Movie Avatar: The Last Airbender

My theory about 3D: Everyone is sucking at the teet of 3D in terms of companies that have access to the technology. The thing is, this is a wonderful art that is truely enjoyable if done right. However, it is not a mastered technique, and should stop being used by every tom dick and harry movie manufacturer. Until it is mastered and not something that takes away from the movie itself, I refuse to see movies in 3D. Let's be honest. If you're going for the 3D experience, the movie could be shit but you'd still like it because the visuals kept you ooo'd and aaa'd. Similar, I would have a hard time enjoying a decent movie if the 3D was shit. So it's understandable that people are going to be bitchy about The Last Airbender if they saw it in 3D.

A large part of the problem is that the live action movies aren't being filmed in 3D, so they're trying to add the 3D effects in much later in the film development process. Avatar was the first, and so far only actual 3D live-action movie, which is why it's 3D effects were so good. The animated movies are just fine in 3D, since they can easily create the 3D with their rendering, but live action movies probably won't have good 3D until next year at the earliest; since they're still trying to get James Cameron's tech to be able to shoot the whole movie in 3D.

Two words. Tron Legacy.
That should hopefully be up there with Avatar in the 3D department. Totally looking forward to that in 3D.

Saw the movie yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. It's certainly flawed and I'm not going to tell a negative reviewer they're wrong for not liking it, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'm a fan of the cartoon, so I was able to fill in plenty of narrative gaps; someone going in cold would have every right to complain if they were lost. The look was spot-on, and the fighting was decent but sloooooooow. It's certainly more action than I ever would've credited Shyamalan for being able to handle.

Not too bad. Definitely a better experience than The Happening, which should only be watched with Rifftrax support.

My gf's younger brother, who loves the cartoon and was really excited for the movie, jokingly asked his other sister for a razor blade after watching it. He said it was worse than Dragonball Evolution to him. lol.

I went into the movie knowing all the changes that was going to happen for the movie. They had to have fire bending from a source so they wouldn't be too powerful. They also changed the way the names were said on purpose to match the international way the names were supposed to sound. As soon as I heard that they were going to make it in 3d (after the movie was filmed) I went and saw it in 2d. I knew it would be horrible in 3d. It wasn't supposed to be in 3d in the first place. The 2nd and 3rd movies should be way better than this one. I heard they might make a 4th to explain some of the things that weren't explained in series. Hopefully M. night shamaylan will listen to the critics some.

Considering it hasn't even made it's budget back in domestic box office I wouldn't be too ready for a sequel just yet. It might go the way of the Eragon movie.

They would have to make a 4th anyway, logically, since if it continues in the fashion of the first movie then each movie equals one season of the TV show. Thus 4 movies would be needed to complete the whole thing.

There's a 'Book' for each bending element. Water, Earth, Fire, last is Air.

Ok. I hated this movie. I almost walked out, but I was with three other people. I didn't read every single one of the responses in this thread so forgive me for addressing some things that have already been mentioned, and I will do my best not to include any spoilers.

I'm a huge fan of the animated series. Huge by saying that I think its one of the best shows on television I've ever watched. I wouldn't say that I'm a fan boy only because I don't go crazy over lore or even remember everything that happened in the whole series but I will admit that I cried several times watching the series and I grew incredibly attached to some of the characters.

I could go on and on about every single thing that I thought was wrong with it, but as I saw here some people mentioned, those are like, end of the spectrum huge fan goes nuts because appa's face didn't look as cute as it should have, or the firebending from the source issue (still think this is stupid but I'm not harboring any grudge over that). With any movie adaptation a director and writer are going to take creative liberty, I get that, but I think he just went too far. Ok - from here on in there might be a small spoiler, if anyone has an issue with them please let me know I'll edit the post.

For one - changing the name pronunciation.
I don't buy the excuse of "actual dialect this is how you say it". This is the airbender world - a fictional world where there IS NO ACTUAL WAY to say it. While the influence of asian culture is obvious, so is the fact that everything is fictional - made up. On top of that, names are more than just names, they are part of what attaches us to a character. Our ears are trained to hear "aang" and "sokka" not "ahng" and "souka". That audio training helped to grow and influence our attachment to that character. The second you take away that familiarity, the second people have to start re-thinking who they are watching. Is that really going to be OUR Aang, or does new Ahng have some new personality traits? Understand what I'm saying? While this might be completely irrelevant to anyone who is watching this show for the first time, you are losing quite a bit of the initial feeling for the character that fans have from the very start. Imagine if they changed Harry Potter's name to Henry Potter just because "Harry" is not a proper English name (for illustrative purposes). Imagine if they called Hogwarts Hugeworms because warts seemed to be too offensive. That would not fly.

I'm also irritated at the complete absence of certain characters - won't tell you which for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but it hurt, and I am just really upset about that, because there were two in particular that SHOULD HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN IN THE MOVIE. On top of that, where are all the animals that live in the airbender's world? Where are the koalaotters that live in the North Pole? We got a glimpse of ... I forget the name of the firebender transportation animals, but they had about three seconds on screen. One of the most charming aspects of that show was the creativity released in the flora and fauna - including some spirit world inhabitants, and NONE of them were there. This made the world a bit more detached for me.

The race card didn't really bother me too much, except for the fact that it seemed that Sokka and Kitara were the only white people from the south pole. Way to use a bunch of eskimo looking extras and stick some white people in there like a damned sore thumb. Unbelievable.

I hated who played Ozai - what a pansy - he acted well but he was NOT the right person for the job. Ok, thats nit-picking too.

Earthbending. What the hell? Its hard for me again to go into detail without spoiling a scene.

Lastly, the plot. Yes, the plot.

I am not so ignorant as to think that certain parts of the season would be left out entirely, that is going to happen with anything, ever, hands down. However, there were a few incredibly important plot points (in my mind at least) that were left out, and could have been added. I don't want to hear that it would have made the movie too long. If a bunch of brats can sit through a three and a half hour harry potter movie they can sit through a three hour avatar movie. Taking the short cut not only left out some shit that should have gone down (I don't care what you say), but it led to some of the plot being rewritten, enough for me to think "what the hell?". It kept out a lot of the character development, something which probably would have made the movie much better. I didn't care about a single person in that movie (SO two dimensional) and keeping in some of the action that happened in the season may have created more room for the viewer to actually begin to care about the characters and see them grow and change in their own ways. Sokka and Kitara were two of the most boring people I've ever seen on screen, when in the show they are two very dynamic personalities that really pull the entire story together.

The end of the movie was the biggest let down for me.
And if I'm not mistaken, Avatar Kiyoshi was a boy.

Yeah, sorry, but he murdered it.

Why I liked it a little though - it was visually beautiful. The bending action scenes (EXCEPT for earth bending) were incredible. I loved how the benders actually looked like they were using their body force to make things happen. I liked everything about the actor who played Aang except for when he opened his mouth. I did get the chills in several parts. But as a whole, I'm pretty sure that M. Night should jump off a cliff. I think that Nickelodeon should hire someone else to make the movie, start all over. Pretend this shit never happened. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

ARGH. I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

Ok - so I don't know if this was an excuse that he made up because people said it was so bad, but M. Night was interviewed and said he wanted to make a 'B horror movie'. If that is actually what he set out to do, he succeeded beyond. I feel like all the bad acting was intentional. I mean, Mark Wahlberg and Lequizamo are BOTH MUCH better actors than what they portrayed on screen. The script was intentionally awful. It was actually hilarious, if you ask me.

So putting that aside - the death scenes were fucking great. Kids get killed in the movie, you NEVER see that anymore. I love this movie, I'm sticking by that. Its incredibly enjoyable if you don't take it seriously.

There are only 3 seasons of the tv show though. Water, Earth, and Fire.

Hmm? I thought there was a new season after Fire. Like a new season currently airing. I've not seen it since I don't have the channel at my house, but I could have swore I saw commercials for a new season of Avatar.

They are apparently going to make a sequel series, that takes place around 100 years after the current story, but Avatar only ran for 3 seasons. Since each season was about Aang learning to bend that element and dealing with that part of the world, there wouldn't be an air season since he could already bend Air and they're all long dead.

I didn't think of it quite like that. I guess I just haven't watched the end of the third season. From what I've seen on TV so far it seems like they never quite defeated the Fire Lord, but maybe they did and I haven't seen it yet. I watched a lot of the 3rd season and all I recall was the group going into the fire nation for a while, launching a failed attack on the Fire Nation and then Zugo joining the group. I haven't seen too many episodes after Zugo joined the group, so I'm not exactly sure how many episodes ran after that point in the series or what events transpired. I remember some episodes with Zugo and Aang firebending a dance or something with dragons around, but I never truly got to sit through that episode because it was noisy and I couldn't hear much of it. But that's the last I ever saw of season 3.

No spoilers please.

Eventually I'm going to watch all of the seasons, starting with the first, with some buddies. We're already about 7 or 8 episodes in, I think.

One of the reasons I thought there was a new season is because the Nicktoons channel was constantly going on about "New Avatar" episodes for a while, but I've yet to see them. FYI I only watch Nicktoons at work when they start me off in the Juvenile dorm. That was all they would watch for a while there, Avatar daily.

There are several episodes after where you left off that does finish up the story.

The New Avatar stuff is probably the new series that they're making.

SHYAMALAMAMAN murdered the anime! He and his taliban family (yes, the ones he casted as the fire nation) deserves to sink with this piece of garbage he made...

A friend sent me this picture...it feels accurate.
