Beta Begins! Feb 25th 2013

You weren't kidding when you told us about your experience with Alpha and 1.0. This game is worlds apart from the original FFXIV and it is so goddamn refreshing that the lore of the world actually looks like a Final Fantasy title now.

Aye, I'm glad someone is able to understand how I felt when I played it. I was like, "Finally, a FF MMORPG that feels like FF and isn't FFXI." I've been ready to move on from XI for a while now, without having second thoughts, and now that wont be a problem.

I'm on Tonberry, it was either that or Bahamut when I created my character and I prefer the more "nifty" to the "badass" characters/themes, etc. That said, I'm not sure how much time I'll be giving this portion of the beta. I should have the new Senran Kagura in my hands in a few days, then Soul Sacrifice... and then I'm starting MH3U with my U.S. games onry pals, so I'm pretty content with just waiting until they restore characters. The way I see it, I already know I love the game, no sense in spending too much more time in a wipe out period. Than again, I may rush my conjurer up after a nap for dungeons, that shit was a lot of fun.

I was on Bahamut, then they restricted the log ins and I logged out to reset my connection...and couldn't get back on so I took a nap. When I logged back in, My character was wiped so I made another on Coeurl.
It truly does feel like a more improved XI, yet at the same time, Not like XI at all. Even then, It is much much better than I thought it would be. Lots will change between beta and retail for sure, I would think they would tone down the F.A.T.E. pops because I was seeing them every 5 minutes, We most likely will not start a battle with max TP either.
I never mentioned it, But I love the subtle pointing feature for being able to tell where Hate is being placed, How when a Mob changes hate to someone else, that little stream line comes out of the mob and flows into pointing at who its focus is on. That is a beautiful feature!
I didn't think I would like jumping, But I will not lie...being able to take short cuts instead of running around a path because there is a small ledge or a fence in the way is nice. 1.0 let you drop off of most ledges, but when they were just slightly too high, you still had to walk around them. Now just jump...and if its too high, take some fall damage. I'm cool with that!
No more Anima...awesome!
Levequests as an optional form of leveling, Can't even unlock it till level 10 is good for me. The hunters log is a NICE add on to basic grinding for those added XP bonuses!
And yes, Finally a freaking Auction house that pulls from ALL THREE CITIES! I haven't obtained a retainer yet, So I did not find out if you still have to put your wares into your retainer for it to show up in the Market Board or if you can just do it from the board (didn't see an option to sell, but also didn't see anything for sale so It probly isn't unlocked in this phase yet)

The problem with the F.A.T.E.s isn't their number of occurrences, it's that they're tacked on to the game as an afterthought. GW2 suffers in that it was built around them; so it's a sort of damned if you do sort of system (minus the damned if you don't because no one would be damned for not doing it). Someone is going to have to invent an idea or process to get this new system (as it pertains to MMORPGS) "right." GW2, again, didn't do it, and I don't think XIV will do it, but they're trying and that's something.

As for the frequency, that's kind of their point, to create a steady stream of events for players to participate in, especially together. The problem with them in XIV is that there are just better system to do it, if they're not going to have any sort of effect on things and have seemingly little connection to anything. I personally prefer the idea of having leves for these type of events, leves that are repeatable and with no cap, just maybe a a cooldown timer. F.A.T.E.s just seem out of place in XIV, like they are trying to hard to pack in one more similarity to another game.

Yoshi-P stated in his latest message that the FATES were sped up to the maximum in order to test the lag. They won't be that come launch.

That pretty much confirms my fears with their take on the system then. I thought they would reduce the amount of major ones and instead use others to build up to them, like the ones in GW2 where you do something and it snowballs into something else, and then a big ol' boss boss to cap it off, a stream of events. I thought, for some reason, they were just doing -some- of the events instead of -all- of the events at a sped up pace... that's a bit disheartening, but at least the game isn't built around them so it hardly matters.

I agree with you. Because this isn't a central point to the game and characters progression, a slower pace should be fine as long as its not too slow. Enough bitching from the community would just speed it up in a future patch anyway. Not like we need them to exp off of with everything that's offered.

Yoshi-P stated that major updates would happen every 3 months with an expansion out within 2 years from launch. 2 years sounds like a stretch, but judging from the content that came out with FFXI every 3 months was it? It should be fine. In the first major patch 3 months after launch we are expected to see Housing, Chocobo Raising, and the Golden Saucer among other things. It seems they are getting the core content done at launch and then adding all the extra side stuff a bit later which makes me worried for the reviews from developers. Those extra features will help distinguish FFXIV:ARR from other MMO's, and I'm terrified that some reviewer on a mainstream gaming site will call out ARR on not having any originality when they review it at launch.

FATE was toned down for sure during this beta session. I saw 2 of them the entire time I was online, I was not constantly looking for them, but the times I pulled up the map, they were not all over the place like before. I only participated in one, as when I saw it on the map, I ran for it and joined in. Besides that, I don't mind it if this is the speed that they occur. Works well.
I don't know what it is about Levequets this time around, But they feel more enjoyable. Maybe because it is the fact it is optional this time since besides that they are not much different now, the only change I see if that you do not get the rewards right on the spot and you have to turn it in like any other quest, but you can just do all of them, and turn them all in at once. Not sure what it is really, but I found myself enjoying them a bit more than 1.0.

Levequests are great now. Not to annoying or much of a hassle. However, I must disagree with you on the FATES. They serve as a great bridge between finishing a quest and completion of a level. I think they're pretty much turned off right now because they're bugged to shit and many of them aren't giving EXP, but even so, they need to find a happy medium between where things are now and where they were last weekend.

Heh, my computer is so outdated... I put settings on Medium with the 1920x1200 and only scored a 2106 lol

As long as you didn't experience any stuttering you should be ok. This time around the scores will improve with a better graphics card. (in FFXI I believe it was more CPU intensive...didn't matter much if you had a higher end graphics card)

I am only getting around 4550 mark on Maximum test with resolution 1920x1080, Medium settings only gave an improvement of around 500-600?

My specs are:
i7 2600k
32GB RAM
SSD
GPU: AMD Radeon 6870 (6800 series)

There's a whole thread over at the bgforums with benchmark results and people posting up their PC specs. Users with higher end graphic cards generally were scoring much higher.

I'm still using a ATI Radeon HD 4600 series...

And I'm still back in the Quad core era, 2.66Ghz lol

The Intel Core series should still be good. If you were looking to upgrade I would recommend putting it towards a better graphics card. Because if you ever upgrade your PC at least you can keep your GPU.

For around $150 price range
AMD 7850/7870 will probably score you around high 4,000 lower 5,000 at Max settings @ 1920x1080.

The $200 price range will probably push you into the 6,000 range (from looking at the results on bgforums...based on Nvidia card)

My personal opinion:
I usually go for the $150 range cards (I don't believe in spending more if efficiency is not there for a graphics card)

To further press on what Voltorb said; you're going to be hard pressed to find anything that fully utilizes a quad core right now even. It's beginning to -try- to happen, and in XIV 1.0's case, mistakenly happen (mostly due to under utilizing), but an i5 (assuming that's what you're using) is still a good CPU for a non-enthusiast build. As for GPU's, you can't beat a Nvidia GTX 560ti for the money. I can't vouch for the GTX 660ti (which should cost around the same), but based on the reception it seems silly to buy a 560ti anymore unless they have been deep discounted. Just whatever you do get, since you're going to be playing MMORPGs, make sure it has 2GB of memory.

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, Q9400 2.66GHz

Pretty sure that came out before any of what you are talking about came out lol I've been meaning to upgrade the entire system. I don't really know much about putting hardware together, so I just have them put it together for me.

Been looking at systems, I don't play too many games so not looking for anything very intense. Thoughts?

i5-3570K Processor (4x 3.40GHz/6MB L3 Cache) - Intel Core i5-3570K )
8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti - 2GB

I think you should just get a graphics card and throw it in your current system. Depending on what power supply you have you may need to upgrade that too, but again it depends.

*shrug* I think I'd rather upgrade the entire system. Maybe it will get me back into games after having an ex-g/f beat gaming out of me -.- lol I think I really just want something shiny and new ^^;

Didn't you just start playing FFXI again? How is that going?

I played for a few weeks, but never saw a single person I knew. Leveled up a few jobs to 20 but just ended up not feeling like going on.
