Ok, I've read the debate on other boards, and I'd just like to know everyones opinion on whether or not its rude to check someone.

Personally, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. And if for some reason it does bother you, turn off the notification. I've read that the message translates into something offensive in japanese (which I think is total BS) but anyway if it offends you, turn it off and quit whining :D I mean, if battle spam from other parties annoys you, you wouldnt tell every party around you to stop fighting would you? you would use the filter, thats what its there for, same as the /blist :D

-Ham

I would have to agree with you Hamburgler. I like to see what people at a higher level are wearing. If the person appears to be up to nothing (waiting for a party or something) I send them a /tell to see how the equipment combo is working for them. I am always as polite as I know how, and I always get a pleasant response. I find that people are fairly proud of their stuff, and are willing to discuss the pros/cons. If someone was not nice, I would apologize for waisting their time, and move on. There are only another bajillion character's to check...... :D

Chekin is not rude i dont like how people think it is :x

I want people to be able to see the name of my linkshell, and think favorably of me or my LS mates because of it. How can you know peoples LS without checking them?

I agree totally, Hamburgler. And I like when people check me. I work hard to get the best equipment I have, and judging by how many people have such crappy equipment, or simply average stuff, it makes me feel badass having completely up-to-date equipment, as well as half of it being +1 versions of stuff (at least that's the case with my NIN ^^;;). Or in the case of my THF, having so much +DEX, +AGI, +ATK, +Evasion... you get the idea. And the full Mercenary Captain set (including the belt), dispite the fact that pretty much every piece of it is ~10k, and the belt ~15k. (got the head, body, hands, waist, legs, and feet).

But I digress. Point: I work hard for my equipment, and I enjoy any chance I get to show it off. I don't see why it would be different for anyone else. Like Hamburgler said, if you don't like it, turn on your filter for it and you'll never know they're doing it.

'Checking' isn't rude, to a point. 1 Check means nothing really. Sort of a compliment. But when you get 5+ checks in a few min, gets to be a little weird.

*yes there is filter, but I don't like it, strange yes*

I think the problem is that
xxx examines you.
'stays' on your screen. If it disappeared (i know it can't, but lets say), then whenever I look at chat box, it wouldn't appear that the same person 'keeps' examining me.

If there is no chat in ls or anything, that xxxexamines you. stays there...a long time, and when look ing at it after 10 min and see the 'same' person's name, feels rude, but then you think about it and realize you should just spam a macro to get rid of the existing chat :P

I have no problem with being checked. There are a few things that irk me, but never so much that I'd send a tell to the checker or anything. I get irked when-

1) Someone checks me more than 2 times. I take the first check as routine- I know I'm often curious about other peoples job, stuff, and linkshell, so I have no problem with it. A second check is OK, though borderline- maybe they forgot to look at something, or hit esc by mistake. But if you have to check me 3 times or more in a span of 5 minutes, wtf?

2) People who check me, and don't bother to look in my bazaar. That's just the salesman in me- I know I can't make money if noone even comes into the store, so if I get a check I'd appreciate it if they at least look and see what I'm selling. When I check someone who has a bazaar, what they're selling is the first thing I look at- only after I've done my shopping, do I look at their equipment and such.

Ok im on the other side here. Alright I'm not gonna ever /tell someone if they check me, but Id rather they didnt. Sometimes I care and sometimes I dont. If i want to look at someone I ask if its ok. I used to be one of those people who check every single person running by me. Then I started to slowly phase that out and I started to realize that as I ran around and got checked by every person in West Ronfarue it got rather annoying. I mean seriously, when EVERY single person you come across checks you every day that you play...it gets really grating...to me anyways. Another thing is I have begun to play with more JP parties. Due in part to either my schedule or because the fact that I am leveling Bard and even a JP party wont turn down a NA Bard helps. But I noticed today that I partied with one for about 2.5 hours and not one check. I never check anymore unless its someone asking to be in my party with an underleveled subjob then I will check to see if they have decent gear or someone checks me first. I dont know, just bothers me a tad...and why should I have to filter something. That is also like saying filter /say or /shout....sure it will get rid of lots of crap, but then I might miss things as I go along.

I was told that when you "examine" the japanese players - the /em that comes up is "Jender looks you up and down" instead of "Jender examines you" so if you do it a few times in a row, they get offended. A friend of mine learned this the hard way - when confronted by a GM about "harrassing a JP player. Pretty stupid - it should translate the same in all languages to avoid this sort of frustration, but...what can you do?

Xoxoxo, JENder

Checking me does not bother me if it's done once. When people start doing it over and over then it becomes annoying.

I dont really care if they check me or not, sometimes i examine them or use the /sea all command
