A year and a half ago, I decided to quit FFXI in preparations for a new life of marriage. After settling into the changes this new life has brought me, I am now ready to return to the adventures of Vanadiel (and prove that married men may still roleplay female characters). I was even lucky enough to be able to reactivate my long-forgotten character!

However, as I can see AH prices for most items seemed to have inflated 10X the value I remember, I have a very long road of gil-earning ahead of me before I can claim my Ochiudo's Kote, Jujitsu Gi, Brown Belt, etc. (Yes, a very long road. It's a good thing I'm stubborn.) So in the meantime, I thought I'd ask some questions about what has changed in this last year and a half.

I apologize in advance if these questions seem silly or stupid, but I wish to soak in as much as I can to catch up on things.

1. Did the old "lot/don't lot for items" debate ever get resolved? If so, which is considered more appropriate now?

2. What are your most useful/favorite FFXI information links?

3. What various items are required to unlock certain aspects or areas? I currently know of:
A. Kazham pass
B. Mogsafe & Gobbiebag quests
C. Airship pass at Rank 5
D. Beastman seals for BCNM battles

4. Are there any new macro commands or emotes that have been added to the system in the last couple years?

5. How difficult is it to find low/mid-level parties?

6. What was added back in the CoP expansion anyway?

7. What is "Sky?" (I keep seeing that name pop up in posts.)

8. What various rules of etiquette should I be aware of?

9. Any advice for a lvl 32 Monk aspiring to be the best she can be?

Thanks in advance for the helpful answers!

1. I've never really been in a party where this has been a problem, and I've been playing for a year. Generally, you don't lot for items unless you have a specific need (eg. a coffer key).
2. There's a thread here on QCDN. More specifically, here.
3. There's also "sea" (beat some CoP missions) and "sky" (beat the ZMs). A few other CoP areas, like Tavnazia, also require some mission mashing.
4. Not that I'm aware of. There's a couple of new ones for Ballista.
5. As tricky as it always was.
6. An entire new storyline, a bunch of new items, quests, areas, et cetera. Recently Diabolos has been added as a summonable avatar.
7. The Tu'Lia region. From what I know, it's a floating island.
8. Make sure you're prepared for the party. It helps if you know where to go, and it helps more if you bring the appropriate items and gear. Don't rely on the mages to cast sneak/invisible on you, or to constantly throw cures.
9. Hit stuff, and make sure you know how to skillchain. Keep your subjob levelled as well, although hopefully that goes without saying.

Thanks for the info. Looks like a lot of missions to do.

Would I be expected to have completed those area-unlocking missions to have access to important leveling areas in the future?

Most leveling areas are already open as long as you've installed the Zilart and Promathia expansions. You'll want to do the Promy missions (Mea, Holla, Dem) to Tavnazian Safehold and the areas around it, but that's mostly for missions. If you're level 32, you won't have to worry about Sea or Sky for quite some time.

Personally I don't use my NPC to help farming all that often. They only last a certain amount of fights so not so good in the long run and the big thing is to get them leveled. They start at level 30 and top out at level 60. They get experience from mobs like they were soloing them while fighting with you. So if you want to use them to help farming I waited until I was 45-50 and did crawlers in rolanberry. They get the experience and I got the silk thread. But as a 32 the things you would farm wouldn't give alot if any experience to them.

As drg I love having 2 pets though.
