Released in 1988, the original Bionic Commando introduced a novel grappling-hook mechanic into a stagnating side-scrolling 2D platformer genre. While the Capcom-developed game was highly regarded (and even named as one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time), the franchise has been dormant outside of a 1992 Game Boy version and a 1999 Game Boy Color pseudo-sequel.

That's about to change, as Capcom has revealed to GameSpot that it is developing a new Bionic Commando game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Simply called Bionic Commando, the new game will bring back the original game's hook (pun intended), with players able to use the main character's bionic grappling arm not only to navigate levels but to take out enemies at close range, rappel down sheer surfaces, or toss objects (like cars) at enemies.

Don't try this at home.

Where the original Bionic Commando followed players on a mission to rescue a fellow agent named Super Joe, the new game's storyline appears to carry a more cynical edge. After serving his country honorably in conflict with the Imperials, technologically enhanced agent Nathan Spencer is framed for a number of crimes by his superiors and sentenced for execution. Fate intervenes, as an experimental terrorist weapon is detonated in Ascension City on the day Spencer is to be executed. With the city in ruins and Spencer uniquely equipped to handle the many skyscrapers, monorails, and suspended roadways, the government reluctantly turns to its imprisoned bionic commando for help.

Naturally, the grappling hook makes its return.

To help the game live up to its pedigree, Capcom has made development of the game an international affair. An American producer, a Japanese creative advisor, and Stockholm, Sweden-based studio GRIN will be collaborating on the project. GRIN's most recent projects have included the PC conversions of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and its sequel.

This is awesome!!!! especially with the ORIGINAL bionic commando coming to arcade soon, we finally get a new way to play it on next gen after all these many years!!! i loved this game in my NES days!

But the real question is, will Hitler be the antagonist again?! I still remember how watching Hitler's face explode haunted my dreams in my youth.

This is one of the few games that can draw me away from Halo. I've taken a few XP penalities because i didn't want to tdeal with a team when i could have been playing this game.

No Hitler in this one, but it should still be interesting. I'm surprised they chose this for the remake machine; they haven't done squat with the franchise except for the Game Boy version and the GBA port of the NES version.

Still, the NES Bionic Commando is in my top ten list of Games I Will Not Live Without, so I'm curious to see how it goes.

Bionic Commando was easily one of my top games as a kiddo. I hope this goes well, reallllllly well.

How about Destiny of an Emperor? If the 360 remade that game... ohh man that could be SICK. I still remember all the main character's chinese names to this day lol.

I like how it has the right amount of detail so it's easy to spot objects to grapple onto, and it still looks decient.

XboxLive has the trailer up for download for those who want to watch it on something other than a monitor. (Man this looks pretty on 50 inches.)
DEFINATELY a game to buy full price. ^^; On the subject of Hitler by the way, Operation Darkness looks pretty cool. Don't want to deviate from the topic, but just wanted to add that.

p.s. Steve Blum ftw

i started to cry just a little bit when i watched that...seriously...i think im gonna go cry my happy tears now

That's the most beautiful thing I've seen since the first ff4ds trailers. *wipes away a tear of joy*

Mega bump.

Has anyone else played this yet? I just finished it tonight and though it took a few hours to grow on me, I hated it for the first hour or two, I'm probably gonna buy it. Gameplay wise it's one of the best TPS I've played since Lost Planet, though the story and dialog is utter crap. It's a really fun game though once you get the hang of all the moves and the further you get the better it gets. The graphics aren't great at all, on the 360 version at least, and the first two hours are littered with screen tearin' but after you hit the caverns, for some reason, it stops or is so unnoticeable it doesn't stick out at all.

As far as multiplayer goes, I think it's ultimately what won me over on the game. After the first couple of hours of single player I was repulsed by it and jumped into multiplayer which, to my surprise, is full of win. I've logged a few hours in multiplayer and have yet to experience any lag, which is amazin' considerin' it's a Capcom game. I wished it was more like the single player where you have to upgrade yourself via completin' challenges but it's nothin' more than kill or be killed. Simple but at the same time just what I was lookin' for. People swingin' around will kind of annoy you at first but once you get your aim down it's just like any other game. If I had to describe it I'd say it's like CoD 4, considerin' the damage you can take (though you have a hair bit more HP and can find armor), and UT3, given consideration to your moves and ability to escape/move-in.

Anyway, hadn't seen anyone mention this so I figured I'd let you guys know it's awesome.

well then if it took a couple hours to grow on you i might need to give it another chance, because personally i was so disgusted with it i couldnt make myself play it anymore.
The main character is just so annoying, And the swinging is kinds hit and miss.

I dont know, Its just im such a big BC fan that this game really ruined it for me.

Some of the reviews I've read have pointed out the early part of the game is weaker, but that it really picks up later one when you have more moves at your disposal. I haven't played it yet; I'm still debating if I should buy this or Infamous first.

I wanted this game badly.. Then i found out there is no mission replay feature. Its just something i can not live without. I may just rent it.
