so i've been trying to lvl bst and from what i can tell i'm not good at it.
currently i'm lvl 15 and i've tried hunting in the Dunes and Pashhow Marshlands, charming DC to EM mobs for pets and fighting T to VTs. Though most of the fights i go through about 2 pets and only get around 80 exp per fight.
Is this normal? do most fights go through multiple pets? or is exp lower then what normal parties get?

Because of the new XP thing with EM and lower mobs, killing EMs with DCs is actually much easier XP than killing T mobs at all.

I personally didn't use pets at all until level 16, and only then because bats in Shakrami hit worms considerably hard for their level, and Worms are rather weak which makes for a great combination as long as you don't use the weakest bats vs the stronger worms.

You're better off killing EP/DC/EM mobs at those levels than throwing a ton of pets at one T or VT. The exp will actually be better and you'll die a lot less often.

So far thats seemed pretty true up to 35...

And at 24 go to qufim and use jug pets against worms, got 4 levels in a day doing that.

If you lvl bst the stereotypical way there are going to be times when you feel like the worst player alive for making -1k xp in some sessions.

It gets better though. Right now you have limited options for charm gear and you have the great ability to take hate from your pet with just a sniffel in the wrong direction.

Like the others have said you may have an easier transition with fighting EM’s and DC’s. The xp adds up quick.

As you get further your pets will start to keep hate better, and it gets a tad easier. Pre-Leave I would suggest getting into the habit of timing your pets death to coincide with your preys last sliver of life. For me it meant switch tanking with my pet and trying my best to measure when it would/should die.

If your pet stays alive you’re stuck with a 30% cut in xp. T pets also give you a xp cut even if they happen to die before your prey… they also don’t stick around long, so chances are if you charm a T, you’ll have two angry after you.

It’s a fun job if you’re looking for something a bit different. I hope you enjoy it.

Although I cannot claim the experience of some of the beastmaster of this board I would basically have my pet attack solo for a few rounds and then join in on an EM mob. We would basically end up swapping hate depending on who hit last. My pet would usually last 3 mobs this way. With the new signet effects it should be even better.

Maybe I was just more aware of the downtime of running around trying to find an EM pet to charm after every fight than I was to killing 3 mobs fairly fast, resting, and then looking for another EM pet.

Toughs never seemed worth the effort. I once at level 14 (I think) took down the named Dhamel in Tahrongi Canyon. I had to throw 7 DC to EM dhamel pets at it to take it down. Along with the mischarms it was a challenge but it was also fun. The things you can end up doing as this class are just amazing if you take a risk that is.

Even at lvl 69, it's still sometimes not worth it to go after the T mobs. I've done a lot of xping on my bst just by going out and finding EP mobs with good drops, and farming them (usually with a jug, though if there's a tougher class of mobs you can charm nearby that's ideal). I'd only get maybe 1-2k xp in an hour but it was risk free and would line my pockets quite nicely.

Yeah, I tended to exp where the money was too, more than where the big numbers are. Really, what's the rush. I was always happier going back to town with 18 antican pauldrons rather than a shitload of rock salt, pugil scales, seashells, etc.

The exception being bombs.

I personally loved the three hours I spent on 67-69. Colibri are such a joke. =P
