Well i thought about this pretty hard and i figure maybe some of you can really help me. I found out my mother has this disease in the worst way possible.
Well the past couple days my mother has been despressed/stressed very emotional. Wednesday night was probably the only night in which her behavior was very strange. She went to sleep early, maybe 6 pm, and would keep waking up an hour or 2 into her sleep and troll around the house. (She's a smoker) she then told me she was going to go buy cigarettes (She never tells/talks about her habit) at like 10 at night (Also strange). Comes back, goes to bed, wakes up cries a bit, sleeps again and wakes up at 1 to go smoke. My dad has been working over nighters part time for the holidays and its clear that my mother misses him very much, perhaps this is what triggered this. (However he took the same job last year and none of this occurred).
Anyway, some of my uncles (her brothers) came over to calm her down and everyone just slept it off.
Now, last night.
I get home at 2, went out to the bar with a couple friends then watched a movie. My mother is in the living room just standing, (My brother in his room, oblivious to what was happening) she then turns around and stares at me. I started to worry and i asked her repeatedly if something was wrong, that it was ok if she told me. She would stare blankly and then say shes fine. After a while she said shes not fine and i hugged her. She then slouched over as if she fainted standing up, i held her up and sat her on the couch and she rolled her head back, and her eyes starting flickering. She wouldnt respond to me or my brother, so i called 911.
The paramedics came and did what they had to do, my mother continued to be non responsive, but sort of like "woke up" and would go back to sleep a couple times. She is also a diabetic and her blood sugar was 385, (80-120 -being the normal for a non - diabetic). On that alone, she would need to be taken to the hospital, however it is obvious this was not her Diabetes doing this.
Now, up until this point, me and my brother were kept in the dark about her Bi-Polar disorder, she did not want us to know out of pride, which is understandable i guess. My uncle then called me, right before the paramedics took her and told me to tell them she's bipolar. I told them, and then i became furious.
Anyway, we spent the night at the hospital, she was released and is physically better, still acting pretty strange, so i'm still concerned. I promised to not tell anyone that my uncle told me, but she ended up finally telling us herself anyway.
Anyway, the point of this thread is, if anyone here knows how i should deal with someone with this disease. What can i do to help, and how do i know if i have it?
As far as my understanding of the disease goes, people with bi-polar disorder dont have enough lithium (sp). The 2 polars being either very angry, or very sad/emotional. After learning about her condition alot of things began to make sense in the way she acts. I was just worried on how should i deal with this, and i think ive shown some flashes that might be consistent with the condition, how do i know if i may have it as well?
