Can someone please explain this to me?

I was reading the official playonline website to check on any updates, and I came across a heading that said that some of the technical difficulties they were having were due, in part, to third party attacks. They called it an "organization-wide DDos attack"; now, I must admit that I'm not very computer savy, so I don't know what that means. I was hoping that someone might explain to me what a DDos attack is, and what would be the point? I mean what is there to gain from doing this, other than making other people miserable?
 
Basically, people are sending information to SE's computers that they don't like, and it's causing the computers to either shut down, not work properly, or work very slowly (at least I think that's how a DDoS attack works). It's essentially the Internet version of busting up someone's car - it hurts them, but with no real gain for the person doing it other than their own satisfaction.

Basically their servers are being flooded which then keeps legitamite players from connecting.
 
A better analogy would be it's more like stuffing a few rolls of toilet paper down a toilet all at the same time.

That basically sums it up, but DoS attacks are usually internal WORMS, not viruses, and are not caused by outside entities. So someone inside SE's internet either did something or, someone outside got the best of them :? .
 
Pretty much, the gilsellers are probably getting back at them, they've been fired from their job so they are making money by hacking SE.
 
That's pretty much the same theory I presented on Allakhazam. I've asked a gil seller at one point way back when why they did it. He said that he sold gil so he could pay his rent. XD So, I could only imagine that it would be a strong reason to want to disrupt honest players. Luckily I haven't seen that particular gil seller since the massive account banning that SE had. ^^; Anyhow, hopefully they clear this up soon.
 
DoS attacks are remote computers trying to repeatedly connect to a server but being denied, they then set it so it attempts to connect to the server very rapidly, making the targetted server lose a lot of its working capacity. I think

So, since some people have had problem connecting they've gotten third party programs to connect to FFXI and are thus making things worse?

My thoughts.
 
More like people got the third-party progrograms and made things bad first, -then- people started having problems connecting.

The first one comes from 1 source, the second comes from many.

Probably 1 or more of the 800 assholes that got banned.

that was my thought. though it would only take one or two of them to write a nifty little trojan program, and have it distribute remotely. give it a few weeks to propagate, then give the bots a call and send out the attacks.

se doesnt act on gil sellers, we complain. se bans ppl, they ddos, we complain. lol, i bet se is thinkin $12.99 a month aint enough for all this shit.

Prob cause some of them where bots, and turned the game on and turned on bot mode..forgetting the game for months..and then comming back to find they've been banned :roll: I made it up..I'm bored xD
 
ahhh so thats what was happening. I heard from my LS that some people were having trouble getting in, so i just didnt logoff in fear of having connection troubles hehe. Did this involve the huge AH and /search crash too or was that something different....
