Check these vids out for some Packet Sniffing sweetness....

Only one thing to say...

Still feeling 'ethical' about HNM camping?

EDIT: Kyle, can you link the thread too?

Seriously, that's crazy. I mean, I see people bitching constantly about packet sniffing and how they can't claim. But GMs say its not illegal to use right? If you want them HNMs so bad, beat them at their own game.

Actually I've seen those videos(there's at least 4 actually), they've been out there for a while. However what they imply has been debated. From the beginning of the countdown, it's too long before the spawn for the information to be in the client. Packet sniffers don't give you a half minute advanced warning, that's delving into server side information. It's possible that countdown was for the opening of the window.
For all who don't know about fafnir/nidhogg, he's based on small windows inside of large windows, and the opening of small windows is timable to the exact second based on his ToD.
This doesn't mean that the guy didn't have a packet sniffer. If you noticed he's a paaldin at least under level 73 judging by his gear. He claimed and then logged off. That's fishy as hell for someone to be so confident they'll come just for the claim not even intending to fight it(in terms of their confidence to be able to claim). I'm just saying the countdown doesn't prove it persay.

Props to the person who waded through the truly horrific ammount of data packets being sent/received from the server to determine the exact sequence signifying a spawn window. Especially at a highly populated camp like that. o.O

Edit: If that is really what's happening here, and SE cared, they shoud roll out an encryption layer. However, smart money is on them not giving a damn.

Yeah I hear you firestreak, i think the window theory is more likely, and the person just got lucky on a pop, especially because he logged after the claim. I think its more of a "hey look what we can do suckers stop camping him because we can claim him" video to scare off some people or to piss people off.. or start threads like this :)

It's not hard to determine the spawn window if you were there the previous day. From the 30 second countdown, it just looks like he knew when the window was going to open and was counting down to it. The logging right after is suspicious, but maybe he has a second character or something and was just helping with the claim.

this guy said to be a 60pld who bots claim, and gives to whoever pays him.

Ever read a packet monitor? You'd have to go sift through a ridiculous ammount of data to find the sequence that signifies that spawn window (would first have to determine what exactly denotes the series of packets for this action) then output the log to some kind of pattern recognition algorithm to signal you that the pattern is being initated.

Maybe there is some program out there that does this already. I'm just sayin, props to whoever it was that took the time to do that.

No, you can do it manually if you were there the previous day. Like Firestreak said, he's got a small window within a larger window. If you were there the previous day, you know both, so you'll know all you'll need to know, and a packet sniffer won't help much.

I'm also curious how you know so much about them.

He doesn't know much about them, it's just a general guess at what you'd have to do to make a packet sniffer. It sounds detailed and complicated, but that's basically how you'd go about making a packet sniffer to just about anything.

he don't have to use a packet sniffer to figure out Fafnir's exact spawn window.

Go there, watch him die, type /clock the second he dies. Let's say it's 1:30:25 PM

go there next day, the exact time of his windows, that are open about 1 sec, would be:

1:30:25 PM
2:00:25 PM
2:30:25 PM
3:00:25 PM
3:30:25 PM
4:00:25 PM
4:30:25 PM

if he didn't spawn on the windows before, you'll know he spawns exactly 4:30:25 PM, so feel free to use chainspell and spam sleep...

You don't have to use a packet sniffer to count down.

Been working with half a dozen different types of them for about 6 years now at my job. Countless hours spent troubleshooting connection and encryption problems makes me cringe at the ammount of data I would imagine is being transfered to our computers from the Q.

...actually, now I am curious as to know exactly what the tcp stacks look like. I just may have to shanghai a network monitor from.. uh.. somewhere (>.>) and give this a looksee.

Ah, I was just curious because it kinda seemed like you might have used one fof FFXI. Although, based on how you were explaining them, it made more sense that you had designed some for work or something. I didn't want to just say that you were using one for FFXI, since it was more likely that you were using one for something else.

I meant ffxi specific packet sniffers. (and again maybe you do know about those.. but then I'd ask the same question bajaratt asked ;) )

Logging out after a claim isn't that strage... Some people have multiple characters, and will use one for claims but perhaps will be needed as the other for the fight :p I've seen it before.

I still think packet sniffing is a disgruntled NA's fairytale. Like others have said, windows within windows often make NM camping 100% technical and 0% merit. The only guesswork: Where do you want to stand?

If you do all you can do, I doubt the claims of JP latency/sniffing will hold weight. Many people don't do all they can do, and may assume that no one can do it better than they can. This is why I got a GM called on my for provoking leaping lizard...paranoia and ego makes people think they're the best at something, when skill has nothing to do with it. It's either luck, or preparation.
