I'm twenty years old and still not sure what I want to do with my life. I have several options open to me, all including things I love. These options are film, creative writing, and teaching.

While I was still at my community college one of my teachers approaced me and told me to take the Basic Skills Test. It's the first hoop for people wanting to further a career in teaching, and I should take it before it got too late.

Well, after paying an $80 admission fee and spending about an hour on the road driving to NIU, I finally got to take the test.

It was hard, brutal, and near five hours long. I was so drained the rest of the day, and that was back in April.

Well! Today I got an email that told me I passed the test with a 'B' average! I'm so excited I can barely contain myself. Not only does this put me on a good path, but schools can look at my test scores and that will give me a head start on any other students.

Just thought I would share. I'm going to go dance the funky chicken now.

Awesome to hear that Aly. Good luck getting into an education program. Seriously if most places are having a shortage of teachers to go into the work field, the chances of grabbing an even bigger scholorship are out there with those test results. With the way things look, it should not be too hard to get accepted. ('-')b

If you're to teach, teach people above at least 16. College/university students (as well as mature) are the best. Anything below is suicide. Fuck the kids, in my opinion.

That is ilegal for teachers.

You need to have at least a masters to teach college.

That's the problem with the way alot of people are anymore about teaching. "They're kids. Big deal." I always hated that. When you think like that, you aren't even giving them a fair chance to start with. If it needs to be changed, we need to get teachers who care about what's going on with the kids enough to want to help them. And unfortunately, society hasn't helped with that either. If a teacher starts to show he or she cares about a student, people seem to jump the gun anymore and think the teacher is doing it because s/he wants in that student's pants. It makes me feel like society is giving up on its future since our future lies with our children.

Aly. Congrats bro. I know you'll make a great teacher if that's what you decide to do. ^^

Actually, you'll find the teachers who tend to care, get abused, at least, that's the way it is here in the UK. I've been in classrooms, and I can say it's the children who have no fucking respect. I say, blame the parents. Yes, the parents. Raise there children with a little more respect, so they respect others, there elders, and people who try to help them. I'm quite disgusted at what people let there kids get away with these days, these generations have no respect for anybody.

Kid's leave school in the UK at 16, so this point is very right here. They tend to wise up as to what they have to do in life, and do infact become a little bit more respectable, but I've been in college, and still the kids have given problems. Infact, I say, don't teach... Not worth the hasstle and abuse they get these days. Put your efforts into something more productive like your Film amd creative writings, untill people learn to start raising there children properly!^^;

After you've given them a chance and they screw it up, fuck it, that was fair. If that kid chose to be a complete ass and the teachers tried, what else can you do? I rather not have one (or a few) people there and then screw up everyone else's education.

It makes me feel like society is giving up on its future since our future lies with our children.

Lies with our children? Yes. But not all of them. Only the few individuals. The few will eventually lead, and everyone else who failed in the first place will follow (read: work for them.).

As of now, I don't see much hope. Only a little bit of hope. Seeing their intelligence and what they learn (I have a cousin, 12 years old currently.I help her with homework in my freetime) is nothing but insulting back when I was in school. Things were so much harder then, but new rules/laws/regulations changed all that. You can be one complete dumbshit and still score a high mark. My children, probably (:nyam:) but the current ones? No way. Not with what I seen. Especially on the news, during results day.

Remember the few kids, who got A*, A*, A*, A*, A*, A*, A*, A*, A*, A then fucking cried? You expect me to have that kind of person to be the future? No way. Not especially if that person sulks and whines about it for weeks to come, and potentially commit suicide.

Then there's the otherside of it, the kids which get the shitter than average results, and go out of education, walk out happy and not caring, eventually ending up in some sort of work involving manual labour (like, a builder).

There's a fine line of balance somewhere. Possibly, the willing to learn ones (goes to college, then eventually university) while getting overall good marks but NOT complain and get on with life. As long as they can improve, that's all we need. Not perfect, but not a complete ass.

Actually, you'll find the teachers who tend to care, get abused, at least, that's the way it is here in the UK. I've been in classrooms, and I can say it's the children who have no fucking respect. I say, blame the parents.

Exactly what I think.

But as it has been said teachers do get abused. I will admit that. But again, alot of the ones who cause the problem tend to be the ones who parents don't care to begin with and are the ones to say they're just kids, big deal.

And giving someone only one chance? I would give them a couple chances before I would ever even consider giving up on someone. There is more than just one way to teach the student something. Maybe the way it was tried the first time wasn't the right way. Maybe the student needs hands on experience. Maybe the student needs it related to something he or she cares about. There are so many ways to try to teach someone something that just giving them one chance doesn't seem like you even gave them a fair shot.

Yes, some will lead. Some will follow. But everyone's involvement, no matter how little, affects the future. Those who follow will be deciding who leads. What percent of the population who could vote in the last presidential election did so? Those people who don't vote choose not to. Then they are the ones who turn around and complain that the current leadership is wrong and that people were wrong for letting that person into power. Their votes could have changed that.

Think of how bad that could possibly been in the future. We are currently overseas in a war that started over something some say was staged by our government. Some say it wasn't. Who is to say that this won't happen in the future and be ten times or even a hundred times worse than it is now?

And what about the students who want to learn? If all the good teachers just go to directly teaching college/university aged kids, those younger kids may end up not even caring anymore and not want to continue on therefore there would be less need for teachers at that highest level. We need to have teachers who care in all levels from kindergarten to junior high to high shool, etc. Some kids will never get the hang of things. Some kids who may not have might be able to do so. Some kids who love school may not by the end. It all depends on the types of teachers they encounter.

I'd rather have a teacher who cares about their students, is doing it for the love of helping these students learn (because teaching is the ONLY profession not paid as such), and enjoys the subject they're teaching than one who is just there because they just want to get paid and don't give a %#!@ about the students.

Great job Aly. :)

Now go forth and do what you want to do. And damnit, do it well like you know how.

Congrats Aly and if you have any questions about teaching let me know. I have a Masters in Early Childhood and Elementary Ed from a school in NY and I have taught both second grade and preschool.

We have excellent generic candidates for that on this board. Their names are Blazn and Sculli. And here it is:
