Hey-
I have lost internet and cable, and dont have much to do around the house now, other than Console Gaming. I was wondering if any of you could suggest a book to read to pass the time? :o

What are you into?

How about the Narnia series? Geared towards young adults (I don't know how old you are) but still a good read I hear. I myself would like to read them as the movies come out. Or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a good one. Then there's always Harry Potter.

{Hmmm.}

You know, this guy I work with suggested Harry Potter as well, but I think I'll stay away from that for now, dont want to ruin the movies :p

As for what books I like:

1. I have read many books by dean koontz and liked almost all of them.
2. Same as above for Michael Crichton, though I have not read much of him lately
3. There is the guy that wrote "The Davainci Code", read all his books and they were good.
4. Random other Sci-fi themed books

Genre is a little tough, but basicaly thriller, sci-fi, mystery (if I'm in the mood), and horror. Non-Fiction is not my thing.

Ever read The Stand by Stephen King? One of the best books I've ever read. I've read it so many times I had to buy a new copy.

Heh, that good eh? I'll put it on my list. There is a bookstore across the street from where I work, I'll pick one up on my way home.

Ah yes, Dean Koontz. My favorite is "Odd Thomas". Im currently finishing off his new one, "Velocity".

Since you asked so nicely:

Harry gets burned at the stake by Christians for being a witch, and Hogwarts gets invaded by the Vatican army.

Sorry if that offended anyone.

If you want a series that will last for a long time, you might want to try out The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. The series is 10 books right now (he's still writing it). It's a fantasy series similar to Lord of the Rings (although that's like saying Monopoly is similar to Chess... they're both games played on a board, and that's about it). The first book is called The Eye of the World, might want to check it out if you'd be interested in something like that.

Don't do it! He only has to do one thing in the book. That's it. And it's taken him 10 books and he still hasn't done it! These aren't thin books either. These are stubbing your toe in the dark and crying kind of books. (It's a good series, but wow! So slow sometimes.) Another one of the enormous book series that I enjoyed more is Sword of Truth. It's long too but each book has the feel of an actual ending.

I haven't really read any good thrillers lately. And most of the sci-fi I see are series based (star trek, battlestar gallactica, etc.). And Steven King = aliens are the killers! Seems like he starts good but his endings always do a 180 to the wierd.

I'm re-reading some of my fav's right now. Just finished count of monte cristo (<3 revenge  ) and on to fahrenheit 451.

I tried the first book from the The Wheel of Time series. I kept falling asleep, it was just too slow and detailed, and never caught my attention - At all. I know many people love these books, I belong to a linkshell named after that group called The AesSedai in the book. Oh well, to each his own.

Jordan has to wrap WoT the fuck up already. has over 1700 characters to keep track of atm and still growing.

Deed of Paksennarion is a great series by Elizabeth Moon. Fantasy sword n sorcery genre.

Tom Clancy is a great author. Right now I'm reading the series that starts with the book called 'Seventh Son', and am now reading 'Red Prophet'. It is about early America, and the superstitions they had, except in this world they are real.

It is a really great series, but I would suggest any book by him.

I also thoroughly enjoyed most of Dean Koontz's novels. They are a bit repeatitous, but they seem to always draw me in. The latest one I read was 'Odd Thomas', very good stuff.

If you want a nice blend of sci-fi, horror, action/adventure, you might try F. Paul Wilson's "Repairman Jack" novels. I like them a lot.

Some books I read during the summer:

The Stranger; by Albert Camus (Fiction, interesting but depressing).
Dune; by Frank Herbert (Good sci fi here)
Life of Pi; by Yann Martel (Easy read, but makes you think...)

Cheers!

A good sci-fi series with a dark twist is "Otherland" by Tad Williams. It's a 4-book series that's actually completed (unlike Jordan's crap- don't get me wrong, I liked WoT . . . for the first 7 books -_-) so you won't have to worry about being hooked and waiting years for the conclusion.

If you don't mind being hooked and waiting years for the conclusion, then A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin is fantastic. Doesn't have quite as fleshed out a world as WoT, but because of that the books don't drag with thousands of pages of redundant descriptors. First book in that series is "A Game of Thrones".

A lot of the other stuff mentioned is good- first 2 Dune books are good, after that they get a little strange in the timelines and such. Stephen King is usually good, though I like the Dark Tower the best personally (that series has also been completed).

I've currently been reading the "Earth's Children" series by Jean Auel. It's interesting fantasy, set in prehistoric times during the last great Ice Age, when Neanderthals lived side-by-side with our Homo Erectus ancestors. Actually, the first book "Clan of the Cave Bear" was made into a movie starring Daryl Hannah, if you wanna take the easy road out, haha. Books 2 and on are more adult-oriented though, if they were movies they'd be NC-17. ;)
