Okay so i'd like to play ffxiv but i don't have a good pc...so i'll just make one right? Good, the only problem is i haven't ever stepped inside the guts of a PC. A buddy of mine recently made a PC for ffxiv and sent me some specs, here is what i'll be using, i have a budget of around 1k so let me know what i still need/can upgrade.

Tower- Cooler Master RC-310-BWN1-GP Elite 310 ATX, MATX Mid Tower Case with Window
(I'm assuming this doesn't come with the DVD drive or w/e to install games and what not?)

Processor- Phenom II X4 965 Black AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ

Motherboard- ASUS M4A88TD-M - AM3 - AMD 880G - DDR3 - SATA 6Gb/s - ASUS Core Unlocker - ATX

RAM- Corsair XMS PC10666 RAM - 8GB, (4x2GB), DDR3, 1333MHz, DIMM, Class 9

Power- Cooler Master RS750-ACAAE3-US GX Series 750W Power Supply - ATX, 750 Watts, 80+ Bronze Certified, SLI Ready, 120mm Fan

OS- Windows 7?

Okay so thats what i have so far..i know i need a graphics card but i'm not to sure that i can just go out and pick anyone i'd like that it would be compatible with the stuff i already have? Any tips/suggestions would be great..thanks

sorry if this is wrong section, just thought i'd put it here since the pc will be only for ffxiv

Ill toss you an assist on this one but i need to know a few answers first.

Are you in school still or atleast have an active school email address. If so i have the answer for you. http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/windows/default.aspx

65 dollars for 64 bit windows 7 professional which you wont be able to touch that price anywhere that i know of.

As for the rest of the project it really depends on what you have and what you need.

off your old computer what do you plan on reusing? mouse, keyboard, case, monitor, speakers, drives?

Buying 1000 dollars in components is a vastly better computer than building a 1000 computer.

Made a quote the other day for about the same setup, sorry in advance if formatting sucks, just pulled it straight from one of my temp/notepad file. It should give you a good run for your money and also a good entry point to give you an idea of what you need component wise :). All price are CAD$ so it should be a little less in the states, meaning you can probably get a bigger hdd or a second video card for example depending your budget.

Deja hit the nailed on a lot of things too. If you're a student, you can get indeed a good rebate on your OS. He's also right about what you want to re-use off your old computer. I'm also available if you need some assistance :).

I just upgraded my Dell Studio XPS 8100 for Final Fantasy XIV.
It now has a i7-870 CPU, 16 GB DDR3-1333, 2x1 TB 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache HDD, a GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1 GB DDR5 GPU, and a Corsair CMPSU-650TX PSU. I'm hoping to run Final Fantasy XIV smoothly on it.

I don't think you'll have any problems with that setup. Should run quite well.

Thanks for the comment, Ecks.
I have Final Fantasy XIV installed on my PC.
When I first started to play it, in the evening, I noticed that it was lagging quite bad.
At first I was worried that my PC could not handle the game until I noticed that my automatic backup for Windows 7 was operating in the background.
So I turned off that scheduler and no more lag!
