Hey guys, I was just wonder what is the best fishing rod? I have a tarutaru fishing rod, but I keep getting it broke and one of the guys in the linkshell repairs it for me. Its getting really frustrating how the rod keeps snapping and I never seem to get any skills with it. Can someone make a suggestion for a good rod for me?

carbon fishing rod never breaks.

Halcyon Rod is a pretty sweet rod for small fish, too. I like it better than the carbon.

Of course, the best rod obtainable by mortals is the Lu Shang, which is only topped by the unbreakable Ebisu. Both have highly entertaining quests involved.

0/100 lik, 0/11 gugrusaurus, I gave up D:

How do you get either of those rods?

The Lu Shang is obtained through a quest in Port San d'Oria. There are two NPC brothers having a fishing competition, so you help one beat the other by donating moat carp and/or forest carp. After you give the brother 10,000 (that's not a typo) of those fish, you're awarded a Lu Shang Fishing Rod. The quest can be maddening and it took months of fishing, but it was worth it. I love my Lu Shang.

The Ebisu Rod... that can be a much more hellish experience, and you'll need the Lu Shang to attempt it. You can't even flag the quest until your fishing skill is 78. I've toyed with going after it, but as much as I love fishing in FFXI, I don't think I have it in me.

You can buy the Lu Shang, but the Ebisu is Rare/Ex.

The Lu shang quest isn't hard actually, you don't have to fish all 10,000 yourself. Generally people fish normal money fish, sell them, and buy moat carps with that. By the time you hit lv 50 you'll have enough to complete the quest, and Lu shang is not needed before that level.

The Ebisu one isn't hard either, just need dumb luck. you have to fish two extremely hard fish, catch rate is like 1 or 2 per hour top, and zaldon in selbina has 1/100 chance of finding a rare/ex item in either, those items are needed to craft the rod.

I don't have a high fishing level. But I got to level 13 using the halc rod. ^^

Halcyon rod is the only rod I bought and used that until I got Lu Shang. Once I hit the 200 max fish for the day, I just sent the Halcyon rod to my 2 mules and continued fishing. Got Lu Shang in under 3 weeks.

I don't know if I can afford the halycon rod though, how much does it normally go?

Thats alot of gil, no wonder I bought my tarutaru rod it was cheap.

It's a very bad guide lol. A guide that tells people to fish their 10,00 carp can't be good. The fish you ask to catch are'nt the best profits at thier levels etc.

It varies depending on the fish you catch, but thats the limit for carp and many stackable fish.

Ok I will see about getting a hume fighing rod, what kind of bait do you recomend?

That guide is pretty good until you hit fishing skill 11. After that there are more profitable, easier to target fish to skill up on than what is recommended in that guide.

For bait go with little worms, they're cheap from NPCs. As I recall, you're Windurstian, and there's an NPC in Windurst waters north that sells them in addition to the fishing guild.

use a minow if you cant by the insect paste. buy it to the guild

Coming from a THF, it hurts me to see that 12-15k is a lot of gil. 12-15k has never been a lot of gil at any time in the game's history. I would also recommend Halcyon. Mine broke once from levels 1-56, when I finally decided to buy a Lu, lol. It only broke because I was going after something I shouldn't have. A Ryugu Titan. Not that fishing them at that level is wise or worthwhile anyway, but I just wanted to see if I could. I promptly switched to a Lu and caught one for a .3 skill up that got me to 57.

I'm only 61 and change now, but I loved my Halcyon. The breaks, if any till you get your Lu, will be few and far enough in between and you'll be able to reel in all smaller fish without losing your catch as with the Carbon rod. If you know an Alchemist in your LS or otherwise, I'd go with Halcyon, buying a Carbon rod for targeting bigger fish when you need to, and eventually a Lu. Think of your Halcyon as an investment. Use it to get you where you want to go, and then sell it back when your done. It should net roughly the same you spent on it to begin with.

Seriously though, go farm the SMALL amount of money. It's hardly more than a stack of silk, or a couple stacks of beehive chips. It's not a lot of effort. If you still think that's a lot of money or a lot of effort, I would strongly discourage you from taking up fishing.

Good luck.
