Blowing the whistle

So, I'm trying to do the third mini-game of the Sergeant Major Assault quest, and I'm getting my butt kicked. It's the part where you have to blow that stupid whistle at the recruits to make them speed up when they fall behind, and you have to have them all up with you at the end. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on how to complete this? My first try I only had one fall behind, but every time after has left two... I just can't figure this thing out. Thanks.
 
Wait until they fall about 2-3 steps behind, then blow whistle. Towards the end the camera lags a little so you gotta be more on the lookout. It's going to take a few tries unfortunately.

Apparently I was waiting too long on the whistle. This time I blew it earlier and kept em all up and ignored the fact that he said blowing it too much can hurt.
 
It only hurts if you blow it when they're way up in front (you get the little unhappy beep then) - and it's more that they're then progressively unresponsive, the more unhappy beeps you get. Or something like that.

I understood how it worked a little better when I had to endure 9 runs through that horrible little minigame myself, but I've repressed the memories since then. (It's really not all that bad a minigame, what really sucks is waiting an hour to try again. Kinda hard to learn from your mistakes if you have to remember the mistakes from an hour, two hours, three hours, ..., ago.)
 
Congratulations that one made me so angry. I just went away and came back like a LR day later til I beat it.. I actually have Promotion: First Lieutenant flagged.. but I'm not doing it because.. well I hate all these bullshit rank up quests, not to mention no one does assaults anymore outside of a static or Nyzul anyways.
 
On the situps and the second one you could force DC and try again immediately...didn't work on the running one though, made me pissed.
 
I found that i couldn't get it done on my lagged laptop at all.

But when I did it on my PC I had no problem at all.
 
Pro tip: If you fail, fake d/c, and you won't have to wait for the next game day.

Actually, the FL one's kinda fun. (I guess they learned their lesson with the SM one, because the SL and FL rank-up minigames *aren't* stupidly obnoxious.) Especially because:

Heh, nothing short of getting 56,000 IS (to get my item) Or some sadistic torture Mini game where Naja doesn't die from anything but straight pain and shock of seeing her intestines would get me to do that.
 
While I can sympathize with not liking the earlier mini-games, I can't really see bending over backwards to avoid ranking up (and thus avoid getting the boosted sanction duration from ranking up... even if FL assaults, FL IS-buyable items, and the possibility of captain rank are of no interest to you). Ya know, that whole "cut off the nose to spite the face" sort of concept never really made sense to me. XD

It's *really* not a bad rank-up, and it's got plenty of comedy in its cutscenes.
