I've recently capped myself on cone calamary in fishing, and am attempting to cap out on bluetails next (55).

My problem is I cannot find a good bite spot for these fish. Everywhere I go, armed with a minnow and hume rod, I find the bite rates very slow and agonizing.

I intend to get from 51 to 55 on these fish, save them all, then synth them into bait to catch and cap on bhefel marlins and silver sharks.

So, where do you guys find to be a wonderful spot for catching these tricky fish?

East Saru ocean on the south. maybe its west, I forget
You'll catch Bastore Breams as well, which I always found to be easier than blue tails heh.

I sat and fished in east and west saru, both sides in west. I managed to catch 4 bluetails in an hour and a half, and 2 breams. I had full stamina, aside from like, 4 bladefish I caught earlier...

I'll try bubu I suppose, otherwise it may seem that the ferry is still my only option...

Ferry works too. Cake. Cake I tell you.

Ferry. Plus, if you're a BST, the fact that the Sea Monk's spawn radius is all over the entire boat is a definite plus.

I just don't catch monsters period. It took a lot of work, but I've managed to get pretty good at the sweat drop technique (using your characters sweat drops / !s / instinct to tell if it's a big fish, monster, or little fish.

I find that monsters enjoy hanging to one side, IE krakens go really hard to the left but have low stamina, whereas crabs are slow, almost lie items, but have ridiculous high stamina.

IE large sweat drops + !!! + terrible feeling = kraken
whereas medium drops + !!! + terrible feeling = marlin ^_^

It's not hard once you get the hang of it, just pay attention to your guys drops, there's a range of 6-7 sizes I think. They're the old school version of instinct, but always right, thus you can base off the two what mob it is.

And yeah, I've found the ferry to still be the best spot... -.-;

Another tip to go for:

Nashmau -> Halcyon (if you don't have a Lu) -> Robber or Rogue rig.
Target: Istiridye (eastern shall shell)
Cap at 53
They have an insanely high biterate (I catch about 2 to 4 stacks per hour), NPC for 300 gil each and if you have bonecraft leveled there's some more money to make out of them by desynthing them into pearls.
Cancel everything that "You have a bad feeling about" since it usually breaks your line.
Otherwise I think you're experienced enough to notice the difference between items and the real fish.

Wouldn't recommend putting them on AH as they sell slow as hell.

I'm at 54. Bluetails just suck. I think these are just a few of those levels that go a little slow, so here are a few things I've been doing to keep things interesting:

Skill up on bluetails. Catch enough to use for fish mithkabobs if you've got cooking leveled to 49 or so, and save some extra for making slice of bluetail.

When you get bored with that, makes slices of bluetail, and ferry fish for bhefhel marlin. Turn them in to zaldon (selbina), and hope to get a pirate's chart or brigand's chart. I recently went 1/17 on pirate's, so it was a nice bonus, and I got a few skill-ups as well. You can catch noble ladies if you get bored of marlin too.

If you get bored of boat fishing--or rather, bored of docking--head to Misereaux Cost and use halycon and little worm at the waterfall. You can skill up on gold carp and tavnazian goby, plus, if you don't have your halycon yet, you'll be happy with the bonus moat carp you catch as well.

So, I basically just switch it up a bit:
bluetail -> halycon -> minnow -> batallia downs
bhefhel marlin -> composite -> slice of bluetail -> ferry
noble lady (+ nebimonites) -> halycon -> shrimp lure -> ferry
tavnazian goby / gold carp (+ moat carp) -> halycon -> little worm -> misereaux coast waterfall

This should be enough to get you into the sixties. Tav. gobies cap out at 75, but I don't think I'm going to stick with them for long. They're mainly just a bonus skill-up session in my effort to fish up ten thousand moat carps for that long ass quest.

No offense, but everything about this screams "don't bother with this" to me. Please don't take this personally, it's just that it is so easy to both skill-up and profit with fishing at these levels.

Unless you have bonecrafting leveled to the point that you can reliably turn these into pearls or black pearls, you're going to be pulling in a low 3.6k / stack on these. Shall Shell have the same exact bite rate I'd bet in Buburimu (I've caught HUNDREDS), and they sell for 8k / stack, or you can use them to make fish mithkabobs if you've leveled your cooking to 49+. Either way, you will make more money on Shall Shells, and they are very fast and easy to catch. Grab a halycon rod and a robber rig and head to buburimu. I preferred the beaches near Bibiki Bay as I always liked watching the sharks.

Some cooks will possibly be pissed off at me for this, but I'm currently pissed off at a few undercutters so I don't really care. Here's what I did from 40-54+.

Catch 4 stacks of bluetail, head to buburimu (or you could just do this in buburimu if you don't like batallia)
Catch 8 stacks of shall shell, head to sea serpent's grotto
Catch 4 stacks of nebimonite, head to jeuno
Catch 4 stacks of bastore sardines

Buy 4 stacks of fire crystals (4k gil'ish), and turn those fish into 24 stacks of fish mithkabobs, or somewhere between 168k and 192k, plus the money you'll get from selling norg shells and damp scrolls. All that money, plus you will skill up quickly all the way to 55. This is for anyone with fishing in the 40s, not necessarily to the OP. He/she is apparently in the same boat as I am, which is past this glory phase.

Also, if you're a blu, you can cannonball the hecteye on the ledge at SSG and farm up some golden hakutaku eyes from the mindgazers while you're there for additional profit.

Another plus with the bluetails, as I've got high level alchemy, is that I was able to turn all of the cone calamaries into fast cash by making black ink and NPCing it. I actually made off better NPCing ink than auctioning it and usually pulled between 20-30k per session making the ink. But you'll only be able to do this as reliably as I did if your alchemy is 55+, which, comeon, it's alchemy... it's like cooking. Both should be at 60 if you're even attempting fishing.

Lol, very good profit, I'll need to skill up my cooking for those now.

Currently with my alch/wood leveled I go out and catch a tonne of nebs and synth a stack of shihei toolbags...

for free. I can make 300K in one sitting, then spend it on lu shangs. Currently sitting at 7.8K/10K carps. so...close....

I am now at 54, and am just buying my sliced bluetails from the guild... 600-700 gil/stack, I normally catch roughly 15-20 marlins n a round trip to mhaura and back. Still 0/## on both chart quests, keep failing... >.<

I've thought about doing stacks of shihei as I've got my woodworking at 60, but I'm just not patient enough to make so many stacks of stacks. I probably should, but I just enjoy NPCing black ink at the moment. I'm sure I could bump out a little extra profit making shihei though. I should have mentioned that. :)

I just started the Lu Shang quest earlier this week. So far, I'm up to like 454 fish. Damn... This is gonna take forever hahahaha. I'm sitting on a decent amount of money that I'd like to spend on buying up moat carp, but I can never find more than a stack or two (if I'm lucky) in the AH.

I'll probably start buying sliced bluetail from the guild, like you, after I use up my three stacks of bluetail that I've saved up for boat fishing ( = 12 stacks of slices). I was trying to get to 55 on bluetail the other day, but I completely stopped getting points at like 54.4. I even went through 12 stacks of little worms a few days ago catching gold carp and tav. gobies without a SINGLE 0.1 or 0.2. How frustrating is that???

Good luck with your charts. You'll get 'em. :) I about jumped out of my chair when I got my pirates' chart so quickly.

You got your first one easily too?

I managed to get both charts the first time in less than 7 trades. Total. After that it went up to roughly 30 marlins PER chart. Hmmm

Another goal of mine is to camp the mold in sanctuary, I want that Rain hat. It's like the perfect fishing hat.

I can't remember who it was that recommended it on this forum, but I am now a fan of the rusty cap. That thing looks the bomb with the fishing set. Whoever it was, kudos, and I owe you a bunch of rate-ups! :D

People fish blue tails for profit? I'd suggest to not waste your time on them. And from memory, they are hard to catch even 30 level above I still had 'trouble', also the ferry docking constantly wastes some time. The grotto is probably better for that.

Like shirai said, shall shells@buburimu or istritrye@nashmau or tolacca cloves are what you need. Also do the trumpet shells ( vunkerl islet ), they have the same behavior as shall shells, but cap 10 level a bove and im pretty sure you can fish them with a 30 level gap NP, like for shall shells. Lolcrafters buy them to try to HQ the tier 0 bard rings, and the NQ sell for a LOT to NPCs ( 4k?). I personally started on shall shells at lev 35 and it was easy to catch, and they bite a lot, got like 2 level per session.
