Hello everyone been looking for a forum for a while now lol, How is everyone?
Im buying Final fantasy XI in 1 or 2 days, im a BIG FF fan and just got back my XBOX and thoght...why not get ffxi lol,

Just a few questions please, Is this game still active? (seems like a silly question but its gonna cost me and + its been out about 4yr's now)

How many servers are there? And what choices do i have?

Is Quetzalcoatl one of them? and how are the people on this one if it is one? :)

And my biggest fears...

I love being Mages and i also love being main attackers (swords etc...) Whats the best job for me to go with (incl sub) I was thinking about Red mage, but if so what sub, or the other way around because i Wanted to be a dark knight also,

Is dark knight and red mage good? If so (i hope so) whats bes as main and whats best as sub?

Thank you, And nice to meet you all

BUMP!

Woah no reply's, NP,

I just need to know whats the way for me, I might wanna be

Dark Knight: whats best sub?
Is black mage okay?

lol, i'm sure there's plenty of guides around if you search.. I quit when Monks and Ninjas were ownage so I don't know...If you care more about your characters looks then go for DRK, lol

To be honest, at this stage in the games life, it's better to forget it exists. Especially if you value your normal life. I'm not sayin' this because FFXI is a bad game, it's not at all, however, it's really "too late", imo.

1) Yes, this game is still active, it has plenty of people that play it.

2) I don't know offhand, but there's alot. As for choice, I don't really know what to say.

3) Yes, Quetzalcoatl is one of the servers. And I can't really say. There's good people and bad on all servers. You're always going to meet an asshole somewhere, so you can't really do much about it.

And as for the job choices...You don't need to choose one job and just stick with it. You can play and level many jobs at once. I, for example, (when I played) leveled Samurai and Monk to 75. On my other character I also leveled Black Mage to 70 or so. You can level as many jobs as you like on one character. Just be wary of race and it's advantages/disadvantages for that job. For example, Hume has the most balanced stats, so it would be best for leveling a big mix of jobs. On the other hand, Galka has high STR/VIT/HP which is good for tanks and melees. Tarutaru has high INT/MP, which is good for mages. The list goes on, but just do what you like, you're paying for it.

I just saw this now. General Discussion is a better place for this.

To answer your questions, sub jobs vary with what you're going to want to be doing, however:
You will need to take a job of the following to 30 prior to unlocking Dark Knight. It is an advanced job, and because of this you'll need to be lvl 30 on a base job to unlock it.
BLM, WHM, RDM, WAR, THF, MNK encompass the base jobs.

I'd recommend WAR to 30, as this will make the best sub right away for DRK. However, once you hit 30, you'll have other options.
Eventually as you reach 75 you'll want to have WAR, NIN, SAM, and THF subs available. BLM should only be used as a subjob for DRK to warp :)

Hope this helps.

Blue Mage is a nice mix of physical and magical damage dealing.

It can be an expensive job to level and gear well, however, and there are also not very many good BLUs around Quetz. If you're one of those BLU/NINs pre-74, that isn't in a party that specifically calls for extra damage mitigation, I have a friend who will personally castrate you.

As has been said, you can level more than one job. WAR is a safe bet to take to 30, for it can serve as an addequate sub for several jobs. After you hit 30, ask around, perhaps even here, and you'll surely find help unlocking other jobs. Take a couple for a spin and see where you want to go from there. Your party experience on WAR should give you a better idea of what jobs appeal to you.

I'd also like to suggest planting the seeds of finance early. It's going to hurt when you find yourself at the level where gear options open up, and you're broke from having just started. Since the game has been around, many people's standards in terms of what is expected of players has increased.

If you start, a good reference on what costs how much and what's worth farming/mining/harvesting/growing/etc., is http://www.ffxiah.com.

As soon as I started the game, I began mining and Goldsmithing. I didn't take Goldsmithing all the way, but it financed me for a good while. I also started in Bastok, and promptly found farming (or killing mass amounts of a particular monster in order to attain and sell its common drop in large quantities) Bees in North Gustaberg very profitable. Hell, I still do it from time to time.

This is a difficult game to jump into and be productive, but Quetz has a decent forum community, and I'm sure you can find help or advice here. I reccomend staying away from the Flameboard, though, lol. It's known to slaughter many a lost newcomer.

Hi Orez,

There are many guides and many suggestion sites available on the web.

The most-used of these as far as I know is "The Wiki", at www.wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Main_Page

Search to you hear's content, and enjoy the game.

Red Mage, while played out to be a melee + mage combination by SE, doesn't really fulfill that roll in the end. You'll be pulling the "mage" end of the job more often than the "melee" portion.
I'd say go with the suggestions of everyone else and go DRK. Their elemental magics give a resounding MEH, but you'll have a blast with your Dark Magic.

Mnk's were never ownage, and drk geared right is in the top four DD imo (war, drk, nin, sam), so definitely not just for looks.

Drk subs: /sam (lvl 50+, best sub imo), /war, /nin, /drg (if you happen to get a kraken club)

Rdm subs: /whm, /blm, /sch, /drk

This is a post in Meet & Greet because he has not played the game yet.

1. Still active
2. 32 servers - Complete server list can be viewed on ffxiah.com
3. Quetzy is indeed one of those servers. You can find helpful players and also complete dicks on any server.

I'm no mage, but as far as DD with spell-casting I would consider Blue Mage the appropriate choice. It is a job that you can quest to unlock after lvl 30 I believe. You will want to level warrior and then unlock and level ninja or dancer in order to be effective as a BLU. (This is my opinion, not fact. For fact I'm sure someone else will chime in to correct me - this is qcdn after all. lol)

If you want to try Red Mage, you should level white mage and black mage for and appropriate sub job. You can also benefit with a ninja sub for solo play.

One aspect of this game that may discourage you is money. It would be best to start leveling a craft immediately to supplement your income. Some crafts can be beneficial to your character as you level as well as helping your wallet.

I hope this is helpful to you. There can be great friends and helpful linkshells to be found on Quetzalcoatl if you decide to chose it.
