Two New Zealand men have been convicted of murdering a three-year old girl, after months of torturing the child.

Wiremu Curtis, 19, and his brother Michael, 22, face life sentences for the murder of Nia Glassie.

Nia died of brain injuries in hospital on 3 August 2007, two weeks after suffering fatal kicks to her head.

The judge in the four-week trial, Judith Potter, wept as she delivered the sentence and thanked similarly shaken jurors for coping with the case.

Nia's mother, Lisa Kuka, 35, who was in a relationship with Michael Curtis, was found guilty of manslaughter for failing to protect her child.

Nia's cousin Michael Pearson, 20, and Michael Curtis's partner Oriwa Kemp, 18, were found not guilty of manslaughter but were found guilty of child cruelty charges in the complex case.

New Zealand's Children's Commissioner Cindy Kiro told local media that there had been some consolation for the toddler's tragic death in the fact that justice had been served.

The court heard details of horrific abuse inflicted on the three-year old:

  • She had been kicked, beaten, slapped, jumped on and held over a burning fire
  • She had been put into a clothes dryer spinning at top heat
  • Wrestling moves copied from a computer game had been practised on her
  • She had been folded into a sofa and sat on, shoved into piles of rubbish, dragged through a sandpit half naked, flung against a wall and dropped from a height onto the floor
  • And she had been whirled rapidly on an outdoor rotary clothes line until she was thrown off.

At one point, she was left lying unconscious for 36 hours without medical attention.

A life sentence is too lenient...

I have an idea.

Let me have them. The victim's family will be at ease afterwards.

Edit: OH I'M SORRY. I said "parents" at first. I was unaware, until rereading to make sure the mother wasn't involved, (to make sure... gods what a world we live in where I have to reread a murder article to make sure the mom wasn't in on it) only to see that she was fucking one of the guys that killed her daughter. That's pretty awesome.

You know what, no. Give them to me so I can make me feel better.

Have at it, I won't stop you. That shit deserves death.

Oh yes, I edited my post.

Dexter was right, the scales must be balanced.

"Justice was served?" I don't think so. Not unless a crowd of big men with baseball bats goes at those motherfuckers Casino style. Things like this make me want to break something.

Oh and PS - that bitch needs to have her reproductive organs forcibly removed. With a rusty spoon. Where the hell was she when her daughter was being used as a trampoline? What is wrong with people?!

I know age shouldn't be an issue but a 35 year old woman and her 22 year old boyfriend? They need to make damn sure she can't have any more children. Hell, castrate him too.

both of those fuckers and her 'mother' deserve nothing better than torture and death. If I was a New Zealander I would be pissed that my tax dollars are going to waste feeding and clothing them. I say throw them in a cell and let them starve to death.

It was in New Zealand >.<

I know did that to piss off my NZ friend looking over my shoulder :P

he agrees with my idea btw >_>

I can't begin to explain in words what I feel like doing to people like that. So many emotions flood my mind and body.

We need licenses to own pets but ANYONE can have children.. little human beings that depends on us for everything !

This traggic, digusting act preformed by her caregivers... parents... "family"

I sometimes think bringing a child into this world (as cliché as it sounds) WOULD be cruel.

Hopefully NZ prison inmates have the same stance as American prison inmates when it comes to violent crimes against infants and young children. Shiv Justice for all.

This is just too cruel. How can they call themselves human beings after doing this to a little girl. Seriously, WTF???? No, quoting the greatest revenge movie of all time, "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Death is too good for them, they must suffer as I have suffered. They must see everything that they love torn from them as it was torn from me." Killing these idiots would only end their suffering. They must live the rest of their lives with the reminder of what they did. They should put up pictures of this little girl all over their cells so that they will never forget her face. They SHOULD be tortured and beaten, but not to death, for death is freedom from all responsibility.

Thats my two cents.

Neighbours who saw some of the abuse have told reporters they will live with the guilt of not having informed the authorities sooner.

Court officials said they had been shocked at how some witnesses found the level of violence in the home to be normal.

Prosecutor Fletcher Pilditch said investigators could find no obvious motive for the abuse other than bullying.

"She was bullied in the worst kind of way. She was singled out, for what reason we do not know," he said.

"Both family members and neighbours were aware of the neglect and abuse Nia was subject to," Children's Commissioner Ms Kiro said in a statement.

"That they didn't speak out in time is something they will have to live with."

At least they get to live.

At least they get to live.

Living with regret of this magnitude is worse than death. Then again, according to the article, this kind of stuff seems to be commonplace........

Well if neighbours and family witnessed some of this, then I think they should be charge with criminal negligence as well. And as far as "living with it", I doubt the murderers are the type of people who really care about what they did. They're probably just ticked off that they got sent to jail for it.

No, they can't really be charged with anything since they weren't involved, then again I'm no expert on NZ law so who knows *shrug*. As far as the murderers, being in jail for the rest of your life in a small cell makes you think, A LOT. They may care more about the fact that they got caught right now, but as time goes by, they will realize how bad their actions were and will beging to suffer with the memories and regret of having taken this innocent little girl's life.

Holy shit. I don't even know what to really say about this. My God. To even thing about what these people did, I just, I mean, to think someone went through something like that, at such a young age by her own parents! The people she is supposed to trust and love! It's sick, just completely sick. It also reminds me of the puppy that was brutally murdered in Australia I think. But this was a kid, a little girl. This is completely fucked up.

Let me tell you something... A person capable of kicking a three year old's head in after jumping on her tiny body and putting her in a dryer going full blast is not going to have an attack of conscience from sitting in a cell. Monsters like that are incapable of remorse or genuine regret because if they were capable of it, they wouldn't have done something so heinous in the first place. I'm sorry, but I don't believe the bullshit that every criminal can be rehabilitated. I think some people are pure, unmitigated evil and deserve every twisted horror that befalls them.
