I will be going to Australia in March for 3 weeks. Has anyone been before and do you have any recommendations or advice on what can make the trip easier? Things like take a power plug converter, they drive on the left side of the road, many Aboriginal people don't want to have there pictures taken (Travel Agent told me these things) ect... Like is the ok sign an insult there, or is the thumbs up rude, what about if you wave someone over , ect.

We will be spending 4 days in Sydney (opera house, the famous bridge, zoo, explore), 4 days in Melbourn (swim with dolphins, deep sea fish, explore), 3 days in Alice Springs (Uluru/Ayers Rock, learn some Aboriginal history, hike, explore, shop), and 4 days in Cairns area and go to the rain forests around those areas. Add in travel time and that is a full plate. Can't wait.

I plan on getting the touristy things like a digery do and a boomerang.

WOOT!

I've never been to Australia, but they supposedly have a rediculous risk of getting malignant melanoma (bad skin cancer) due to a hole in the ozone layer or something, so bring some sunscreen.

Solutions to all of these:
Power plug- bring a backpack generator with you at all times to run your cell phone, iPod, PDA, GPS system, digital camera, mini fridge and pocket cappicuno maker.

Driving - make sure to drive a Peterbilt wherever you go and have a sign on the frony proclaiming NUCLEAR WEAPONS ON BOARD and a bumper stick saying "I brake for SHIT!"

Aborginies - carry a really big camera lens and a 12 gauge shotgun at all times, and possibly super glue shubbery and dead tree brancjes onto yourself so as to blend in with the outback.

Then you'll be fine... Have fun!^^

p.s. I'm really bored.

i've been to Darwin and Townsville only.

both were small cities, but i loved Darwin the most because i met this chick and we ...

what to do tho'? i'm not sure, didn't really do any tourist stuff when i went... just like what a previous poster said... i drank & i got hot chicks with hot accents... *drool*

i'd like to go back tho'... ^^ have fun.

1) Pronounce the country correctly
2) NEVER under any Circumstances, no matter how tempting say: "Another shrimp on the barbie" (They will goad you into this and beat you sensless..
3) Fosters = Australian for Piss water. It's the crap they send to america cause no one drinks it there... Look at what the Locals are drinking...
4) Avoid Vegimite at all costs.
5) Kangaroos are cute yes, but they would kick your nuts off in a second...

Good luck!

Oh yeah... I think something like 100% of the top 10% most poisonous animals live there...

Cheers.

Phraust vegimite rocks! I have a few Australian friends and they got me hooked on it!

Kurgon have a great time and steal me a koala please?

Everyone I know who ever visited the land down under spent a great deal of time drinking their faces off.

It seems to be a common thread.

I'd fit right in...Especially with my famous "face-melter" bloody mary.

Kurgon,

check out Countrywatch.com there is a section on customs and ettiquete that is great for traveling to someplace for the first time. Probably not worth subscribing unless you travel a lot but there is still some decent info there for free.
