Burned out on FFXI/WoW?

The game costs money to play no? So wouldn't you think that playing for free isn't legal? Basically the people with private servers have the source code or whatever and just run their own server on a dedicated PC.

The owners of the free servers are using the source code from the actual servers and using it to make their own server of the same game with some minor modifications. Like increased exp per mob, custom npcs, increased drop rates etc.

The only safeguards against being sued is that Gravity (the makers of Ragnarok) dont know WHO to sue.

If I EVER EVER EVER, get my hands on the FFXI source code, you can damn well bet I will be running a private server for FFXI. Not as up to date as the real SE run servers, but you can be damn sure that it would be free for anyone who wants on.

(So long as I have the server capacity for it XD)

Mostly copyright protection. Private Servers aren't paying liscencing rights.

I don't beleive for other games with player run servers the code was stolen, just reverse engineered from the outside. If like the FFXI souce code was leaked people could do ever, ever so much more than just run a server.

They would have access to things like the methedology used for creating crafting results (how to get +1 every time) and how drops are calculated and even true formulas of all that crap we think is right but we're not sure like X attack = Y STR and how much of a bonus TH gives.

What I assume they did in most cases is used existing graphics (all client side), communication schemes and used the formulas that we know such as EXP calculation. I don't know how you would replicate exact mob behavior because there probably wouldn't be enought people to contribute with the exact knowledge (eg: exactly how Jorg changes his attacks at last 20% health). Jorg would still do the same moves but it wouldn't be exactly the same. Not perfect, but good and a new challenge to adapt to instead of already knowing how most things act.

When it comes down to it we really know everything about this game excluding the newest content and the crazy random things like crafting. You could make it 80%+ like real FFXI and the kicker would be it's customizable, pick your gear, change some stats and tactics. An emulated server is very feasable at this time.

How did they create bnetd and the UO ones and how close are they to the real thing?

That is a simple matter of scripts and variables used when determining a monsters attack pattern.

The Script is the attack pattern and the variable is the monsters HP%. When the variable drops to a certain points, the script changes, and with it, the monsters attack pattern.

Damn you Rufus for posting that link, I decided yesterday to download the client and see if the server actually worked, I've tried previous times to get into other private servers but usually lag and filled servers make me delete the game. I wake up today and start playing, and I'm hooked again, RO was probably the first MMO I played seriously, I still remember my exact build from last time, now I've got another game to distract me from FFXI, damnit.. >.<

The legality of pirate servers is a grey area, solong as they don't charge for it's use, people tend to get away with it.

I need a mentor....im currently 11/8..? and all im doing is killing pink blobs..lol, never played the game in my life and its only my second MMO apart from FFXl

You on that private server or the live one?

@Ish: Well you know I played that Flyff game for a while. Like most KMMOs it didn't appeal to me or something. It was actually kinda simpler than most =/... which isn't a bad thing just it felt like it had no real community.
