I'm impressed with the reviews and 320 gigs for $180 is a fair deal to me... same price as the Xbox 360's 120 gig, lol. I've been considering upgrading now that prices are low enough, don't want to do it too far into the generation when transferring over my save files might become a huge pain.

I believe that 5400 is the same speed as the PS3's built in. I am not sure about getting a faster drive. Would that speed up hard-drive based loading times, or do nothing at all as they software is fined tuned for the hardware? I don't know. Could getting a faster HD even screw it up a little bit I don't that.

Anyway, with 320 gigs I can keep every demo that's fun enough to play the demo every other month - but not enough to buy the game. Might actually save me money long term. I can also make a big partition for linux, I was thinking of reinstalling anyway with YDL 6.0 for PS3 coming out. With wifi and sixaxis support in linux and some kinks worked out, I might use it more often - mainly with NES, SNES, SEGA and N64 emulators in mind - with my launch PS3 having 100% PS2/PS1, my Wii having gamecube and my 360 having Xbox 1 BC, I would be pretty much covered to play any major system ever from my 3 systems. That's all sort of in the thought process juggling around. I'm assuming that YDL 6.0 will unlock enough power for N64, I dunno if 5.0 had it down correctly.

I just went to Costco and bought a 250GB Western Digital Passport external drive for ~$120. I ran my fingernail around the case, popped the drive out, put it in the PS3, put the old 60GB drive into the WD case, formatted the 60, and it is now my external with all my MP3's on it.

Some say going with a higher RPM will give you a slight boost in performance but most say if it does it isn't noticeable. The only potential bad things from a higher RPM drive is more heat but I honestly have never heard anyone say the PS3 overheated from a 7200rpm drive.

I really haven't kept up with the Linux ability of the system but I do know that originally you could only dedicate 10GB to either the PS3 or Linux when you partitioned the drive and dual boot. Throwing a 320GB hard drive into the PS3, you may still only be able to dedicate 10GB to Linux. Just something to look into.

Also be aware that for some reason the PS3 OS footprint gets bigger as the hard drive increases in size. My 250GB hdd was only recognized as 232GB due to the different definition of what a GB is (1024MB or 1000MB). Once I just had the basic PS3 OS on the drive I was at 205/232GB. Once I restored all all my videos, demos, etc I was down to ~191GB. Just be prepared to see a smaller number than you might otherwise expect to see.

That's actually a pretty good idea, although I was thinking of taking the ps3's hard drive and stick it in my old laptop that only has 30 gigs, and then trying to stick linux on it.

Gonna bump this for assistance as this is a little related.
Recently i bought a 250GB Western Digital and upgraded into the PS3
After doing a quick format; i already used up 17GB... and after I restore, I used 30GB....
Before I upgraded the hard disk, I only used like 14GB.

Was I suppose to do a Full Format
That will erase the OS no?

Nope. It is "normal" but crazy.

Yeah, it would. It appears to be the first 500GB lappy hdd that is actually the standard thickness.
