You would think with being one of the most popular banks in Florida, Bank of America could offer free checking. If you have autodeposit setup from your job or somewhere everything's all good n' fine, but... If you stop said auto deposit, or are out of work, or just don't like auto deposit... they charged about a $6 monthly maintenance fee & if you go negative... they charge you a $30-40 overdraft fee for them putting you negative.

Wells fargo college checking FTW, I stopped going to college years ago!

bank of america also has the worst customer service ive ever had to deal with as far as the banking industry goes.

wachovia by far has been best for me. :)

There's no excuse for a huge bank like Bank of America to not have free checking. What gets me the most is this... Getting charged overdraft fees on shit your not buying, that's probably the main thing tickin me off right now.

Which reminds me of a previous situation with them. I have 2 checking accounts with BOA. I have been cashing checks for my mother for years, lent her money and had electronic withdrawls coming through at midnight (websites I own, FFXI, cellphone bill, etc.). Sooo I went to deposit her check into my account again with her in the car and only the drive-thru was open. The teller refused to deposit the check without my mother signing some crap for them inside which was closed off. The ATMs in the area were no longer accepting deposits at the time due a recent fraud issue. Due to a supposedly new or bs procedure, I got overdrafted in my smaller account. I called cust. service & complained about them being the reason for my overdraft. (ever notice the fine print where companies reserve the right to change policies, etc. without giving prior notice to the customer?)

As some of you know, when you end up overdrafting... Instead of just overdrafting on the 1 larger item, they overdraft you $30-40 bucks per little item (And I'm talking about shit for like $1-5). All items occur on the same day yet the largest purchase/payment always seems to be the one to appear as having come 1st in your banking records.

The fact that almost every other even moderate-sized bank offers it is all the notice you need. No, you're not "entitled," but when all of your competitors do, it starts becoming stupid not to make it available.

What's more, this isn't a "loan" he was asking for. He just wanted his meager balance to remain unmolested until such time he could make another deposit. Alas, they felt like charging him for the horrid burden of holding on to (and lending out) his money.

A lot of banks offer "free" checking, yes. But every bank has their policy for what you have to do to get it, and it's never truly free. You have to do such and such to get it. For BoA, you have to have direct deposit or a few other options. It should've been explained to you when you setup the account and as soon as you stopped doing whatever it was (in this case direct deposit), you should've immediately called and asked what you'll need to do to keep checking free. If you don't like your other options, close your account. Pretty simple stuff really.

Most banks will waive the monthly fee if you have a set amount of money in your savings or in a CD. Try (even if it is rough) to do that.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Been with Wachovia for a long time. Was with First Union until Wachovia took them over. I've heard nothing but negative things about BoA.

Well fact is I was just out of work for a short time. I quit working for a call-center that had me on their Cingular Wireless acct. Autodeposit will start up again soon with my new job, but with a different bank. After my current account is out of the red, I'm switchin to someone else who's got online banking. But ya... I just feel like my account was molested by a bank who cares nothing for it's customers. :2cents:

Also on a side note, I had a overdraft problem once before, only a few months back & the overdraft fees were $30 each. Now they seem to have bumped that up $10 more per overdraft, at least for me anyway. Maybe it was because of how the call went with their customer service & how they couldn't imagine why one of their customers might be upset. :coco:

Washington Mutual ftw XD

I agree. I have been with these guys for about 5 years now. Totally free and if I overdraft only twice a month it's free of charge. To top it all off, they have customer service I wished I could find in most fast foods joints. I was going to change banks just because the closest Wamu to my new place is 10 min. but during the move, Uhaul charged my card the deposit fee they said they'd hold off which led to a week spiral of overdrafts from running my card charge instead of debit. This sent me $800 in overdrafts plus the money I didn't have to cover the things I purchased. All I had to do was call them, explain what happened, and everything was corrected and I didn't loose a thing. Until Wamu is completly shut down, for whatever reason, I will forever use them because of the quality customer service.

As for Bank of America. I live in Texas so I'm not sure how they operate everywhere else, my Roomie uses them and their checking is free. He just has to pony up thirty bucks for overdraft fees which is understandable imo. You should never overdraft, period.

Oh. The only reason I opened up an account with Bank of America was for the $20 my mother got for reference. The suckers pulled me in with money and free pens!

Damn those free pens! I tell you though, if you want a free pen, just go to a pharmacy. Drug reps give them loads of freebies =)

Just take your paycheck, cash it, then stash the wad of cash in a plastic bag under your matress where nobody will ever find it. <.<

MUAHAHAHHAA.

Meh... The only reasons having a good bank is so important to me is for online banking statements, easy online payments (FFXI subscription for one), bill-pay, not having to carry cash & so people are less likely to bug me for moneys since I don't carry cash.

Was going to make a seperate thread till I saw this one.. F*CK WELLS FARGO!!!!!!!!!! I recently switched over from Bank of America (& yes, they do suck major ass) and I've had nothing but problems. A while back, the drive through retards deposited my check into Savings when the deposit slip clearly said Checking and we even told the retard Checking.

I check my account today and behold, some god forsaken how, I've overdrafted. Luckily, I have plently in my Savings so it covered it minus the lovely $10 charge for transfering it.

While trying to figure out how this happened, I notice one of my checks cleared..... DATED FOR SEPTEMBER 2! Last time I checked, today is still August f*cking 25th!!!! Needless to say, that pissed me off royally.

Upon further inspection I noticed ONCE AGAIN, they deposited my check into Savings, which ONCE AGAIN, was a factor in my overdraft.

As soon as that bank opens, some poor sap is going to get the ass chewing of a life time.

I use Quickbooks to manage my personal & business finances, there isn't a cent that goes by that I don't know about and this mess has me all f*cked up now.

From now on, all my money goes in a mother f*cking sock.
