So you want to level Dark Knight? Well, I will tell you my experience

leveling it from 1-75, some do's and don'ts, and the smart way to gear up.

Basic Gear Strategy:
We all know about Dark Knight accuracy. They couldn't hit water if they

fell out of a boat in the middle of an ocean. So whats a good way to make

up for this? Duh, accuracy gear. STR gear is good an all... But at lower

levels its not going to make much a difference, so build on your accuracy.

About the time your character learns Guillotine or Spinning Slash, thats

when you should start building on STR.

Basic Food Use:
DO NOT USE SUSHI lv 1-30/40 lol. That adds accuracy by %, and will

end up doing almost nothing at lower levels. Stick with Meat Mithkabobs

or Jerky or something, until lv30-40 or so, then pick up any sushi. (I used

Squid a lot because its much cheaper then Sole, but in later levels, I did

use Sole almost all the time.)

Basic Spell Use:
Lol, drk spells... DRK only has a handful of useful spells. They are Drain,

Aspir, Bio I & II, Stun, Sleep I & II, and Absorb spells. Do not bother with

the elementals. But be sure to have these magic skills leveled!:
Dark Magic
Enfeeble Magic

Do not fall behind on leveling these, even if your drains or aspirs suck, just

level them. They will save you, and your parties later on. Theyll also

make your WS's much stronger, and the enemy a bit weaker so fights will

go faster. Make use of Absorb spells!

Basic Armor Strategy:
Do not get defense armor. Thats useless for DRK's. Instead, get armor

that will boost your stats. Do not bother with Evasion, AGI, and like stats,

though. Focus on Attack, Accuracy, and then some other things. Post

Guillotine and Spinning Slash, start gearing towards STR, attack, and

some possible modifiers for your WS's. (Guilloting is STR + MND,

Spinning Slash is STR + INT, Spiral Hell is STR + INT)

Basic Weapon Strategy:
Lol. Ive seen some people leveling DRK that didnt touch scythe. Instead

they leveled GS all the way. Big mistake. The smart thing to do with DRK

is to level both Scythe and GS at the same time, because if you only level

one, its going to be a BITCH to level it once youre in the high levels. Trust

me. But make sure Scythe is leveled first, it will be your most useful

weapon.

Do not get swords, axes, or any of that crap. Get either GS or Scythe

ONLY, and when getting a GS or Scythe, make sure to get the highest

DMG one. Do not get a lower delay. Youre out to make big hits, not a lot

of little ones.

Basic Subjob Use:
1-30/60 - Take WAR as your Subjob. It will give you the most benefits

with Attack.

30/60-74/75 - Take THF as your subjob. Sneak Attack + WS's will be

very useful, but MAY give you a LOT of hate. This is why you might want

to stick with WAR sub until 60 (so you can have Trick Attack.) THF

makes a very good end-game sub for drk.

74-75 - NIN as subjob, if you have Uts: Ichi (Ni is also good, but not really

needed). This isnt very effective at all... But sometimes people call for it.

With NIN as your SJ, you will almost NEVER pull hate, but when you do

you have your shadows to fall back on. With NIN SJ you can also use

Souleater much more often without having to worry about dying, or

overworking the healers. NIN sub is also VERY good for soloing

(obviously.) It is also rumored that Serket was easily solo'd by a drk/nin.

Do's and Don'ts:
Dont make everyones job harder. Dont cast Elemental Spells, or Poison

or Bind, wasting all your mp. Use the mp you have on the stuff that helps

you and your party, and will give you less downtime.

When you get absorb spells, use them, but dont bother with casting

useless absorb spells... An example of this is using Absorb-CHR on a

Goblin Butcher... Absorb its STR, DEX, AGI, VIT and TP. These four

Absorb spells will be most useful for making mobs weaker to your party.

Do not only cast absorb spells before your WS's. Cast them throughout

your battles. When the time is right, and youre able to WS at THAT

moment, then cast your absorb spell to strengthen your WS modifier.

Do not spam Souleater. Sure, it does pretty damage, but unless you have

Muted Soul merited, dont spam it. It will just get you killed very very fast.

A useful technique is to use it when the mob is at 75-50% HP, when the

tank has plenty of hate. After the mob is around 30-20% HP, do your WS

(if souleater is still active) and finish off the mob.

DO! make a macro for souleater, and let the healers know whats going on.

Put a call on the macro so they can act accordingly.

(more to come, I think? Im not good at making guides lol)

I have a few things to say...First off about your equip suggestions. You make it seem like you should stack on acc untill the 60's, when really you should stack on acc and atk 1-75. Never really mentioned equip swaps. And for alot of you drk's out there that dont know guillotine has a 25% MND modifier...so yes, aqua rings > flame rings for guillo. Other than that go ahead and whore STR for ws. And the most DMG scythe isnt always the best, nothin wrong with swinging faster. Maybe its just me...but i never really use any spell other than stun, absorb-tp, drain, and aspir...(abosrb-str on occasion). I completely agree with you on using only scythe and GS, drk's that use any other weapon anger me. But scythe is definatly the way to go, unless your pt is making a lolskillchain. And uh, i think thats it.

DRKs accuracy isn't worse than any other job, the delay on the weapon is just so much higher that it seems worse. Ditching acc for str on guillotine is pretty close to retarded, especially on IT mobs.

As far as food, if you are really concerened about acc, go with Jack-o-lanterns, 10 acc and last 3 hours.

Spells, forget sleep and bio...that is all, only absorbs are really that useful.

Subs, I wouldn't, anddidn't use THF until spinning slash, SATA guillotine isn't as effective as having /war, and your TP gain is much slower. If you are subbing NIN and don't have NI, go hang yourself, then go sub WAR. Yes DRK does take hate no matter what SJ they use, especailly after any weaponskill (stacked or not).

NIN sub is used mainly with cannon style or NIN tank parties. For the most part, PLD can handle DRK/WAR until WS time. Don't sub THF unless there is a BLM there for an MB when you have a PLD tank, it's a waste of your job.

20-29 is a good level for subbing rng. Accuracy Bonus = +10acc. /war at those levels offers Provoke and a +10 def, nothing more (some stat mods obviously but they're far overshadowed by 10 acc).

Rice Dumplings are generally better than kabobs for the lower levels too. +5acc and +22% atk.

QFT, I too was about to suggest the same thing.

It is a basic guide after all, no mentioning of what you would want to do for skill chains, what you would want to magic burst with, equip swaps, how to use DRK in specific pt's/setups.
Also, you should use other absorbs, it helps a lot. Dex will give you a tad more accuracy and make your criticals happen more often.
Vitality will weaken the mob, and allow you to deal more damage.
AGI will take the mobs evasion away, and will also make critical hits more common...

Besides these, absorbing the WS modifier will enhance the damage quite a bit. Ive also had to use sleep a number of times in PT's, to keep add's from killing the tank. Bio isnt needed, but it is in fact useful.

About the acc, the more accuracy you have, the less youre gonna miss... and when you miss with scythe, its utterly disappointing. Thats why you should work on some acc until later levels. And no, DRK will not take hate no matter what SJ they use. WAR/NIN's will inevitably take your hate away. Unless you souleater every 5mins.

THF SJ definitely isnt a waste of the job. In normal exp pt's I know land constant 100's, with the occasional low damage's, and can SC for 1k+ each time, easily. After I took out my acc gear and started gearing toward WS modifiers, I easily deal an ass load of damage.

This is pretty general but Ive seen drks dual wield sword and do some sick dmg at lower levels even if its for one battle they still do alot better than those 500+ delay scythes. this is /nin also.

And Aqua Rings are not better than Flames for WS I can garuntee that. Str will help in two ways. Its a mod on the WS and your dmg varies when you compare your Vit to the mobs Str.

Ruffy:
I'm still not gunna use the different absorb spells, cause i'd rather be swinging that slow ass scythe rather than spending time casting spells (yes, even after the update). I used to use them, and i really saw minimal change in dmg.

Ugotjacked:
You do realize that aqua rings give +2 str and +5 mnd right? So having +4 str and +10 mnd in my opinion is alot better than +10 str and -4 mnd (considering flame give -2 mnd each...).

You said it was because DRKs acc sucked, DRKs acc isn't any worse then any job that doesn't have ACC bonus.

I've tanked plenty of fights DRK/NIN and not had MNKs or WARs rip hate without SE, with simple WS, no buffs. WARs have to actually voke to grab hate back, even rampage doesn't always peel hate off me.

If you aren't doing SC/MB THF is useless. You lose 25% ATT 60% of time, you miss on a whole lot of extra TP from DA, and if the mob doesn't get turned, SS is highly inaccurate.

Triumph Rings.

Edit: What Ugot is right, STR will always make your WS better, even if something else gives your WS a higher modifier. That is why RNGs always stacked STR and not AGI with Sidewinders.

My current TP build yields me about 90-95% ACC, and puts me usually just below the WARs, and above the MNKs (I can beat most average players of either job, I'm comparing above average players). I don't need to waste 1-2 swings debuffing a mob that isn't going to last more than a minute.

In the past I would use an abs as the mob was getting tocamp after already engaging so I would swing right as I was done casting, and maybe once after I had reached 100tp if I was waiting on partner, or saving for next fight.

Casting while TPing is a waste of time, especially as the higher you get, the more resists you start to get.

Raja's Ring / Flame is the way to go, or Triumph in place of Flame.

You can lay off the acc on Guillotine a bit at 75 if you have a Snow Gorget. I've found that I almost never miss now that macro off PCC for Snow Gorget on Guillotine. I also agree that STR is the way to go for ws. If you tinker with your gear to get +MND, you have to take off all the +STR +DEX +acc +atk gear that are staple drk equip. The -2 MND from one flame ring isn't going to kill you, even -4 from two.

about the acc, isnt acc cap 90%?

and I dont get resisted a whole lot, maybe 25% of the time. But I can always always get a abs-int and str out of it to boost my spiral hell

I definitely toss the acc for str at 75, except on mamools...they really piss me off. Other than that....up for a vahzl climb so I can gets my rajas?

About abs spells. I don't piddle around with anything that isn't abs-tp in xp pts unless I'm just really bored and want to try to do a really high ws. It just isn't worth the time, really. Even with the new lower casting timers you're still giving up half/full-swing to use an absorb spell, and if it isn't abs-tp then you're slowing down your tp gain. If you have the spare mp to pull off an abs-str while the mob is incoming then it's okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.

I climbed Vahzl with three different statics before I finally got one that got me sea. ; ; But you might be able to convince me if you catch me in a good mood.
