Captain America 1941-2007

Captain America is a bit of a dated concept anyway. It's more of a Frank Castle kind of world these days. But whatever happens, Marvel has stressed that if the character comes back it won't be Steve Rogers behind the mask.

From Reuters:
"This is the end of Steve Rogers, the meat and potatoes guy from 1941," Dan Buckley, president and publisher of publishing, Marvel Entertainment, told Reuters.

"But Captain America is a costume, and there are other people who could take it over. He is iconic, and we're continuing the comic books," he added. But he declined to speculate who could step into the hero's 66-year-old boots.

Ono, not another John Walker!

-.-

I want ye olde tyme Cap back.

/cry

so will the USAgent be taking up the banner again like before? any comic buff knows what im talking about.

Nah, USAgent fled to Canada, oddly enough.

Marvel hasn't stated either way what's going to happen to Cap. It's implied that the shots he took didn't kill him and he's back in stasis or some such nonsense.

God damn it all. Captain America was one of maybe two legitimately badass surperheros who wasn't just overly cheap. He fought fucking Nazis! This is a sad day.

Hell yeah, I could read about him punching Nazis all day.

It was in the gut.

O_o

huh, i thought i heard it was the head. I just saw the panel where he's shot. Alright, so a shitty sniper who couldn't get a head shot right killed cap, still a bitch ass way kill him off.

Captain America shield bequeathed to Stephen Colbert

Despite the sad news that the Marvel comic book character Captain America has apparently been whacked, fans including truthiness slinger and defender of all things American, Stephen Colbert, were up in arms over the news of the beloved superhero’s death.

Tonight on Stephen Colbert's Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report", Stephen read a letter penned by Marvel Comics editor in chief Joe Quesada, who graciously bequeathed the famous shield of Captain America to the man most deserving to own and protect it.

According to the Comic Book resources site, The shield, "granted to Captain America by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 is composed of several virtually indestructible--yet classified--metallic alloys.

Though not his first shield, Cap famously used this circular weapon as both a rallying force for U.S. troops, as well as to battle Nazis prior to his disappearance at the end of World War II. Upon his reemergence decades later, the shield followed with him."

More than 60 years after its creation, the shield remains a symbol of American strength and will.

This gift, on the heels of a boutique ice-cream created in his honor, satirist Colbert was visibly verklempt.

He was shot in the back of the neck I think actually. Then his girlfriend came up and shot him in the stomach repeatedly.

I flipped through it in passing. Apparently she was under some sort of post-hypnotic suggestion.

The Clip from The Colbert Report, incase anyone had missed it, or(for some reason I won't understand) doesn't watch it.

How the heck can they do that to Captain America?

But, not it all makes the image of Frank Castle/Punisher more important and significant when he takes Cap's Mask after he surrenders at the end of CW.

It's looking like The Punisher is going to take the job.

That's America these days when the symbol of all that's good and decent about the country is ripped away and a psycho can waltz in and try to fill his shoes. The next thing you know we'll have the American government condoning torture of pris-- oh, wait...

Wait...Superman died?

lol -.- I obviously don't keep up with comics ><

I still have the "Death of Superman" issues. I keep them in the plastic, in boxes high in my closet.

Great series.

RIP cap'n.

The Punisher is infinately cooler than Captain Crunch.

Fuck Punisher. Colbert for Cap.

Captain America hasen't done anything worthwile in comic books for eons, this is just Marvel's way of trying to make him popular again. I don't know why comic book companies feel the need to kill a character everytime they need to give them a sales boost, why not try writing some reader worthy stories or something instead. Killing a character and then bringing them back is a temporary solution to a long-term problem. Just like when they killed superman, most people who picked up that issue hadn't even read a superman comic book, or if they had it was years ago, totally rediculous if you ask me. Most people are in love with the image of characters like superman and captain america when in reality they don't even read comics anymore.

Lame if you ask me - I was talking with my comic book guy - mike, and Marvel totally screwed over the comic book stores with this little publicity stunt by not telling them what was going to happen in the book - giving no warning to pick up some extra issues and then pulling some bullshit marketing crap with CNN right after. Needless to say, he's pretty choked.

God I'm glad I read Batman.

Who cares how long it's been since he's done something? Shit, imho, I feel the reason Captain America isn't as popular now-a-days and he was in the 40's is because patriotism in America is shot to shit? Why? Because this world is full of pussies and cowards who think crying will earn them freedom.

Marvel, that's who - I'm not saying Captain America is a shitty character - I'm saying he hasn't done anything sale-worthy in eons. Him being Marvel's character and him not earning them money is a big deal to them.

I would of rather seen Marvel do something with Captain America that peaked reader interest that didn't kill him.

PS: If you think that that's the reason Captain America isn't selling, let me ask you - do you even read his comic books? Don't get all preachy about a character you're not even putting your money in to support.
