Yesterday I had off work the entire day which was super cool. So after pestering Shyrra on AIM and whatnot, I decided to drive up to the town I go to college at and visit my girlfriend for the rest of the day.

Well, on the way there I was merrily rocking out to Fall Out Boy (yes, I know, emo) and suddenly a puff of white smoke shoots out in front of my car. My car didn’t do anything weird – not even missing a beat. So I figured it was the car ahead of me or just a regular dust cloud. There was no smell, it felt as if nothing was wrong.

Well the day went by and it was around 1am when I decided to go home. I start up my car and head to the stoplight on her road when.... I don’t stop. Thank god the light turned green because I just kept coasting into the light. I slow to a crawl and pump my brakes a couple of times until it finally stops.

I’m thinking “oh shit, oh shit.” I’ve got work at 8am tomorrow morning and I need to make it home now. I call my dad and he says there’s no way I could do anything this late at night, so it was either drive home and get my moms car for work tomorrow or spend the night up there. Well, I’m a bit strapped for cash and looking at getting a new car so I needed the 9 hour shift I have today (which, incidentally, I’m writing this during).

I decided to wing it, much like I do everything else in my life. Thank GOD I made it home alright, but it was seriously the scariest drive home. I had to go a constant 45mph on a highway, and anytime someone got behind me I had to slow to a crawl to force them to pass, and I had to keep a very, very, very safe distance from anyone in front of me in case my brakes really went out and prevented me from slowing down.

Sorry, I just had to share. It was a really scary experience. I finally made it home and probably screwed up my car even more so by just putting it in park as it was still moving. I have the whole weekend off work so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but people were depending on me for rides and now I can’t give them that. I’m really pissed at myself because I should’ve gone shopping for a new car instead of running up to see my girlfriend (I’ve been planning on getting a new car for a while). Bleh, now it may not be fixed until Monday.

Just a sucky day. D:

Man I was listening to my sub on the busiest road in the city when my alternator decides to go out, needless to say the car is off, im coasting @ 45, and theres a red light in front of me. I tap the brakes to stop, and they dont engage. At this point, i decide to cut to the right, cutting off a police officer, and pop a curb into a circle K, where I decide to rip the emergency brake, leaving me with my head in the steering wheel and the car stopped (thank god).

The cop comes over, yells at me, I explain my situation, and he gives me a ride home.

Fucking alternator /sigh

Thats one of the reasons why i'm really happy my uncles and cousins are all into car mechanics and such. I'll have them on speed dial when I get a car... because I can guarantee i'll be freaking if something like that happens.

Anyways, glad to hear you made it home safely. Guess you didn't have any friends with vehicles that could of helped you out though huh?

You don't have a car yet? You must live in a nice big city with plenty of public transport. Out here in the boonies though, we depend on our metal machines. D:

I called a lot of people for a ride or something but no one really picked up their phone. I was this close to calling Eleibfrid because his car his hot shit and I'd love to roll up to work in that. >_>;

In other news, isn't QCDN a ticking time bomb today? With Neolink and Leggomyeggo's threads and that whole BoL thread which is freaking hilarious.. man, totally wasting time at work today. *hits refresh for the upteenth billion time*

I had a car when I turned 18, but... never got around to getting my license, and ended up selling it in the end. Still haven't gotten my license either >_<

And we have decent public transportation... however i'm lucky and have family that doesn't mind giving me a ride as long as I buy them a coffee :)

Don't know if you'll read this but, had Guncle come over and he said its an easy fix, and not that pricey. Just tellin' ya.

Not to be a dick or anything but you didn't think to lay on the mercy brake?

And more importantly, did your brakes seriously go all the way out? Cos if so jesus... that sucks and i sympathize, but better to get a lift from the fuzz than pose a risk like that on the road.

No joke, you can call them for crap like that. Especially in rural areas. I'm glad you came out of it ok but it could've been a horribly bad decision for you, some poor random fuck out there on the road, or both. :/

When in desperation the fuzz is your friend.

Hell man, that sort of thing is why you pay taxes. <.<

mesa agree with RoM... They would certainly have preferred you take a ride with them. =D <3 Aly

Not completely gone, just didn't work quite as well. Apparently I still have full functionality in one brake, just not the other. I could still come to a semi-complete stop.

I didn't call the fuzz because it was a very empty backroad that I was driving on. I think I saw two souls the entire time I was out there, and one was a bunny. >_>;

In retrospect it was a bad idea and I do agree with you. I guess I just wasn't in the right head. I just wanted to get home & get to bed, actually. D:

Wow, be careful next time. >< Seems like you didn't have any option either, and it sounds like your an experienced driver.

I've SO been there. To people that have always had the means to be in a fairly reliable car, or (at the very least) have some form of experience when it comes to auto-repair, I don't know if it's possible to describe what it's like to literally be terrified every time you know you've got to drive somewhere.

I hate the feeling of starting a car, and having to worry about whether or not it's going to get you where you're going ... or better still, back home again. Even if I know the car "should" be healthy again, it only takes one break-down to instill great paranoia in me. Every whine, whirr, bump, or grind, sends me through my skin.

There's little in life I dread so much as slowly coming to the realization that I'm going to have to do something to "fix" my car.

To make matters worse, I can't help but feel that it's extremely easy for mechanics to rip me off. I'm absolutely clueless, and I think it shows ... that's really my main source of stress, nowadays. I'm almost too scared to take a car in for a routine checkup, because I've always got this nagging feeling that they're going to come to me with 1001 things that they TELL me I have to do. I've been burned on this before, and I've got kind of a conditioned response to people in blue overalls, now.

What should have been a $150 tune-up and tire rotation becomes a $900 whatever-the-Hell-they-tell-me, and I leave slightly dazed, and confused.

GUY I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN TRUST OR NOT:

"Yeah, mac ... it looks like your flux capacitor is in need of a quantum temporospatial claudication. The adjustment will require a heliocentric manifold from the sapphic relay."

ME:

"Um .... okay ... I guess .... T_T"

Glad to hear nothing happened to you. Losing your brakes..hell, even losing part of your brakes is a scary fucking thing. You do have some balls driving home with that. And Zhao, stop being a dick and buy your own car. ;p

I didn't have to, he fixed it then gave it to me :D.

Against, let me repeat that, AGAINST my will. Basically, the parental units took it from me and gave it to you.

Anyway, I have a new car now! '02 Oldsmobile Aroura, luxery class. Not the most manly car out there, but damn I have heated leather seats! Who the fuck cares if I'm displaying my masculinity or not! I have temperature control and a light sensor! WAHAHAHA. >>; (pictures incoming RL Stinks thread either later today or tomorrow. It is in need of a good wash).

Leave it at home and maybe for the small price of letting me take her out on a country road, I'll wash it for you.
