I've been looking on Allakhazam.com and QCDN boards to answer these questions for me but I cannot find the posts that I am looking for. I know that if you have a certian amount of STR your attacks will go to a certian level, certain amount of DEX allows for a certian percentage of ACC+ gear actually being utilized, AGI for ranged ACC+ and all that stuff... I want to know exactly how much ACC+ ATTK+ RACC+ will actually help compared to what my attributes actually are.

If I have say 69 total DEX, will I actually see the +51 ACC bonuses I have or not. Just an example. Whats the exact equations? >.> I should know this but I don't.

Thanks~

Increasing your DEX won't really aid the ability for your ACC gear to take effect. Let me start from the top--there are seven base stats:

STR
DEX
VIT
AGI
INT
MND
CHR

These stats affect things in a linear way, like so:

Ch1-13.gif

For example, the difference between 50 STR and 70 STR is the same as the difference between 70 STR and 90 STR, so you can add STR to your heart's content and always see results. Now beyond these stats, it gets a little mirky:

STR affects ATK & RNG ATK
DEX affects ACC & Critical Hit %
VIT affects DEF
AGI affects Shield, Parry, EVA (Guard too?), RNG ACC, & Critical Hit % against you
INT affects Elemental Magic, ability to enfeeble with certain spells, & resistance against Black Magic
MND affects Cure Potency, ability to enfeeble with certain spells, & resistance to offensive White Magic
CHR affects Charm Duration & Success Rate of Song Enfeebles

I may have made a minor mistake or two in there, but bear with me. I also excluded a few things like "enhances some weapon skills" because that's not really a stat. Alright, so the problem with this new set of stats is their graphs are not linear--they are exponential, like so:

exponential_graph_2.gif

So the first few points you add to it are great, but as you add more and more you realize that it's not helping as much. For example, the difference between 200 and 300 ATK is probably about the same as the difference between 300 and 500 ATK. You need to add more and more to see fewer and fewer results. Eventually you come to a number where it's just not helping to add to the numbers anymore (unless you're facing a level 90 HNM, in which case you probably will never get anywhere near the relative maximum of the curve).

I know more about STR and VIT so I will talk about those for a moment. Let's say that you are in an XP party hitting Robber Crabs for 70-100 per hit (not counting criticals) and quite frequently hitting the crab for somewhere near 70 and somewhere near 100. That's quite a wide range so you would probably benefit from more ATK. This will raise your average damage. The potential to hit the mob for 70 is still there, but rather than your hits averaging to be 85 per hit (right in the middle of 75 and 100), it might be something like 92. You will constantly hit in the high 80s and low 90s now, with the rare 70-something popping in. Now, let's try a different scenario. Let's say you are fighting Catoblepas and you are hitting them for 110-120 per hit. You probably have an overabundance of ATK and would benefit from adding STR. Let's say you remove 20 ATK and add 5 STR. Firstly, the -20 ATK will make your average something like 112 instead of the 115 it was previously. Then the 5 STR will raise the entire curve itself, to something like 115-130. You have just changed your curve from 110-120 to 115-130. There is such thing as too much ATK.

If you want the VIT/DEF version of what I just said, substitute VIT for STR, DEF for ATK, and Robber Crab and Catoblepas for "you".

That's basically all I can say about this.^^

Vet, did you do that yourself, or pull it off some website?

Wow..

Wow Vet very nice presentation. Can you provide sources for your details? You seem to have a very good grasp on the information that I was requesting and I appreciate the time you spent typing that. If you can also provide sources or links where I can read on this further that would be great. But as it stands for now I know now why so many people opt for STR+ at later levels, Ie. using Triumph Earrings instead of attk+ earrings and such. But kudos for the intel. 8)

I agree with Vet's analysis, at least in the att:str :: def:vit respect.
Are you seeing wild variation in your damage? Improve your attack.
Are you seeing low damage no matter what? Improve your strength.
Are you seeing wild variation in your defense? Improve defense.
Are you just plain taking too much damage? Improve vitality.

And yes, it seems that strength and vitality have no caps. They're probably linear. Defense and attack, however, have diminishing results given a certain level of strength or vitality. Your total output is dependent on the limited equipment slots. That's really the cap.

Accuracy is probably the same way. It may have varying returns based on how much dexterity you have. Thus, a thief may be able to make more use out of accuracy gear than a warrior, because their linear factor is higher. Thus, their accuracy returns may diminish more slowly. Thus, while the warrior thinks it may be dumb to equip more than 30 acc, a thief might think 40 isn't enough. The warrior may instead choose +85 attack, while the thief may think that's an utter waste.

I'm a str/atk whore, so I'll have to use that example too. Substitute your stats where they seem appropriate... the fabled Lady Seryn on Alla, who's been WAR for a hell of a long time, made this whole concept seem so much more clear to me with a brief sentence.

You're in a room. STR is how high the roof is, ATK is how high you can jump.

Now ideally, you want to be able to touch the roof about half the times you jump. You can keep raising the roof (jump around! HUP HUP jump around!), but it becomes pointless because you can only jump as high as a sleeping elephant can. Thus, you want to raise your jump height until you start hitting the roof too often, then you want to raise the roof. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I would imagine the same goes for DEX & Accuracy and STR & Ranged Accuracy, but I dont know if that relation can be applied to VIT & Defense.

It also depends on what job you're playing. Thieves have to do some pretty oddball things with their equipment that other melee would not do.

. . .

hey Vet, i /salute you. Its nice to see that more people understand the dynamics of how stats work. I dont know you personally, but i'm willing to bet that you have at least leveled PLD to a decent lvl havent you?

No, that was off the top of my head. I must have absorbed it mostly from Allakhazam to be sure, but there could have been a few things in there I heard in-game. It's kind of sad how much I know about this when I pulled like a 3.2 weighted last semester.

Good stuff there ^^ although I have been told there is no proof that int raises the capacity for the blm enfeebs by my rdm friend. Not going to get into that though, very decent post :D
