Bioshock

Of course it was cause MS that they did it, but it's a bad trend to allow a game to enforce a specific piece of hardware. I am not buying a fucking Xbox controller for 1 game when I can plug a perfectly good six-axis controller in and use that. (I found a way around the restriction by the way: Pinnacle.)

So I got my PC rig up and running and tried out Bioshock. It's a good game, no complaints. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if it wasn't so hyped. I was expecting something to blow my mind completely.
Maybe that's what made it so good for me. I heard about it for the first time on Thursday, the day after the demo was released, and bought it on Tuesday. By Saturday I was creaming myself over how unbelievable it was.

FPS's are undoubtedly my favorite genre and this one is in my top 3 of all time. It's a tough mash between Bioshock, HL2, and System Shock 2. Bioshock definitely brought the feel of System Shock back into my blood so it likely got some bias points there.

But 10 hours... I took a bit of extra time to explore around and such but it still took me 25 hours from intro to credits.

Also I must say the graphics aren't all that. My PC rig with DVI out into my TV via HDMI with an expensive new video card... nothing special compared to an average PS3 game.
?!

What res? I've played Gears of War on my monitor via component input, and that was breathtaking. Bioshock was a step above that. I was running the game without AA (wouldn't let me enable it for some reason) and I still think it's some of the best rendering I've ever seen.

Why would you just rush through a game you paid $60 for in 10 hours. Slow down an take your time, explore a bit. This isn't a race take your time and enjoy the story because that is what really makes this game interesting.

Yeah and the overhype thing I can understand. Unfortunately games never live up to their hype.

There is no PS3 game with the visuals of Bioshock man. If there was i would own it lol.

1920 by 1080, max settings, with specific nvidia drivers designed with Bioshock in mind. My PC ate the game up like it was solitaire. As in, no slowdown or frame rate drops ever on these settings.

Here's some screenshot: Flickr won't seem to keep them in their top resolution, if you know a site that'll take photos at high resolution tell me and I'll upload them there for ya'll.

Now on the very same TV I play my PS3 and Wii, and I'd like to screenshot a few games for comparison purposes, but I don't really have a method to screenshot a ps3 game. Am thinking of getting a video input to my PC tho for recording warhawk videos. I'll just say I played Bioshock after GRAW 2 so maybe you can see where I'm coming from.

By no means is it a bad looking game. It's really nice artwork it just doesn't scale as well to bigger screens as some other games I've played on my PS3. On a 19 inch monitor it'd probably look perfect but it doesn't scale up as well as I'd like.

Wow, the thing about PC version widescreen format being shitty is true. Cropping the same 4:3 image instead of expanding is retarded.

Guys, it's official, Fire really is totally off his rocker. You heard it here first.

Been having trouble with the controls. I haven't played a game with keyboard and mouse since Doom 3. As I said just recently got a program to let me use my ps3 controller for the game. Since then I haven't really had time to play.

As for the graphics, well you see what I see. The artwork's really nice but if you could see the huge screen I'm looking at then you'd also see it being somewhat pixelated because it didn't seem like the engine was built with big screens in mind. I'd say in short that the artwork is great but something about the code marginalizes it. I am gonna check if I can find another site that'll host my bigger screens.

By the way Skaw, it's not just the PC version, they do the same to the 360 version. At least visually the PC version wins.

I am on 65 inches and i do not see one thing you are talking about. The game looks great. And seriously when we as gamers must go to this type of stuff... I mean wtf... Finaly a game with great visuals, gameplay and story... FINALY. What is it, the first game of this gen that no one can say bad about... Yet people have come to complaining its a cropped game. Fire i understand you, and people have proved i believe that it is not "True" widescreen. But who the faak cares man. Enjoy the game bud.

I'm saying it's an overall really good game, just pointing out what about it bugs me. The cropped I can live with, but I think they should really let any controller work by default. I'm surprised no other PC gamers complain about that, but I guess the majority of PC gamers couldn't give less of a shit about a gamepad.

I probably would agree with you on controller situation if i had the issue. I already have the 360 controllers. I understand ya there Fire. Pc guys probably didnt complain because they are playing with mouse/kb. Alot of them cry over how great it is so i am guessing they would not dare touch a controller lol. I own a sick PC and i use 360 controller, i refuse to use Kb/mouse. Just me :p

Well keyboard and mouse is killing me like the wiimote killed me in my dorm last semester. My TV is not on my desk. It's on the far wall in the center on top of a dresser. I wanted to put it in a position where me and my roomate could both watch blu-rays from our beds. Stuck a comfy chair in front of it too to sit when I'm playing PS3. if I want to get closer. Now I've got a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can sit and type everywhere but for gaming you need a hard surface that's centered facing the screen where the keyboard and mouse are lined up. I can't aim with my mouse on my leg nor can I play on my desk with my head craned to the right.

So a gamepad is really important for me.

Odd that this stuff irritates me, the pixelation and the gamepad, while the widescreen doesn't bother me and I could care less about the lack of multiplayer - the usual complains.

Those are... unnatural. Even without AA enabled my X1900XTX shows no jaggies like that. Especially on the main menu - the Bioshock emblem is absolutely perfect, smooth as a vectored piece. I run at 1920x1200 so resolution is not much difference between us.

I'm running older drivers to boot - Cat7.6 I think. Not sure if newer ones optimize for Bioshock. On Vista so DX10 but that shouldn't affect anything since my card is only DX9.

This is what I get for browsing with img's turned off... edited both of those board-breaker posts to URL them and I think I got the smaller ones from Flickr.

Got some pics to compare Fire. They do look awfully the same. I was dead wrong about the main menu - my emblem too shows some laziness on the edges. The emblem in the intro video though, with the water pouring off it and the lightsource spinning around, that one was clear. Likely the same on yours.

It looks to me like something is capping Fire's texture resolution.

There's new downloadable content available today over Xbox Live. Via Joystiq:

The title update includes some small fixes and one big one: A new widescreen FOV, the answer to some specific, antiquated prayers. The new content (just in time to refresh the memories of Game of the Year list makers) includes a plasmid pack (Machine Buster 1 & 2, Vending Expert 1 & 2, Sonic Boom 1 & 2, EVE Saver), the option to disable Vita-Chambers and a new, 100-point achievement called "Brass Balls." To get it, you'll just need to beat the game on hard without using a Vita-Chamber. No problem, right?

Sounds insane. I've been looking for a good excuse to start playing this again, but I think this may be beyond my gaming powers.
