I've been browsing many forums feverishly trying to find a solution for the recent log-in and in-game issues I have had relating to the blue screen of death (after the update).
To those who need clarification of the problem:
Your FFXI gives you either a completely blacked out screen, or the BSOD when you log into the game. Sometimes you will be able to get into the game, but as soon as you attempt to zone it will BSOD you and reboot your computer. This has nothing to do with the windower, as it BSOD's you whether you use it or not.
It is NOT a corrupted update, corrupted game, corrupted anything. It has nothing to do with viruses. I have checked EVERYTHING.
Based on browsing through various forums I have come to the conclusion that this problem is isolated to a lot of people using the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 series graphics chip (Most commonly implemented in HP and Compaq laptop models).
I finally fixed the problem last night (we'll see if it continues to work today when I get off work) after doing the following:
1) I attempted to use the omegadrivers downloaded from omegadrivers.net, which seemed to solve the issue as it did for Ziphor who originally posted the information. This only screwed my laptop display up and I had to remove it. However, this may work for you.
2) I uninstalled the ATI drivers completely, and then reloaded an old set of drivers from early 2004. This appears to completely solve any reboot issues that I have had. (The driver files start with Sp2xxxxx.exe where x's are numbers. I found that the Sp3xxxx.exe series of drivers don't do anything for me).
In addition (this may be isolated just to me), I found that unless I go into Add/Remove programs in control panel to manually remove anything to do with ATI (followed by a fresh boot before installing new drivers), that whether I try to install new drivers or old drivers, nothing changes.
If anyone else has any suggestions or comments, please add them here so we don't have a bajillion threads on the same problem with pieces of solutions spread out over 1029011231412 pages, or the same person posting in every thread insisting you're an idiot and your files are corrupt no matter what the file checker tells you.
