoner and Arcanist. Past that we know nothing concrete or to even speculate on. When pressed during an interview/live stream about new races or jobs past that, the group did mention bringing in at least one other race, by popular polling in Japan, it would seem to be Viera, at some point (not on release). However, Yoshi-P was quick to make that sound like "LOL U JPN guyz n yer bunny girl fetish!" On the jobs front they did say there would be new jobs down the line and that there was strong support for the more typical FF jobs (specifically missing a Thief class was ridiculous and that they love pirates), though they didn't say which. Dancer came up at some point, but it was more of an in passing mention during a segment that had no relation to new jobs or anything.

I know you're a man of the Scythe, and don't get me wrong, I think they're ridiculously badass too, but man, owning XIV - you'll have a free period when ARR rolls out. Give Marauder a go and turn it into a Warrior; Warriors are(were?) ridiculously nasty and have some badass axes.

I think the game being completely different from XIV may open up your desire to try something new at all. I found myself in the same boat with XIV, but in ARR I didn't care, the game was so much fun to play I just leveled up a WHM (far removed from my typical MMORPG choices) and well, there is no looking back for me, I'm down for the change now that the game is actually worth playing. XIV as a bad game needed something familiar to make me want to play it, ARR though, I just want to be a part of a good game, and that's exactly what it is fleshing out to be.

Well, hell. In celebration of my 5000th post, why not break a little NDA. This is my alpha character. Unfortunatly for alpha we're restricted to either male Human or female Mithra. Would love to give the male Mithra a look.

The images are a little more fuzzy and off from in-game, didn't feel like loading up Photoshop to edit so just went the route of the classic MSPaint cropping.

I do love the Scythe, but Great Swords are awesome in my book too. From the sound of it, they haven't added any new weapon types from what was available before in XIV and that my friend is disappointing. I absolutely hate the way those axes look.

Trust me, I played Marauder and I played Gladiator when the game launched before. I also played the magic classes too. In an attempt to kind of hybrid the the marauder and blm-ish magic into something somewhat resembling a Dark Knight in terms of playability. I would honestly rather just stick with normal Swords if they end up not having Scythes or Great Swords because I hate the marauder axe style so damn much. No thank you.

Well, looks like I don't have any reason to play the game for now. Maybe until they add what I want, but until then.. I'm good. I'll stick with SWTOR and GW2. Lightsabers, and in GW2 at least my Necro staff abilities look like a scythe when I attack and my warrior and ranger can use great swords.

If I were to play ARR. The only classes I'd be interested in playing, at this point would be the Dragoon or Black Mage. I might, maybe, want to try Gladiator and White Mage but I dunno. Still, lack of Dark Knight and Samurai is a pretty huge factor in my having 0 desire to play the game.

You know, depending on how optimistic over cynic you are; you could at least go ahead and level a few classes for their abilities in the event DRK or SAM ever gets put into play. Personally, I can't see a FF game without DRK creeping in, but then again, THF is missing right now too..,

Dark Knight, Thief, Ninja, Samurai and Beast Master will be probably come to the game in the future Yoshi-P said in interviews, but he wants to focus on magic classes first. Version 1.0 has 7 classes which turned to jobs but ARR will have 8.

Basically, you start off as any class you want:

Gladiator
Marauder
Pugilist
Lancer
Archer
Conjurer
Thaumaturge

At level 30, you can take on class quest to become that classes corresponding job:

Gladiator > Paladin
Marauder > Warrior
Pugilist > Monk
Lancer > Dragoon
Archer > Bard
Conjurer > White Mage
Thaumaturge > Black Mage
Arcanist > Summoner (New)

Arcanist will be there at launch, Summoner won't be at first.

I'm a huge FFXIV:ARR fan. If you have any questions you can just ask. I keep up to date on it.

Why does Bard AF look so froofy?

Actually I want to know about Bard in general. Didn't get a chance to even change classes during my time with the alpha, but I never really read up on what it did in 1.0 either.

I want to be a Lancer > Dragoon! I don't think my rig can handle this game though lol

Well, that's why it's coming out for PS3 too, before too long. ;)

That reminds me

I'm still suppose to have an in for the PS3 beta

FFXIII your ghost still haunts me even today

BRD in ARR is worlds apart from the BRD in FFXI. In FFXIV:ARR in the version 1.0 Bard was the job you get when you leveled the Archer class to level 30. Hence: Archer > Bard.

In the story of ARR a Bard is a soldier who uses the power of song to boost the power of him/herself and its allies while weakening his opponents. Basically, BRD is a mix and mash of Ranger from XI and Bard from XI with a little bit of white mage healing. It's primarily a DPS job while enhancing and enfeebling with minor back up healing as well.

The White Mage part is very minor. The reason white mage is in there is because to unlock a job in XIV, you not only had to have the corresponding class at 30, but its "back up" class to level 15. BRD's was conjurer.

Another example to better understand would be unlocking BLM. Not only did you have to have Thaumaturge at level 30, but you had to have conjurer at level 15.

Unlocking Warrior, Marauder at level 30 and pugilist (which becomes monk) at level 15.

Take a look at this link Xali. http://www.eorzeapedia.com/wiki/Bard At level 30, every 5 levels BRD received a new action up to level 50. I'm sure that will all change though come ARR.

Edit: Btw, I'm extremely jealous of you all for being in Alpha. I'm itching like a fiend to get in and try it out. Tomorrow is the last batch of invites and then the alpha ends sometime after Christmas.
