Blau Dolch vs Trial of the Magians

Pretty much what Nyosan said, why in the hell did you even bother posting this thread? The latent effects for the weapons of that family line (Blau, Onimaru, Maneater, etc) are some of the simplest to trigger, and are really no brainers, yet you insist and calling them junk, and you are actually pretty rude about it.............I wont black list you myself, since misguided people like yourself tend to like to spread your misguided information. Please refrain from posting any more "question" threads without thinking through what youre actually expecting out of them.

JRS anyone?

took me awhile to figure that one out lol but blau has dropped a lot at 670kish may buy one for rdm

but serious question for someone that wants to learn really just a ws question, do many people get exactly 100tp then ws? thats the only thing that bothers me, occasionally on blu(yes i know its a different job but i'm trying to understand) i normally dont get 100tp so when i get a say perdu hanger, due to the inconsistency of tp gain it'd be better to switch off the normal offhand weapon to main and blau to offhand correct? Once again I'm not saying flatout offhand blau and use something gimp but if you had a waepon thats 32 base hypothetically and blau's off isnt that better for consistency? Because perfect world scenario yes you'd probrably switch to ws gear when you're a hit or two from 100(assuming you dont go over) then prep your buffs then ws.

i'm asking because i may have the problem in the future when i get a perdu and i have something like a fragrach or hopeful koggelmander and instead of perdu/frag/koggel i want to switch them.

and is there a damage difference between the main weapon and the offhand weapon? i suppose if there is then it'd be even better for the latent weapon to be mainhanded for increase DoT, I really dont know.

thanks!

For straight TPing, it doesn't matter if the main hand has the higher or lower damage weapon. There's no special bonus to either hand while TPing; you're still TPing with a DMG:26 weapon and a DMG:w/e weapon.

Since the increased DMG is active during WS on these weapons, there's really no reason to ever off-hand them, unless you've got a weapon that has a higher DMG than the latent DMG.

The only time I put something other than Blau in the main hand is when I'm evasion tanking something; Ermine's Tail (DMG:34) goes in the main hand, and Blau (DMG: 33 with latent) goes in the off-hand. Once I finish some of the other Magian trials I'm doing, I'll probably upgrade the AGI/Evasion dagger as well. AGI+4/Evasion+12 is just too sexy. :sexy:

P.S.:
Spoiler:
There is some debate as to whether the augmented DMG (including latent DMG) factors into Weapon Rank. If it uses only the base damage, there may be a few select cases where one may want to go with a slightly lower base DMG, if the Weapon Rank is a tier higher for the weapon with the lower total DMG. This would be an atypical situation, though.

TL;DR: Higher damage in the main hand, lower damage in the off-hand. Placement matters for WS, but not for TPing.

that clears up some things thanks for the post, but something i cant get a straigh answer on, your spoiler hits on it somewhat

for consistency due to tp gain not being 100 nearly all of the time, using a latent weapon with 33 base and 32 normal base dmg. I'd switch to 32main and offhand 33 latent because of irregular tp gains (rajas in ws and chiv)

but perfect world scenario and with no STP most likely then I can see you point, but onehanders can reach a point to where they can tp in rajas but this would affect the tp gain and could cause irregular tp reaching of 101tp, etc.

give you my example with bluemage, I dont tp in rajas, I probrably could but i like my accuracy a lot even with 8 sword merits but with just chiv chain in tp, I have 10.5 tp gain every two swings with frag/beast slayer ws with rajas of course and that adds 5tp for rajas and +1 for chiv, since normally a good vorpal will put me at 13 or 14 on tp return savage being 12. Tonight I'll use my bluemage and give more accurate numbers I could be off by one on tpgain or .5 but my memory is pretty good on stuff like this.

but long story short you know the point i'm getting at? I'm not saying flat out no to what you're saying, I saying it could be dependent on tp gain and how STP could make it to the point where you are wsing more in 26 DMG more often than 33 as with my own future scenario with Perdu/Koggel or /Frag frag would be slightly easier but you'd lose the +15 attack on the main hits.

For Perdu-style weapons, you are always WSing with the latent active, including the bonus DMG/ACC/ATT. This is regardless of the amount of TP you had before the WS.

Think of it like this: You hit your WS macro. The game takes away your 100%+ TP, leaving you at 0 TP. It then calculates the WS damage, and gives you back the appropriate amount of TP for the number of hits.

Sekkanoki can interfere with this if you end up with 100%+ TP afterward. For BLU and THF, you don't have to worry about it.

to put it bluntly: all latents are junk to me thanks. and the blau is overrated.

You should try not relating the blau latent to overall crappy latents in this game. Unless you are doing a SC there is no reason not to fire off a WS every time you hit 100% TP as a THF. Blau man handles all daggers in DPS except for Mandau, and Mandau is what? 100 million? 200 million gil? Whatever it is. And blau is... 1 million or less. It's even better than the mythic as far as DPS goes. That 178 delay is key, combined with 33 dmg, acc and att, and you get the best dagger in the game aside from the relic. Thanks to a low delay and moderately high dmg Blau is #2. If that delay was considerably higher or if the dmg was considerably lower in latent mode, it would not be #2 and it most certainly would not be worth what it is. SE knew what they were doing when they designed it.

Anywho, depending on how you make money, you would be better off farming to buy a blau or doing the trials. Depends on you, but as others have said if you already made up your mind about Blau then there was no purpose to your thread. Personally I think you wanted us to confirm it was just something for the rich folks to feel good about, and when you realized it was not the typically rich person item you started reacting the way that you did. I'm sorry the truth crashes your belief but, Blau really is worth it's price. It's worth more, really. This isn't an over priced HQ item. The latent might as well not be there, but it is. SE could have just as easily not added the latent, kept the latent stats, and thrown it on a Nidhogg or a KB or an even lower drop rate on the ENM battles and it'd be worth 5 times what it is at the very least because of several reasons. I rather take it as is and fire off a WS every 100% TP personally because that's how life already is for me. So as far as I am concerned the Blau stats are 33 dmg 178 delay acc and att full time. I never give it a chance to be used at 25 base DMG.

If you are "bad" about not getting WSs off as soon as you can then yes, you are right to be turned off and Blau is not the dagger for you by a long shot. The trials dagger will better serve you and spare you the hassle of having to pay attention to TP bar as to not waste several seconds with 25 dmg and no extra stats. But in all the ways that matter, Blau stats do come out as 33 dmg 178 delay acc 5 and att 16. If you're going to judge it as not worthy of it's AH price, judge it by what it is 99% of the time, not by 1% of the time. Most people judge it by it's 99% of the time stats and that is why it is worth what it is worth. The alternative is doing Dynamis and making 150 million gil to buy a Mandau, or killing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of mobs during weather for the trials. I hear that sucks more than anything else in the game.

I'm assuming you think a Hagun is worthless too, yet that is also over the million mark...

ok, wow i didnt know it worked like that, latent effects really confused me...thanks!!!

I agree that Blau is a really nifty and great dagger and that the OP is clueless and naive. It's a simple and direct latent, you don't even have to consider it a latent if the word "latent" steers you away from the item since the effect will take place at least 90% of the time you're using the weapon. If you really refuses to buy this knife until it reaches 100k though, then that's his issue, otherwise I'm thinking that he dislikes Blau because he cannot afford it.

Anyway, as for me. I do not have very much gil to my name atm (aprrox. 900k) I just reached 75 thief 2-3 weeks ago and have been using Azoth and Jambiya for now. The other night I augmented my fane baselard with triple attack, some dmg and subtle blow, but I'm planning to augment another one in the meantime.

I do plan on purchasing a Blau possibly soon though but I'm waiting until after the update or to see how low prices will go for the dagger since I have been monitoring the price and it is going down a lot.

I have a question about fane baselard though. Since I augmented one and in the process of augmenting one, do you guys think it's a decent dagger to use, even one of them? Also, if I do augment another one, what do you suggest my minimum augments be on it before accepting? I was thinking some acc+, dmg+ and triple attack, I was also thinking acc+, triple attack and additional effects would be nice too.

You've pretty much got it. As much ACC, DMG, and Triple Attack as you can get. I'll typically pick up the Sidhe weapon if the augments it has are better than those on the weapon I currently have. It at least keeps one moving forward, rather than awaiting that 'perfect' weapon that his highly unlikely.
