Like many other players I am excited about the new upcoming jobs, especially Blue Mage, and have tried to think through some of the ups and downs of this new job.

The following was posted by Kolid in another thread on QCDN and is representative of many sources.

Blue Mage
Acquisition of Spells
# Can only get new abilities with Blue Mage as main
# Must Defeat enemy before ability can be learned
# Must be able to get XP from a mob to learn a spell from it
# Can't learn it if you die
# Must be within a certain distance of the monster

Setting Spells
# Must 'Set' a learned spell
# Blue Mage has 'set-up' points, based on level
# Each spell costs a certain number of 'set-up' points
# In addition to 'set-up' points, a maximum number of spells can be set

Acquiring those dreaded special abilities and turning them back on the mobs are the obvious upsides, and the subject of much discussion, but it is my nature to explore how the downsides will shape this new job and its function in party.

1) When Blue Mage was first announced months ago, I noticed the resemblence to Guild Wars "Capture" and some of the downside will be brought with it. Also resembling Guild Wars is the system where abilities taken into the field are limited by total count or value. Result, a Blue Mage seeking party must be interviewed as to what abilities have been acquired, and which will be available to the party. Currently my Red Mage is often the last to leave the Moghouse, as my sub affects my contribution to the party, and what gear I should bring. This will become routine for a Blue Mage.

2) There is a curious relationship between Blue Mage and RMT (Real Money Trading). As a Red Mage, I have been paid astonishing sums of gil (likely from RMT) to power-level. But I (like most of us) have met, and sadly depended on, enough players who have been power-leveled so far beyond their abilities as to be virtually useless, that I have largely cancelled the practice. Because a Blue Mage must be subjected to a special ability, and earn experience, and survive, and be nearby to acquire an new ability, a quality Blue Mage must be carefully crafted. An ability must be acquired when and where it is available. Once an ability falls beneath the level to earn experience it cannot be acquired. A large amount of travel will be involved, to visit areas where the prevailing mobs have the ability you wish to add to your repetoire. Spending an endless supply of gil for gear, scrolls and assistance will not have the same affect on Blue Mage as it has on other jobs in the past, and may have played a role in how Square Enix shaped the new job.

3) Because of the restrictions on building a quality Blue Mage, one wonders if the first high-level Blue Mages will turn out to be the most gimped in the long run. Look for Blue Mage statics that will carefully coordinate their travel, acquisition of skills and leveling with an eye toward building a high quality Blue Mage.

Just some thoughts, we will know a lot more soon (but never soon enough, lol.)

I have a feeling blu/bst will be an ideal setup and the job will be able to solo from 1-75 if you want. So, the acquiring new skills from only EP+ mobs won't be an issue. I also have a feeling most people won't continue to play blu as it'll take a whole hell of a lot of effort to maximize it's potential. You will likely see some lazy blu's with all the crab and pugil abilities.. This game was built around fighting crabs..

There will be a ton of people who will be leveling Blu for 1 simple reason. It looks like it has potential to be an extremely powerful job.

I still say the way BLU sounds with it's "Set" abilities they could run with Mime down the road where you gain Set-Up points as you level to pick and choose your skills as you go from all the skills & jobs you have unlocked previously.

*wishful thinking*

One thing is for sure, I'll be taking the lvling nice and slow, making sure to learn spells :P I've waited forever for BLU, not gonna rush through it.

Yea with BLU you can pretty much play at your own pace.
I like that too. ^_^

Since BLU is fully customizable, likewise, with choosing a sub.
What do you guys/gals think are some good possible subs; and its ups/downs?

Really, if it actually has melee skills that are worthwhile, and a decent sword rating, WAR, NIN, THF sub(s) possibly in pt, alongside the obvious WHM, RDM, and possible BLM sub(s). Too tired to care about downs, so just giving a few ups, WAR, increased melee output, berserk, defender, double attack, NIN, dual wield, shadows, increased melee output, THF, SATA, increased melee output, BLM, conserve MP, warp(!), perhaps MAB affecting BLU spells damage output, WHM, cures(even moreso if BLU doesn't have any cure spells of their own), status cures, divine seal, and RDM, fast cast, cures, etc.

IDK there so many mob abilities that I would like to have I can see everyone lvlin blu super slow. I think thats the first job ppl will completly refuse a plvl or youll rarly see blu fighting anything more than a DC or ing any XP rings.

But on other note the bat abilities kick ass
Bat
EVA down
STR down

Beetles
EVA up

Crabs
All there def spells (bubble curtian halves magic dmg)

limitless how much shit you can do with blu supposely

I worry though because alot of those atks seem ot be AoEs. How would you think that battle togo if all your skill were AoEs. This would make it a pain to learn some skills cuz theres always mob clutered in some areas. Im sure some of there skill wont be AoEs but from what ive seen it would be hard to lvl somewhere with alot of mobs hence making blu more challenging job to learn

Theres gonna be SOOO many shitty blu...

I changed how I felt on this.. I think this job looks really nice now.. Nothing to compare to say, Sam or Nin when they were added.. but Blu. requires a LOT of work!

Something this game sorely lacks in people.. Most are lazy and just OMG 75 GOGO. People will play it for the sake of playing it..
Tiael I look forward to.. He loves this job and has been on about it forever.. I truly believe he will be a good Blu. I'll wait till the hype dies to try the new job, but nonethe less.. This info made the job much better looking.

I agree wholeheartedly with the OP. Blu is going to be a pain in the butt for me to level as I have already made a rather lengthy list of mob abilities I *must* aquire. I am still looking forward to the job and cant wait to start the process. All the ideas that I read about only serve to further excite me about the possibilities. Anyone heard about any abilities we wont be able to learn. Some are obvious - 'Final Sting' would be pretty pointless. Just curious.

Pointless? Lol let BLUs go fake NIN 2hring to bloodwarp as a non-mage subbed BLU!

Needleshot (not 1000 Needles)
Sharp Sting (not Final Sting)
Screwdriver I dont see.. maybe Splashbreath...

Mobs will always have the upperhand I'd assume.. cant overpower it.

In one of the BLU videos from the fanfest, BLU uses 1k needles.

Idk, check several of the other threads from fanfest, a lot of them have links to the videos, but I'll just post a pic of it:
1k.jpg

Edit: After looking at that pic, try IGN for videos :P

Have couple bluemages use 1k needle or throat stab on Gods or HNM = own
lol.

Heh, but knowing SE, when BLU's use it, it can have the option of needles missing, so 999needles miss and 1 hit, go 1 pt damage :P
