hey guys,

If the title is nsfw then by all means change it.

Well I tried installing my Blackberry stuff onto my laptop, the CD/DVD drive opens as usual I put the Disc in and hear it spin, I usually get the autoplay popup, but this time nothing appears, so i eject and retry....still nothing. I go to my computer and notice that my cd/dvd isn't there and ask everyone who has vista to see if it is.

I am on a laptop and removed the drive and put it back in, but still nothing. Any help would be really appreciated as I need to format this thing soon and can't coz the discs won't read ><.

thanks for the help,

Hit

I went through this recently with our old laptop here at the office.

First, go to Device Manager and make sure it didn't somehow become turned off.
If that doesn't work, there's a few options you can try.

Pop the disc into another PC and create an image file of the disc. Copy it through the network to your laptop/ use a flash drive. Install Daemon tools and install the virtual drive and use that to install your disc.

You can install windows through a network, or even from a flash drive.

As for your cd drive itself, it may have just gone out. I'd check your manufacturer's website for any relevant drivers and/or updates.

It's in the Device manager but has a yellow triangle with an ! inside it, I tried updating it, it's also not disabled ><.

I'll try the Image thing After Dynamis tonight, we'll see how it goes.

Minor malfunction ; ;. Time for new drive.

Sometimes it may be the controller that's fried too, hard to say.

Imaging idea is good if you need solution before you're able to acquire a new drive.

Quick fix try: Delete the drive from device manager (not from bios), right click your computer at the top of the device manager list and click scan for new hardware. If it pops up without the yellow !, then should be ok, if it still pops up with the yellow !, then something's wrong.

Good Luck.

Don't know if you got this repaired or not yet Hitaru, but we can set aside some time to get you going via vent / webex sometime soon.

Usually, the first sympton of malware (virus or some grayware) is a disappearing peripheral. The alternatives of losing a driver, mysteriously becoming deactivated, etc always should raise a red flag unless you have been making system modifications recently. That doesn't sound like the case.

Also, if an onboard controller was to fail on today's standard hardware its most likely you would see other symptoms as the single capacitors these represent currently almost never blow alone. Thank god we no longer have the days of ISA/PCI controller cards for a single drive. ^^

Not repaired yet, we can try today after Dynamis

Actually its not a drive malfunction its a windows driver malfunction. Had this happen commonly in my last job on windows vista machines. SP1 seemed to fix majority of them. I will see if i can find the TechNet article on how to fix this

Thanks Nugo, any help would be appreciated =D

this happened with my laptop when i try to copy a "home movie". it seemed that restrictions on the disk caused the drive to just spool up and pretty much cause the program being used to stop responding. all i had to do to fix my issue was just reboot. i hardly doubt its a hardware malfunction. more of an OS issue

I doubt it's a driver issue. He didn't do any major updates nor did he update the OS.

But if Nugo's method works, let us know.

Not to sound arrogant or annoying but this:

Makes me 99% positive im correct given its a vista machine given how many machines with that symptom i have fixed.

Yeah, I got round to doing it, and it worked, I appreciate it Nugo ^^

thank you for your help

Hmm, I've had this problem in XP before, turned out to be something completely different. I was going off the initial diag from the OP - he said it stopped working after he tried to install his BB drivers. Solution you provided was to fix a problem caused by an upgrade to Vista. I just wish I knew what really went wrong since he didn't mention or state upgrading to Vista?

In XP it is likely it was a bad drive. This particular issues and the resolution only apply to Vista not XP.

Yeah I got that, but he said it was working as usual before until something happened. He didn't alter the driver or just upgrade, he always had vista.

I'm wondering what happened from the time he put the BB CD in, and what actually caused the malfunction.

well it doesn't matter no more =D it was fixed ^^;

ive fixed like 15 machines with this issue. there is nothing i can really say to explain it besides things just get corrupt... all the people i asked about it said it just happened nothing special with normal operation.
