Hey guys! I am hoping all of you can put in some constructive advice on a viable subjob for Beastmaster. Me and Kotsu are static trio-ing our Beastmasters with Hollie (pup) and I am curious about what I should really be using to be effective. Hollie (Main: 75rdm 75 drg) and Kotsu (Main : 75 whm) are both subbing WHM so I figured I could sub bard for the one status boost we could get out of it.

Is BST/BRD a viable combination in this setup? Or should I just sub WAR for DD purposes? I like playing Beastmaster and wan't to make our trio adventures go well! I like to be a good addition to the static as opposed to a leech. (cuz they are way better then me...at everything involving FFXI)

Just curious. Hoping I don't get blasted for being retarded!

Don't sub WAR. Having done a lot of duo'ing on my BST, you want to be equal to your partner(s). I tried subbing PLD once for the auto-refresh, but found myself pulling hate more.

There's always a fairly thin hate line when playing BST and you don't want to cross it. I don't really think subbing BRD would be a benefit. First your partners aren't going to have lots of MP on their WHM subs and you don't need them to spend it on you. Secondly, your BRD skills will be so low as a sub, that one song just isn't going to be a benefit.

I'd advocate going /WHM as well. It'll make it easier to balance hate between the three of you, and you can take care of each other as needed and no one person is stuck in the role of healer and/or MP sponge.

So you are telling me to sub WHM also?

Just to update you guys, I have merits in: Enmity + (1), Spell Interuption (2), MP (1), Cure Recast Time (1), Crit Hit Hate (1)

I'm taking Bst and Nin to 75 next, these merits help. Of course I have merits with WHM right now too, but the big thing is that if I want to tank. I will. XD Especially when I get another merit or two into Crit Hit Rate and enmity + for nin ^^

A guy I go to school with says he does BST/NIN in a duo static that uses jug pets and relies on evasion gear, but that sounds pretty stupid to me. Artem and I duo as BST/WHM and plan on switching over to BST/NIN at later levels. Both groups are in the 60-ish range.

Have the guy with Rdm leveled start to sub it at 62. Dia2 is useful.

Cure Recast Time (1)
If I'm not mistaken, that's WHM onry.

I would definetly encourage meritting MP. I'm Lv44BST (wow I know, so high lol) and I have 190MP with my gear on.

If you want to sub BRD, I'll let you know that even when I sub WHM (same CHR), I still mischarm EM, DC, and I once mischarmed a Stag Beetle in Jugner. At 44.

Baby Jesus cries when BSTs use jug pets and never charm anything.

Subbing either WHM or NIN would be your best bet. BRD as a subjob offers almost nothing since the skills associated with it would be so low and whatever benefits the job offers don't come close to outweighing the benefits of the jobs I mentioned. Subbing WAR wouldn't benefit anyone since you'd be totally reliant on the others to keep you alive and would end up creating more downtime than necessary, not to mention probably more deaths.

I don't know if this is the right thread to put this in (but it seems better than starting my own thread). Also this may seem like a completely retarded idea. However for some reason i've been thinking what would a PUP + BST duo be like? Would it actually work?

It sucks at the lower levels! We both subbed WHM and he couldn't rest when he needed MP because his stupid puppet would sit with him.

I've always been able to rest with my PUP engaged, so I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to in this instance. =/

As already said, /WHM is generally the best subjob out there due to being able to access cures and cover Poisona and Paralyna. Sneak/Invis are obviously useful as well, unless you're willing to burn money on powders and such.

/BRD would most likely become a large hindererence since songs pull a decent amount of hate (worse yet, you'd likely not stick any debuff songs either), and I'd personally not find a weakened Paeon or Minuet as worth it.

/RDM can be a viable option but only for very slightly better buffs as well as Phalanx, but you lose -na spells so this is generally not an open option unless you carry Antidotes (but then you'd still have the Paralyna issue)

/NIN...I never really saw this as terribly useful in the earlier levels. It makes for a bit better damage plus survivability (depending on the mob, actually) but unless you're stacked in 3-5 pieces of Crow Gear you'll just wind up pulling hate and becoming a detriment. Might work better in a trio, but I'm not too sure.

/PLD...is only really good post-70, so yeah.

granted its not standard meripo XP/hr, jug burn PT's work pretty well on trolls (about 10-12k/hr)... that said, im not sure how well it works at the level the OP is at

However for some reason i've been thinking what would a PUP + BST duo be like? Would it actually work?

i duo'd with a PUP once for gits and shiggles, and we didn't do too bad... the PUP went /WAR i believe and use whatever the healer puppet was which allowed him to tank somewhat
if i was at a higher level (at the time) to charm locals more reliably, i think we would have done a little better

as for OP wanting to /BRD, try it and let us know how well (if at all) it works

@ 24 I plan to switch to /nin. Cyruk /whm and Hollie will be on smn/whm. We'll be trio'in from that point and using jugged pets for XP purposes. I can make all the jugged pets we need until the 60's anyway, and with 45 thf I can farm relatively easily. I'm sure I'll be able to evade well enough and will gear myself accordingly. However, if I don't Hollie should have the MP to cure me up. We may even add another bst to the group and he'll be another bst/whm. 1 bst/nin, 2 bst/whm, and 1 smn/whm may be something strange to see. I have no idea if it'll work out, but it'll probably be fun. XD

You really shouldn't need jug pets that much at all except for those "oh shit" moments when there's nothing else around or you've caught aggro from something you want no part of and need to distract it for a short time. When it comes to actual leveling, jug pets are a joke against the mobs you'll want to face.

Whm is the only sub for bst until you get to sky!

The Tree Man has spoken!

Then again I was an anti-social Bst and Solo'd all the time :D

Nothing else is really as useful as /whm IMO. Rdm comes pretty close if you aren't fighting things that you need -nas or erase for.

Actually if you're determined to trio jug pets may well be necessary. To get good experience as a trio you'll need a decent gap between your pets and your prey, and you'll also need 6 pets to cycle if you're going to chain. A lot of the exp spots BST generally use don't meet both criteria.
