Choco digging questions

Hey, I'm new to digging, and did a bit of it today. I have a few questions about it. How do you know when your digging skill raises? Are there areas that are best to dig in if you're just starting? Any information anyone can give me would be most appreciated. Thank you.^^

As your skill rises, you will have less time in between digs, and less time before you can dig after you zone. ffxi.somepage.com has the times for each level listed.
