are there people who actually care about the number of their postcount? I always figured most of the PC+1 peeps just liked to hear themselves talk.

I don't understand. Wouldn't this board just be the lesser of the two evils. Wouldn't everyone choose to post on the board that they could freely express themselves?

Some do. Probably because you need X number of posts to set a custom title. Or because more posts = more e-penis wagging. I don't know, I've never understood why post count means anything. Then again, this is the first forum I've even been in where I've posted more than 2-300 posts, ever.

The message got through. If the mod doesn't get a joke, or doesn't like the way a thread is headed, people can get tossed on read only. Sorry but I don't think 3 people should be judging the value of the content in this board and possibly use it to excuse punishment.
I agree, in the end I am the only one who can restrict access, mods can't do so. Mods also can't delete posts for good, instead they can do a "soft delete" which means that the post is removed from the thread for regular users, but other mods and I can still see it.

Bigboy said:
If no one will get punished, then why all the threats?
I don't believe I said that no one will get punished. I said that no one will get punished for contributing to the discussion.

Is the measure of whether or not a post is a contribution subjective? Sure is. However, I would like to think that the standard by which posts are measured is common sense.

If you don't like the way a conversation is going, dont post in it. Who requested the FB suddenly get rules? Shouldn't they have to abide by what you said? You dont like how the FB was then GTFO and dont read it, and dont mess it up for everyone who did.
You suggested that the Flameboard be deleted because it became useless in your opinion. Since that is not your decision to make I offered you an alternative, which is that you don't have to participate if you don't like the way it is run.

Please don't make me find some zero content posts to illustrate where this rule would take effect if such post would be made now. Just read any of the threads that have more than 10 pages and you will find pleny of such posts. (The reason why I don't want to point them out now is because I don't want to target individual users publically, if you really want examples PM me.)

How about we just make the original FB not add to post count? I see how that would remove alot of the PC+1 posts. The FB itself is a different beast when compared to the rest of the site anyhow, making 2 boards seems like a lot more effort than is needed.

Possibly. IMO a forum like that would not be taken seriously whatsoever, and people with valid concerns/flames would stick to the current board while the retarded circlejerks would stay in the other one. I dunno, it worked for SA with FYAD and they seem to do alright with tons of moderation AND requiring paid membership.

delete this if you want, your ruining the flame board

WTF is this shit

Flameboard Quetzalcoatl - We Know Drama! Now with 100% more moderation!

Fuck that, take your fucking rules and shove them up your asses :rtfm:

This is about as bad as the fucking Police PFF

Don't like the Flameboard, don't read it, don't post to it, simple as that.
tell that to these fucking pricks that don't like participating in it.

But threads like "OMG <insert player name here> sucks and is so gay!" are just going to cut it anymore.
there goes all the best discussions and its the ones that take it off topic that make them good.

Anachy(how ever its spelled) doesn't rain with some people pressing the delete and change title button every 2 seconds, or is this some way to save space in your limited size database? :spiteful:

but you said yourself sculli

What's wrong with One liners and pictures that illustrate what you want to say?

Personally, I won't have a problem with any of these new "Rules" except that one. I like one liners and Strange pics, they make me laugh. Hell, it's the only thing worth a damn contributed by many many QCDNers, Cubs included.

Betting on the length of a thread? Who gives a shit, do it in another thread.

I realize you guys try to moderate, but if a thread isn't interesting to you then GTFO. Don't make new rules.

Hell the only reason Cubs is even an admin is because of Seppuku. Now that we have Sculli, who actually reads the boards, instead of Pupusa who basiclly handed it off to The mods (Which most of the disappeared), we no longer need flameboard admins, and we damn sure don't need new rules.

Again, none of these rules really apply to me except maybe the one liners and pictures. I'll still continue to post whatever I want whenever I want till someone bans me from doing so.

As far as threads being derailed... your mods, right? You can't split a thread where it derailed and give the new part a new and appropriate name?

Too many rules. This is a preventive measure that didn't need to be taken, will cause more arugements than resolutions, might make people leave, and is an all around bad idea and pointless gesture of control that you can neverenforce withou alienating most people that like to post here.

:2cents:

I understand what you are saying Sculli, and I understand that almost no one will be affected by these changes. I also can name a few people who are prime offenders when it comes to PC+1 and just meaningless derailment of threads into oblivion. I just feel that the rules, as added, act as a tool for intimidation and we may loose some of the funnier posts because people fear they might get in trouble.

The message the rules bring to FB users is not just what is listed in them, but also that this is no longer a free domain to rant as you wish, but a regulated zone where content will be judged. I fear that the usage of the FB will drop over this, and not just the useless posts that the rules intended to limit.

Sometimes the things not written are the most important parts of the text. These rules, while not directly negative, bring the shadow of the iron curtain upon the FB. Might as well remove the anarchy part from the description, since it is no longer valid.

he did that already

This is indeed an option, but I decided against it because it would affect all users alike, and I felt that it wasn't justifyable to screw everyone over just because a few can not get their act together. The new policy is aimed at a very small and specific subset of all flameboard posts, while not at all affecting the rest of the posters.

passions said:

I don't believe this is true passions. The goal is not to discourage discussions, the goal is to promote good discussions that would otherwise be drowned out by posts like:
"I like cheese"
"I am having cake"
etc.

Trippyhippy said:

The problem with betting on thread length is that is encourages zero content posts with the only aim to raise the page count.

Re: one-liners, just use common sense, check the above on-liners which were used on the board totally out of context (the discussion wasn't about cheese or cake), to get a sample of what a deletable one-liner is, not all one liners will be deleted, as you stated, some are quite good.

BigBoy said:

I really don't believe there is reason to be fearful. In the past any QCDN rules have always been enforced with the maximum possible extend of courtesy toward the user, I don't expect that to change. However, establishing these rules is necessary to deal with a very small number of individuals that would otherwise just say "Well, there are no rules that say I can't do this!".

I have actually done that.

The way I see it is Sculli's website, Sculli's rules.
There is that, but I would prefer if people could agree that it's not an unreasonable request to ask users to not spam the board with mindless crap.

This whole discussion comes up every so often, if you are hardcore you can look through the old posts and find previous iterations of "guys, no more spam" "but it's the flameboard!".

The new policy isn't all that new either, it's an extension of Thread crapping needs to stop!.

I mean is there seriously someone here who would say: "This request is unreasonable, I can not possibly make a post that has actual content in it!!".

When it comes to the Flameboard I think assuming anything is a foolish venture.

The thing is, people have not been proactive about the current issues. The BoL flame had posts deleted in it (by Sculli, before my sticky) and it's still at 600 posts and climbing. So it turns to the mods to be proactive - and yes, Bigboy, people have said they don't visit QCDN/Flameboard due to the general level of shit posting in big threads.

Once again, I assure you, this change didn't happen without careful consideration and admin approval. And for 95% of you it means absolutely nothing. Lastly, should I somehow go out of control and delete wantonly I know Sculli will have no problem taking moderation out of my hands.

I have faith that these new rules will not require a single post to be deleted (and current posts are safe - it's not fair to those who didn't know before this.) But as I said before, assuming and faith when it comes to the Flameboard may be foolish. Prove me wrong.

Trying to prove you wrong is well kind of pointless, because you can't compile enough examples or scour through all threads to get an idea of what is succesful and what isn't. In truth though, you are the one proposing the idea, its your burden of proof.

I'm not saying more moderation is bad, I've seen the threads in the Suggestions, I'm saying your guidelines concerning "zero content" are ambiguous at best, and what is the bright line to determine if something should be deleted.

I agree on the messageboard my friend runs. www.prestone.co.uk if anyone wants to check it out, it has a minimum character number per post. That helps with some things but not all. People who post mindless crap should just be banned end of.

One liners and internet fads are posted by talentless buffoons who don't have the creativity to do anything but pick a sentence and try to cleverly respond to it, if they even bother that...and juvenile internet-reared dorks who think posting the MR kid running from the sports car with the subtitle PWNED was even remotely novel a decade ago. Add to that all the sycophantic fanboys who do little but show up and act like they're some sort of qualified judge to do nothing but post who they think just got burned, owned, ruled, rocked, told, put, or whatever as the thread rolls alone, and you have a malignant tumor of useless posters who do nothing but take up server data. People too lazy to contribute, so they take the path of least resistance--fads and 1-liners, because if they say anything more they'll outstrip their capabilities as a contributor. Anyone can pick a sentence and retort like a smartass little turd, and even if that's the closest most can come to ever participating in something they're addicted to, I say raise the bar as well. 1-liners, internet fadders, and non-contributive fanboy cheerleeder wannabes need to sit down and shut up.

ok...intentions. Lets take the biggest example of "rules" ever. Government. Often, rules are set into effect, laws as such...with the best intentions in mind (Not always). It may very well be, these rules, are meant to bring better content discussions. But its my argument, that intentions, rarely has anything to do with actual effect. Government, is the best example. Schools, is another. Somewhere, somehow, the rules will be used to ban or restrict someone, who truly does not deserve it, just as laws often end up doing more harm than good. Does this mean, no laws? No. But why is it, whenever rules set into play, don't have the "desired" effect, the answer is...more rules?People WILL be afraid to speak thier mind, especially...if in thier mind, thier form of expression...is deemed beneath what others feel "is acceptable". Who has the right, to say "OMG, your such a noob" isn't truly...a valid argument. It may seem stupid in one case, but yet...oh so true in another, lol. Thread crapping needs to stop, you made that clear, just enforce it. Don't start adding more rules that will scare off the good stuff I and many others laugh at.

How could they be anything but ambiguous? If you have any ideas on how to formulate them so that it is more clear, please do share them. The rules say "stupid one-liners", however, people only read and quoted "one-liners" here and got all upset about that one-liners are not allowed anymore, totally dropping the qualifier from the original text.

"Zero content" seemed like the most appropriate term to describe it.

I must have deleted some 30 posts from the current BoL thread last night. Seems to me like no one missed them, not even the posters. That's a pretty good indication for zero content to me, though I wouldn't want to suggest we delete on a 'trial-and-error' basis. I looked through the post, and I deleted comments about which page we are on, how many pages it will be, how many pages were added in the last 10 minutes, etc.

The actual content of that thread was 100% preserved.

trying to get good, well-thought out arguments out of the majority of this board users is going to be difficult considering the average age of the users of ffxi and this board (15-25?)- typically poorly uneducated, without developed argumentative skills.
