ok i recently hit 13 on my BLM.. and its been rather easy so far.. but i do realize it'll get harder very shortly.. because im the type of person to like to be just on the verge of taking hate from the tank.. i'll nuke till if i cast 1 more thing i'll probably take hate from the tank..

so anyhow.. i'd like some tips <,< it'd be very helpful..

so far my filters are set up as follows:
Special action effects on/by you.
Damage you deal to an enemy.
Special action effects on/by foe.

now, my reasons behind having those on are.. so i can see when my debuffs stick.. so i can see how much dmg i deal (to gague my hate), and so i can see when my enemies use special skills..

<,< just thinking about this.. being /whm.. i should probably put on "Special action effects on/by party" so i can see if someone gets poisoned or something.. i'll do that when i get on <,<

but anyhow.. i want to know if these are the only filters i'll really use.. and WHY WOULD I USE other filters? it'd be really helpful..

also.. -ga spell range.. can.. anyone explain to me an easy way to judge this?

bursting is another thing.. ive pretty much only bursted on crabs.. with water (distortion) so.. this would help em out too..

anyhow.. any tips are welcome..

the best way to play is with as few filters as possible... just filter the "other" category stuff, "npc" stuff and if you still have too much spam you can turn off missed attacks and evaded attacks... the reasoning behind this is that being aware of everything happening is importants, know how often and how hard your tank is hitting, what the melee tp is like w/o them spamming their macros, being aware is part of being good.

I completely agree try, filter as little as possible, it is very important to know as much of what's going on without getting spam as possible :P

i would add the party one and none others. i do on my smn so i can see when someone gets poisoned or whatnot. then i can remove it quickly. but other then that your filters r fine.

As a black mage i filter misses that enemies and party makes (and enemies). a few other toos.

For ranging ga spells i suggest only doing it in a camp that is like in a cave or near a zone with few areas. So areas in valkurm i dont suggest using agas till like qufim when your at tower even then its gotta be well set up area. Oh and hate issues become less as time goes on. I barley steal hate when i do a burst and then a 500dmg spell sometimes i do but hate is easly taken back.

Its all about judging. I suggest healing when you feel you took too much hate.

if you dont feel like reading all this text just skip to my recap at the bottom.. mainly just want i want to know.. the text between here and there just gives my explinations for asking those questions..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
yea i rest as much as possible, but i see that as part of being any mage.. so.. whm blm rdm smn i rest alot..
filters wise.. i dont see why i would want to see how much dmg the tank takes? or how much dmg he gives.. why? i mean.. sure its great to be aware of every aspect of the battle..but.. i'd rather concentrate on what im doing to help my party (debuffs and such) and if i had all those party filters on.. i'd scroll my screen too much.. and i'd miss the text saying when my debuffs wear off.. i DO however need the "special action effects on/by party" turned so i can view it.. so i know when to poisona asap or what not.. the rest of those i'd like a bit more indepth info as to why i'd want to see them.. i dont understand..
i havnt gotten my first -ga spell yet.. i will in a couple levels however.. but if someone could like.. give me a few examples such as.. like.. is stonega1 = or less than (or more than) stone2? as far as dmg.. i know (i think?) that -ga spells are the stronger of the BLM's arsenal.. but how much stronger than regular ones? maybe if someone would make a small text chart saying like.. which GA spell is equal dmg to a NON-ga spell of the same element..
and im not sure if "being aware is part of being good" is really entirely accurate.. i do believe you SHOULD be aware of what is your responsability in a party.. like.. RDM should know when their debuffs and buffs wear off.. and when an enemy uses a buff.. and ninjas should be aware of how many shadows they have at all times.. but.. do i need to see how many shadows a nin has as a blm? well maybe once i get stun.. but till then? i dont know.. i try to turn ON as many filters as possible.. while keeping my focus on the areas i view as my job's responsability. as nin i have 2 filters on.. "attacks you evade" and "attacks missed by foes".. helps me concentrate on how many shadows i have up.. and nothing else..
and i was told last night, by a person who claimed to have a 75blm (but was in my valkurm dooms party).. anyhow.. he told me "as a mithra you will want to concentrate more on +MP instead of +INT.. which.. i dont know.. im a little confused on this because i thought more INT meant i got resisted less? im not sure.. not a mage player as previously stated.. but.. so far ive concentrated on +INT since mithra have 2nd best MP.. can someone clear up INT/+MP for me? or any other stats i may want to concentrate on? i dont plan on taking BLM to 75.. only to about 50'ish.. but if i like it, possibly all the way (i tend to like any jobs i play so meh)..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ok so as a recap of this entire msg.. if you skipped all the text.. here is the things i need some explinations on..

1) why would i see EVERYTHING in a battle? do i really need to see that the pld just took 100 dmg?
2) i'd like to know what NON-GA spells are equal to -GA spells of their same element.. it'd be really helpful for judging when to use -ga over non-ga..
3) as a mithra, should i go +INT or +MP? or what is some happy median i can aim for? if say.. i have an item that gives +2INT should i use that over.. say.. +20MP?

thanks for the help ive recieved so far.. hope to keep getting good replies on this subject..

I like to filter all damage except the damage I do and the damage I take, as well as evaded attacks for everything excluding myself.

1. You need to see how much damage your tank is dealing and taking so you can judge hate. He will gain hate with damage given and lose hate with damage taken. Admittedly, if you find yourself having trouble seeing the debuffs wearing and other things, this can be filtered out with minimal loss of information. PLD's in particular aren't that dependent on damage for hate control.

2. You will just have to learn to gauge -ga spell area of effect as you see it cast. It's impossible to describe it since we can have different resolutions and different preferred screen angles.

3. As for damage that -ga spells do in relation to the general single target nukes: rule of thumb is that the -ga spell will do 50% more damage than the same level single target spell of the same type (ie thundaga does 50% more damage than thunder) for about 2.8x's the MP cost. A more relevent comparison is that your best -ga spell at any given level will do about 20-25% more damage than your best single target spell for just under double the cost in MP. If you get the impression that -ga spells aren't that good for most situations, then you get my point. They do have uses, but that's a different discussion.

With ga spells it's better to be safe than sorry. I don't like them. They cost too much mp in comparison to the increase in damage. They run the risk of getting your party wiped. This happenned to me as recently as Boyhada in my low 50's - clipped a bunny and it linked bunnies. Not fun, and I felt like a noob. Now, unless the coast is absolutely clear, I don't mess with AOE spells. You can get a feel for the AOE radius in a newb zone like Saruta. Then when you're in a pt, you'll have the rough idea, and can play it safe if you're in doubt. It's always better to assume the stray mob is in AOE range than to assume you'll be fine. In my experience, I never luck out.

Blah you don't need to see how much damage your tank is doing. After a few rounds of pulling hate you'll get used to how much you can nuke before your on the verge of pulling it.

Seeing as how noone commented on bursting.

At the level you are at now you can wait until you see the skillchain animation before starting to cast. The tier 2 spells is about the same. Tier three spells you need to start just before the last weapon skill goes off. Tier four spells at the start of the last weapon skill.
