I don't honestly know how many of you go to starbucks on anything close to a regular basis. but i hope that there are some who read this who do, or know people who do, and will try to pass this info on to those who need it.

I got to work yesterday at my local starbucks at 615 AM. i'm not gonna bitch about how early that is, for 2 reasons: 1) it wasn't 5AM which is the opening shift, and i have 2 of those coming this week TT_TT and 2) i'm sure there are ppl who get up earlier than 430, or get up at 430 daily, so i probably have nothing to complain about. Anyways, throughout the day (which wasn't really so bad, i guess) i kept making mental notes of things customers did that were rude, or downright mean!
list time!

1) throwing your money on the counter: we aren't whores, ya know... we may be part of the "service" industry, but we aren't slaves, so don't treat us like we're less than you because we're getting your coffee for you. in fact, since you clearly don't want to get it yourself, you should be thanking us, as well as we're thanking you for your patronage. so, be kind, and hand us your money in a civil and polite way.
2) getting angry in line: dude. it's 630 on a friday morning, it's business rush hour, and you aren't the only one in this starbucks who doesn't want to stand in line. if you can't deal with it, then learn to leave your house 5 minutes earlier, or DON'T COME TO STARBUCKS! if you storm into our store in your suit, and spend the 5 minutes you have to wait in line staring at your watch, changing your weight from foot to foot while huffing and puffing or mumbling "come on!" under your breath, you may very well end up getting slow service from one of the more subversive and vengeful baristas.... like myself. however i'm also an actor, and will put my lack of vim and vigor up as the necessity to do it correctly! so not only will i be fucking with you, you won't know!
3) paying with anything over a $20 bill before lunch: dude. fuck you. you can't walk in at 7 AM, and throw down your hundred (see number one, you inconsiderate prick) muttering some half-hearted comment about "sorry, that's the smallest i have", and order a grande pike's place (for a whopping total of $1.86). you were downright LUCKY AS FUCK that i happened to have 4 $20's in my drawer to make your stupid $98.14 in change. otherwise you would have not only received 30 or so dollars in singles, but you would have cleaned out my drawer and ruined the mornings of everybody i couldn't make change for because i had none, until my boss set the time delayed safe, and got me change from it. like i said, fuck you!
4) if you walk into my store, i will be all smiles and personality to you. would it KILL you to be happy for once?: if you walk into my store when you're the only person in there, and then literally tell me to "just take the money and give me my coffee" when i start to say something that vaguely resembles conversation, then you are lucky i don't give you the box cutter to go with it. seriously, woman! grow a personality! i said "have you seen [such and such movie]" and she responded with the aforementioned curt snarl. wtf did i do to you lady!?
5) repeatedly telling me how necessary it is for your coffee drink to be decaf or sugar free. i heard you the first time, it's written on the cup, DROP IT! i UNDERSTAND you are diabetic or have a heart condition, because you've said it THREE TIMES!!! jeezus, would it kill you to have a little faith in my ability to do my job? if you've been given the wrong thing before, i'm sorry, but it wasn't me so don't treat me like it was!
6) ordering one thing and telling the person making it a different story: if you order a latte, and then walk over to the hand off counter (where we hand you your drinks, we have funny little PC terms for everything lolz) and then ask the barista "oh, you know, can you put any of those syrupy things in the latte?" like you don't already know, you're cute but fuck you. you may end up swindling starbucks out of 40 cents or so, but i think Corporate can handle that. all you've really done is make yourself look like a sneaky deceitful bitch to the people doing honest work.

look, all i'm saying is that we need some respect too. We have to deal with all of these problems hundreds of customers per day. when you walk into my store, i will almost always greet you with a smile, and a "Hi, what can we get for you today!". would it be so much effort to say "Hi, i'd like ----" in a cheerful tone? or if you're not having a good day, i've consoled customers as well! just don't take anything out on us! We're here to serve you coffee, not let you treat us like dirt. just because i work at starbucks, and ergo am clearly not the corporate macho man that wants his dry cappuccino at 140 degrees, with 6 and a half pumps of toffee nut syrup, soy and 2 extra shots of espresso, but i'm also only 18, and in college, so pardon me if i haven't made it to the top of the money chain yet!

ok, gotta add one to the list
7) don't assume we are gonna just be able to listen to your order once and get it down: boy, do we try our damnedest to do so, but if you have every box on the cup filled, and some more than once, you need to bear with me if i ask you for your order again. and also, if it's a complicated drink, wait for me to finish one cup before you start another, if it's a simple drink, please just go on. the more complicated the drink, the more time i have to dedicate to... parsing it, if you will. i have to translate the gobbledy++++ (w00t i spelled it right, the first time, and spell check agrees!!!) you just gave me of fritalian word vomit, and translate into what we know, so that you don't come back to us later and bitch about your incorrect drink (i'mma gonna add another to the list :P) we're trying, but you know what? we're not machines! we have minds just as flawed as yours, so gimme a second to make sense out of the disordered blathering you want me to make into a drink.
8) omg, we're human! O_O say it aint so!!!: dude, if we fuck up. we're sorry. but don't get pissy with me! chances are if you are polite and say, "oh this was supposed to be ---" we'll not only make it for you again, we'll give you a "recovery certificate", which is one of those little slips that gets you a free drink, whatever you want, one time use! but if you come over bitching about, "this isn't what i ordered!" then fuck off, and make it yourself!
9) be VERY VERY CAREFUL when picking up your drink, make sure IT'S YOURS!!!: i can't tell you how many drinks i've had to remake because somebody picked up the wrong one and left before making sure. dude, if your in a hurry, wouldn't it be better for you to take 2 SECONDS and make sure that's the right drink, rather than getting half way to work and finding you've gotten a double tall *dirty chai*, instead of a double tall *raspberry mocha*? dude, if you don't absolutely LOVE dirty chai, you are going to ruin your day with your first sip of that thing. (personally, i don't like chai OR espresso, so combining them is like... the rape and massacre of the village of tastebuds) if you start to sip something expecting a flavor like hot version of raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, and get really strong spiced tea combined with espresso, your day will be epic fail. it's like a curse really.

would it KILL y'all to just be good nice people to your baristas? please? we're friendly ppl, and those people that ARE nice usually are the ones we have relationships with outside of starbucks too! i met a really nice woman who's taking piano with the dean of my college, and she gave me her business card because we were talking about brahms when she came in, and she was just so excited that i was a musician from the school where her teacher is dean that she offered to accompany me if i ever needed her! DUDE! do any of you know how hard it is to find a good accompanist when you need one at a music school? by the time you need one, EVERYBODY needs one. now i have one that NOBODY else at my school knows! she's MINE! mwahahahah!!! [cough...] sorry. but seriously! be nice, we're nice, it doesn't hurt! i promise!

i'll leave you with a description of this little old lady who is IMHO the greatest customer i've ever met. She comes in usually every day, mid-afternoon ish. and orders the same thing every time. she might get a larger one on a particularly cold day, but usually it's a decaf tall nonfat with whip peppermint mocha. she's adorable, and polite, and sweet, and knows us all by name, and we know her by name. she's always asking how school is, or asking our manager how her dogs are (my manager has 2 show dogs, both irish wolfhounds O_O BIGBIGBIG puppies) and she deserves a friggen award for being the greatest starbucks customer EVER!

so there, be like her. you should come visit me in my starbucks and observe her, to learn how a good starbucks customer should act.

to all of you who are already good starbucks customers, thank you very much. i appreciate your kindness, cuz as much as we smile, being there from 5 in the morning till 230 sucks bigger balls than pee wee herman and Miros' illigitimate man-children.
fo' sho' :)

(<3 miros: you're just who i thought of when i was thinking of who to make fun of for sucking balls... i'm not really sure why... but [shrug] if the condom fits!)

These are the exact reason why I went on a 10 minute break 2 years ago and just never showed back up to work, there.

i would totally do that. but i have this slight problem of *enjoying* everything else! and i luckily work in a slow enough and small enough town that we don't get *too* many assholes.
well, i don't have another job is another problem with me quitting <_< and apparently i'm in for a raise soon!!! w00tw00t!
i totally understand tho.

For some reason, I don't see anyone who orders a, "dry cappuccino at 140 degrees, with 6 and a half pumps of toffee nut syrup, soy and 2 extra shots of espresso" as macho.

This is why Tim Hortons > Starbucks.

Great rant and props to you, there's no way I could put up with that shit. (A few more paragraphs would help with the eyes also.)

"If a person in line cant decide what it is they want in the half hour it took to get up to the counter i should be allowed to kill them." Dr. Cox

but i hear you. i work at a Buffalo Wild Wings that shares a parking lot with a movie theater. yesterday i had this table of people come in to our restaurant and get moody with the waitress/bartender cause they were gonna be late for their movie.

We're thinking why the hell would you come to a restaurant when your movie is gonna start soon. they took like 3 bits of their food, payed (no tip), and left. one guy later came back asking if we had boxed up his food for him. he told his asshole friends to let us know he was going to return but they didn't. people that get all pissy with us for things that are their fault gets on our nerves.

When I worked at the supermarket, I used to hate it when people put their money on the conveyor belt, to the point where I actually let the money slide down between it and the cash register. Apparently, people can't have enough courtesy to hand me the money (picking up coins on a metal surface sucks).

Don't hand me your whole damn key chain and expect me to fish through your 100 keys, 43 key chains, and 13 "Use your card and save at this supermarket!" to look for your grocery store card. Put down the damn magazine and fish for it yourself.

And if I see you trying to hurry me up, I will go extra slow. I'm not responsible for you if you walk into late work because you shop on your lunch break.

Working with the public sucks in general.. why? because some people just have to be dicks to make it through the day.. I have always worked with the public and it doesn't matter how nice you are to them.. most are going to meet your smile with a frown and a sarcastic attitude. But there are those few times where you smile at someone thats all frownie and they actually smile back.. Thats the only reason im still nice to people, for the few decent ones out there. Dont worry .. its not like you are gonna be working there forever :)

Any customer service job is this way; assholes are not unique to Starbucks. People have completely unrealistic expectations and are flat out unwilling to stop and put themselves in your shoes. Customers have a wonderful sense of entitlement, and zero sympathy or courtesy in most cases.

I stand in solidarity with others who work/have worked customer service. When I worked at a UPS store right in the heart of foo-foo fancy downtown Chicago (Water Tower/Gold Coast) I had to deal with some of the most self-entitled bitches (both male and female) I've ever encountered. We were on first-name basis with all of the concierge workers and delivery guys in the area, and some of the people in other stores (including the Starbucks close to us), they'd all usually come in during the quiet hours to shoot the shit with us. I honestly think the Starbucks stories were the worst, there's just something about people who are willing to spend $5 on a daily coffee, where they seem to think that doing so gives them the right to treat service people as subhuman. Not everyone, obviously, but it's a more common phenomenon there.

Actually, I take back what I said about Starbucks; the worst stories of assholishness came from the workers at the American Girl store. Imagine all those self-entitled bitches had daughters, and raised them to be self-entitled bitches with absolutely no concept of what it's like to work for a living. Then turn them loose in a store that sells $150 dolls with outfits that cost more than the clothes I put on my real kids' backs. That's American Girl.

No offense to Starbucks customers, but 85% of people I have met that are Starbucks regulars are douches lol.

The joys of retail. T-T I don't go to starbucks much, but when I am traveling on the turnpike I know there is going to be a line and don't complain if I have to wait. Peoples attitudes in general need a major overhaul.

A few years back around Christmas time I was working in a pharmacy. We get this 200 page booklet ( not circular but we have them too) of everything that is on sale for the holidays You would not believe how many people that come in think that if you work there, you should have the thing memorized, like yeah during that time of you anyone in retail has time to breathe, One lady in particular was a pain in the ass about it.

She was asking me if some leg stockings were in there, and I told her that it was a possibility and the best way to find out is to check. ( shes doing this as I was ringing her up, with someone else waiting behind her. I stopped because I didn't want to charge her extra just in case and the lady waiting behind her was being so nice saying how she didn't mind and to let her check for it.

So the other lady is discontentedly going through the pages, probably not even looking at them. says forget it and asks me to ring her up. ( funny because the lady behind her was giving me this OMG face about how she was acting) So the lady is about to leave then quickly flips open the book TO THE PAGE that had what she just bought on it, like she saw it before but wanted to start something so didn't hand it to me.

If something like that happens, for the store it isnt a big deal, we can still reimburse the person even after they bought the items even a few weeks later. So she starts yelling and blah blah and I basically Just went LADY. THEY DO NOT PAY ME ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH YOUR SHIT. She got all quit for a second, and while she still didn't care I guess she kind of said sorry? lol But yeah I was so ready just to quit at that point anyway. The lady next in line said " I would have done the same thing, she was really ignorant."

In addition to that they would not ban this creepy guy from the store even though he was making all the female workers uncomfortable. ( a lot of them were still in highschool) After a few months he tried to get my attention from outside of the store, at night, and later that night tried to follow me home. When I reported it to the store and told them they had to do something about it, they said it wasn't there problem so I wrote them up a nice letter and quit.

Day after I quit they banned him from that chains stores in the area. And the lead manager transfered to another store a few weeks later. Go figure.

I'm a regular.
I have a standing order.
I'm no douche.
I work retail.
Assholes are everywhere.

I just recently quit my job at a gas station for many of the reasons you listed. But you never had to deal with people screaming at you about the price of gas (or maybe you did people are that nasty.)

At least when I worked at Wal-Mart I could get a manager to deal with those people, but most of the time there I was the highest-up on duty :( Now we could kick people out there but if that person decided to call the Main Office then its your job in their hands a situation none of us wanted to be in.

However once I had my 2 weeks notice in I must have kicked 15 people out in 10 days as opposed to 5 people in 2 years, all of them had the cops called on them too :P Court at 9AM sucks when you work 3rd shift ;_;

I worked service once.
I think I learned my lesson.

gobbledy++++

Absolute fail on the racism filter's part.

The entire OP was win, I agree, especially since I used to work in the restaurant and service industry.

I hate coffee, you'll never see me going into Starbucks or any coffee shop. Even if I did, I wouldn't be a total douchebag about it. People who do need to be shot, or at least have their hot beverage poured over their head.

OH i forgot one particularly pain in the ass customer:
10) do NOT come in 5 minutes before closing and ask for anything complicated, or ANY kind of frappuccino. i swear to whatever FUCKING deity you wish that i will end your negligible existance with as much force and pain inducing torture as i can muster and come up with. SERIOUSLY, do you think you're cool because you are some bad-ass rebel 16 yr old staying up till 10 in your mom's car with your slutty girlfriend and buying her and yourself a frap at 955? does it make you cool to be an inconsiderate douchebag?

ugh. i just got back from work. 215 to 1145. FUCK my life, srsly.

lol. i might just keep adding to this thread, since it seams a lot of ppl can relate to these! give me your stories! what's happened to you at work? i want to know i'm not alone lol. i hate being alone <_<

bout 2 weeks ago elph and i went to Pizza hut for dinner. they were out of the new pastas that we wanted so we got a half & half pizza. the girl that took our order was stressed out to the max. there were several groups of people there and she was the only person working the floor. even her boyfriend, who didn't work there, was trying to lighten her workload. a table that got up after they finished eating left 50 cents, the change from their bill.

it took us an hour to get our food, but they comped our bread sticks to apologize. our bill was $20, i dropped her a $50 and told her to keep the change. the smile on her face was all the thanx i needed.

I used to work for a coffee shop in England....if the customer was a douche we promptly refunded their money, and told them to GTFO, in much nicer words though....I agree with everything you have said though
