i wanted to start doing some assault missions and i was wondering about the rank levels. Do you get more points for having a higher rank and doing higher ranked missions or is that just for a variety of missions to choose from?

For every next higher Mercenary Rank you have to accumulate 25 "winning" points in Assault-Missions:
  • Every new won mission count as 5 points regardless of your Mercenary Rank
  • Repeatable won missions count as 1 point
  • Higher Mercenary Ranks do not need to do higher Rank missions for 25 points.
  • There is no maintenance reset for your mission and point status
  • You can only accumulate 25 points, all further won mission points are lost and don't count for your next Mercenary Rank

Points vary a little from Assault to Assault but the differences aren't based on rank.

Being a higher rank means having access to more gear (from the gate NPCs) you can exchange IS for. It also gives you more Assaults to choose from (and your Imperial Signet thingy stays on longer).

I think i get it..

ok, so if i do alot of assaults (preferably differentones) i can rank up to unlock more missions that might be better geared for my job and as an added bonus i get a higher rank and longer IS Signet thingy?

Sounds great considering that i can do whatever Assault mission i please to accumulate points for the gear i like. I thought missions got harder and yielded more points but heck as far as im concerned ill stick to the nice easy ones.

Well, the newest assault rank have harder missions. Awesome points too. Got 1999 points without band as a trio first time, and 1333 points as a trio all the other times.

Rather fun too, more strategy involved. First you have to kill the qutrubs to unlock a gate, then you have to help a NPC kill a Lamia. After that you need to get charmed by a Lamia s othat she opens the gate for you, and then kill her. After that you need to fight a NPC, but not kill him, as he's charmed by a Lamia. Once his "master" pops, you need to kill her. After that you win.

That sounds.. pretty awesome. Are the other areas like that?

Well, only had 3 tags. The first 2 we lost and the third we won.

It really wasn't that hard. We just had no idea what to do at first xD

The other one we tried we had to run around and avoid aggroing bhoot's (which cast insta death soon as they see you >.<) and avoid some NIN fomors and find their leaders. We were three on that one. First our RDM got aggroed by the bhoot and he insta-killed him, and then me and the THF tried to find the leader. He was a NIN/SAM that used SAM WS's. Wasn't all that hard, but if he missed zanshin kicked in every time, so tanking with shadows up was like tanking a MNK or NIN. Soon as he hit he hit for close to 200 damage <.<; Anyway, we managed to kill him, but he Mijin Gakured at the end, so I died and the THF killed him with 2 HP left... lol.

Apparently that wasn't the only leader. There were atleast 1 more left <.<; Gonna try the other missions on Friday xD

The one with the charmga Lamia is called Operation: Snake Eyes, and is probably a remake of Lamia 13, only more fun.

It also bears mentioning that if you're just interested in farming points, a number of the higher-ranked missions are way easier and/or more reliable than lower-ranked missions.

For example, if you're interested in Mamool Ja Staging Grounds points, I *highly* recommend you get past PSC, because the PSC Assault there is *waaaaay* too luck-based. Your alternatives at higher ranks:

PFC: Go on a killing spree (ignoring puks). Depending on jobs, may be difficult to trio in time, but it's cake if you bring more than 3 people.

SP: Kill one single mamool ja who likes to run off every now and then. Not hard in himself, only nuisance is that he causes (wimpy) adds and you have to track him down again. Easy enough with Wide Scan or some sort of pet that can chase him.

LC: MGS around and open chests and MGS back to starting point with their contents without getting caught. No real fighting involved. Get more points for more chests.

C: Reminiscent of the Azimuth Circle event - talk to a bunch of qiqirn for direction/distance clues to one specific qiqirn double agent. Win when you capture the right qiqirn, lose points for every incorrect capture. No fighting aside from any wimpy puks you happen to aggro when running around and talking to qiqirn.

(Haven't personally done any S, SM, or CS Assaults there, so I can't really comment on their difficulty. But my point is that even with a *little* bit of ranking up, you can get away from the stupidly obnoxious PSC Assault there and do some much easier and more reliable Assaults instead.)

The SM mamool ja assault is a ton of fun, you have to kill 200+ mobs that come in endless waves. The balance comes from the mobs are all very weak, I could kill most with 2 fists from my monk. You basically get to go nuts and kill as many mobs as you can; for every 20-25, you get a temporary item, plus you start with a few in your inventory. I don't think the points were that great(I forget how many I got), but the mission was a lot of fun.

600 points, but you can get 1300 (or 1200, don't remember) points if you also kill the second wave.

SM for SMash TV.

Spinning Attack could bust the hell out of that.

Yeah, that's what I was using Skaw. Plus they would occasionally give you a TP wing, so I could fire them off back to back.

the point of ranking up is indeed get a variety of misions. if you get to 5th rank you have at least 1 mission in each group trioable, for 1200 points or more.

rank up gives you 5+hour long sanction when your max rank, and access to IS NPC guard gears, some of which are very good.

easy missions to farm with 3 of ANY job for 1200 + points:

- Ilrusi: Searat Salvation( C) the best assault of all- 1200 points in 5 minutes, 100% win
- periqia: Defuse the threat (SM) can give up to 1600 with 3, usullay 1200ish. Black baron with healers (LC).
- mamoolja: breaking morale (LC) whm sub useful
- leujoam: Counting Sheep (C) usually 900-1k pt. Orihlcum and grass is good too but need specific jobs.
- Lebros: Evade and escape(LC)

Also, doing the same assault again and again is a waste of time if you plan on rank up. For fast rank up you better do the easy missions of that rank, usually 4 are easy, and then do 5 of the previous ranks. This way you can get 1 rank per week, almost. 2 people my static went from PFC to S in 7 weeks only.

ya hardest part finding people to do assault with, ive gotten SM ranks and ive only done. areas
PSC 4/5 PFC 4/5 SP 2/5 LC 1/5
most times spaming either golden salvage, Preemptive Strike, or Lamia No.13

Can keep doing the boring PFC/PSC mission for points, or can rank up for the C-SM assults that are fun and fast.

Personaly, I'l not do anything under C rank unless someone needs help with a win. Doing them is like pulling my tail, it hurts. For excitment, I had my pld/war solo a chest in golden salvage and win.
