So today was black friday, the day where people forget about common decency and will do anything for material things. I happened to be out shopping this morning at my place of work at 5 am with my kids and their mom. I saw people fighting over toys and bum rushing products as workers brought them to the floor and watching as like piranha they cleared every pallet in mere seconds, pulling hair, pulling arms, shoving, pushing...my daughter was scared to see this stuff happening, im just calmly shopping. Guess it coulda been worse after what ive heard about other places.

PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) -- A shooting inside a Toys "R" Us on the busiest shopping day of the year killed two people, authorities said.

The violence erupted on Black Friday, the traditional post-Thanksgiving start of the holiday shopping surge, but accounts of what occurred inside the store were fragmentary or second hand and it was not clear whether it involved any shopping frenzy.

The Palm Desert Police Department received calls of shots fired around 11:35 a.m., Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said. He said officers were still investigating what prompted the gunshots.

Immediately after the shooting, about 20 people rushed into the World Gym across the street from Toys "R" Us, the gym's assistant manager Glenn Splain told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

"They were crying, tearing and shaking," Splain said, adding that one woman came in cradling a baby.

"Some people got into a fight," said Splain, who spoke with some of the customers. "One of the guys here thought it was over a toy, but it got louder and louder and then there were gunshots."

Sarah Pacia of Cathedral City told The Desert Sun newspaper she was in the store with her two boys, ages 4 and 6, looking at coloring books when she heard a commotion in the next aisle. She thought it was people rushing to get a sale item. Then she heard three or four shots.

She said she froze, and store employees calmly escorted her out of the store.

"This is Toys "R" Us. There are kids shopping in there," Pacia said. Her son Jayden, 4, was clinging to her leg. He told her he didn't want to die, she said.

Toys "R" Us officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Palm Desert is about 120 miles east of Los Angeles.

sick shit eh?

Thats some crazy shit. The funny thing, is that Palm Springs/Deserts (Desert Cities) is an area where rich people generally live at. Kinda surprising to hear that people were shot to death, and in a Toys'r'Us too. And if it was over some damn toys, thats just sad.

I don't even dare to go out on Black Friday. People are too crazy. Also, I simply just do all my Christmas shopping online so I don't have to deal with the huge crowds around the holiday time.

Canada's "Black Friday" is Boxing Day, December 26th (we do ours the day after Christmas, not Thanksgiving). This cuts down on the mayhem because people usually don't think about shopping for Christmas the day after Christmas... Retailers also got a bit smarter and started "Boxing Week" sales to cut down on people going nuts.

yeah no joke! I stayed home on purpose even though I need sugar in a bad way lol I just put my Christmas tree up instead.

That first death at the Walmart happened just a few minutes away from me. My parents were talking about it today....how the fuck do you just trample over someone just to get cheap goods?

one reason why i dont go shop on black friday anymore

People that do things like this seriously piss me off..

I worked today from 12-10 and I have to say it was one of the best days I've ever worked in retail. Of course every days a party at best buy but its just a fun atmosphere with so many people there. Then again I didn't have to work for the crazy door buster shit so that was nice. Nothing crazy went down at my store as far as I know, however someone did faint last year.

This is just...

sad...

Trailer parks and soccer moms, prove me wrong

However Mire, we have started our own "black friday". It was all over the news. Canadian Tire, Walmart etc.

In the states though aren't the stores doing a 24 hour thing?

People are friggin nuts.

This is why I never shop on the busiest days of the year. Even in England, just in case ¬_¬

Most places offer these sales online now, don't see the point of going, especially since people are fucking vultures at these things. I did go to Best Buy though, and it was actually tame.

Yeah buddy. I live in a college town so we have some of the biggest, meanest, scariest looking dudes watching our doors. We also only let 20+ people in at a time. Cuts down on the rush. We only had one incident with a lady trying to cut in line. Our GM just immediately kicked her out of the store and the crowd cheered. It was pretty funny.

We also had an FBI agent there on black friday. He was investigating some people who tried to steal our prepaid phones and threatened to bomb the place and said they were working for Osama. Now *THAT* was scary.

Oh yeah we had cops in our store for the morning rush, by the time I got there though at noon most of the lines were gone or pretty short, aside from the checkout line. We also can only sell like 2 pre paids per customer (national law i think?) so I had a couple people who were disappointed but nothing like I'LL BLOW YOU UP. Luckily I work specifically in mobile though so even though it was busy, it wasn't ever crazy.
